Objectives: At the end of the week, you shall


have:
• determined the meanings of words using clues
(TPR, pictures, body movements, and etc);
• chosen the correct words using clues (TPR,
pictures, body movements, and etc); and
• valued the importance of TPR, pictures body
movements in vocabulary development

Learner’s Tasks

Lesson Overview

Listening and reading stories and poems are fun and


enjoyable. But sometimes, there are words that are
difficult to understand. To fully understand what we have
listened and read, we must analyze the meaning of words.
There is a need to unlock unfamiliar or challenging words
before reading or listening to a story or poem.
Giving the meaning of words can be done through
Total Physical Response (TPR), pictures presented or by the
body movements. These helps understand easily the word.
Let us take these examples.

Example 1
1. It is not good to fight with your friends.

By looking at this picture, we can say that fight


means hurting, punching, or shouting at one another.
Then, one can understand what the word fight means.

2. Mario is feeling sleepy.

The picture shows a boy yawning. Thus, one can
understand what sleepy means.

Example 2
Directions: Listen to a poem that will be read to you by
your family member/learning facilitator. Please take note
of the underlined words.

At the Zoo

First I saw the white bear, then I saw the black;


Then I saw the camel with a hump upon his back;
Then I saw the grey wolf, with mutton in his maw;
Then I saw the wombat waddle in the straw;
And I saw the elephant a-waving of his trunk;
Then I saw the monkeys-mercy, how unpleasantly
They smelt!

The underlined words that you see in the poem are


hump, mutton, and maw.
Are these words familiar to you? Do you easily
understand them?
Now, let us try to analyze the meaning of the words
from the poem through the following pictures.
