Koh-Lanta: Le Totem Maudit is the twenty-eighth season of Koh-Lanta. It was broadcast on TF1 from February 22 to June 21, 2022.

Le Totem Maudit is notable for featuring the very first Final Three in the history of Koh-Lanta, as well as being the third season to feature a tie at the Final Tribal Council, with more than one winner being declared.

Bastien San Pedro tied with François Descamp and defeated Géraldine Nicolle in a 4-4-3 jury vote at the Final Tribal Council. As a result, both Bastien and François were declared Dual Survivors.

Twists/Changes

• Expanded Cast: The adventure starts with 24 castaways. This only happened once before, in Les 4 Terres.
• Three Tribes: For only the third time in Koh-Lanta history, the game starts with three tribes, each composed of four men and four women.
• Tribe Captains: At the marooning, the castaways immediately compete in an individual Reward Challenge where both the first-placing man and the first-placing woman become the captains of two of the new tribes. Additionally, they must pick another castaway who will become the captain of the third tribe. The tribes are then selected in a Schoolyard Pick.
• Cursed Totem: This is the main twist of the season: in every episode, a tribe or a castaway that comes in last in a challenge receives the Cursed Totem that can come with several disadvantages:
  • Cursed Bracelets: The man and the woman who come in last in the opening Reward Challenge both receive a Cursed Bracelet, which means that every time they go to Tribal Council until the first post-merge Tribal Council, they will receive an extra penalty vote against them. If they are eliminated before then, they must give their Cursed Bracelet to another castaway from their tribe. A third Cursed Bracelet with the same rules is introduced on Day 7 where it is given to the castaway who comes in last in the individual Reward Challenge. Penalty votes do not extend through a revote.
  • Impromptu Tribal Council: The tribe that places last in the first Immunity Challenge has its Tribal Council held immediately after the challenge, at the challenge site.
  • Tribe Swap: The tribe that wins the first tribal Reward Challenge must pick a castaway from the last-placing tribe to join them, and they must also pick one of their own members to join that tribe in return. Both castaways switching tribes are given individual immunity at the following Tribal Council should their new tribe lose the corresponding Immunity Challenge.
  • Exile: The tribe that wins the Day 10 Reward Challenge must pick two castaways from the losing tribe who will be exiled to an isolated beach for 24 hours. Once there, these two castaways are tasked with finding two hidden talismans before sundown. If they fail to do so, their tribe will have a disadvantage in the next Immunity Challenge. On Day 16, the tribe that loses the Reward Challenge is sent to live until the next Reward Challenge on the former Turung camp that has been abandoned since the switch.
  • Challenge Disadvantage: The tribe that loses the Day 13 Reward Challenge has a 20-second time penalty in the next Immunity Challenge. On Day 18, the tribe that wins the Reward Challenge is allowed to practice for the next Immunity Challenge, giving a disadvantage to the losing tribe.
  • Ambassadors Disadvantage: The ambassador of the tribe that loses the last Reward Challenge before the merge has a higher probability (2 in 3 chance) of being eliminated in the rock draw, should the ambassadors not agree on a castaway to eliminate.
  • Penalty Vote after Challenge:
    • At the Day 24 Reward Challenge, the two castaways who come in last both receive an extra vote against them at the following Tribal Council.
    • At the Day 30 Immunity Challenge, both members of the pair that comes in last receive an extra vote against them at Tribal Council.
    • At the Day 36 Immunity Challenge, the castaway who comes in last receives an extra vote against them at Tribal Council.
  • Reward Sit-Out: The Day 27 Reward Challenge is competed by two teams of five formed in a Schoolyard Pick, leaving one odd castaway out who is sent back to camp without a chance to earn reward.
  • Sudden Death Challenge: The castaway who comes in last in the Day 32 Reward Challenge and two other castaways chosen by the winners of the challenge take part in another challenge the day after, where the castaway finishing last is directly eliminated from the game.
  • Cursed Perch: At the final five orienteering race, four people are qualified for the Final Immunity Challenge (Perch) instead of the usual three, but the castaway who comes in fourth in the race has to stand on a "cursed" perch, giving them a disadvantage in the challenge.
• Double Tribal Council: At the first Immunity Challenge, only the tribe placing first wins immunity, sending both losing tribes to Tribal Council to vote out one person each.
• Immunity Necklaces: Equivalent of Hidden Immunity Idols in Koh-Lanta. The ones hidden at the pre-merge tribes' camps are only valuable until the first post-merge Tribal Council, while the ones hidden on the merged tribe's camp have full validity. A clue to the location of an additional Immunity Necklace that is only valuable at the following Tribal Council is available as one of the two strategic items found in the chest opened by the winners of the second sudden death challenge.
• Tribe Switch: On Day 7, the three original tribes are dissolved. An individual Reward Challenge is held where the first and second-place finishers become the captains of the two new tribes, Cadlao and Matingi, formed in a Schoolyard Pick.
• Ambassadors: At the merge, both tribes must appoint a castaway from the opposite tribe to attend the ambassadors meeting, where their purpose is to directly eliminate a castaway from the game. If the two ambassadors do not agree on a name, one of them is eliminated by a rock draw.
• Sudden Death Challenge: The castaway who comes in last in the second individual Immunity Challenge is directly eliminated from the game. This challenge is unrelated to the Cursed Totem.
• Tied Destinies: On Day 29, the ten remaining castaways are divided into five pairs by a rock draw. Until the next Tribal Council, the fate of each contestant is linked to their partner: the challenges are competed by pairs, and the person voted out at Tribal Council causes their partner's demise.
• Immunity Amulet: The castaway finishing first in the Day 32 Reward Challenge also receives an amulet giving them immunity at the following Tribal Council.
• Extra Vote: After the second sudden death challenge, the two challenge winners are tasked with taking seven items from a chest containing several food items, every remaining castaway's letters from home, and two strategic advantages, one of which is an Extra Vote that is only usable at the following Tribal Council.
• Final Three: For the very first time in Koh-Lanta history, this season featured a Final Tribal Council with three remaining finalists facing the jury instead of the usual Final Two. To get this innovative setup, this time, the winner of the Final Immunity Challenge (Perch) chose his first opponent for the Final Tribal Council. Then, the latter picked the third finalist among the two others.
