Water is a major challenge for the 21st century. Shortages, poor water quality and the lack of sanitation facilities have an impact on food security, health, gender equality and living conditions for disadvantaged people.
Despite an international situation that continues to be particularly uncertain, AFD Group’s activity in the water and sanitation sector reached an unprecedented level in 2023. With 1.8 billion euros committed, the sector accounted for 13% of AFD Group’s commitments. Proparco had notably a record level of activity with 274 million euros committed.
The financed projects are based on three pillars: reducing inequalities in access to drinking water and sanitation; taking action at local and regional levels to increase climate and ecological resilience; and improving governance for effective and sustainable services.
These results for the year 2023 are presented on the basis of their contribution to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). They demonstrate the transversal nature of this sector, which can help meet a number of the SDG targets, well beyond SDG 6 dedicated to the water and sanitation sector.
