Koh-Lanta: La Guerre des Chefs is the twenty-third season of Koh-Lanta. It was broadcast on TF1 from March 15 to June 21, 2019.

It is the first season to air after the cancellation of the series in May 2018 due to a sexual harassment scandal.

Maud Bamps defeated Cindy Poumeyrol in a 7-6 jury vote to become the Sole Survivor.

Twists

• War of the Chiefs: for once, this season will start with the famous "Poles Challenge" (a classic in Koh-Lanta). The three castaways who will remain the longest on their pole will get to spend the night together and decide how the tribes will be divided. Each of them will then become the "Chief" of a tribe. They will be able to attend the other tribes' Tribal Councils, until the merge. Each chief has an important role during the Challenges. They have to lead their tribe to victory, and accept the defeat for their tribe. At each Reward Challenge, the chief of the winning tribe must make a choice between two rewards. The one which they have not picked then goes to the tribe which arrived in second place.
• Chief Immunity Bracelet: Each chief starts the game with a Chief Immunity Bracelet which functions just like a Hidden Immunity Idol and once they play out their bracelet, they lose their special status. Their tribes need to agree unanimously on the name of a new chief who will then receive a new bracelet. If a tribe fails to agree, the chiefs of the other two tribe need to decide for them.
• Three Tribes: For the second time in Koh-Lanta history, the game starts with three tribes instead of the usual two. A blue tribe, Ikalu​, is added in the mix with the traditional red and yellow tribes, Kama​​​​ and Tabuo​.
• Ambassadors: At the merge, all tribe chiefs become the ambassadors to a special meeting. Their purpose is to directly eliminate a castaway from the game, and if the three ambassadors do not agree on a name, one of the three is eliminated by a rock draw.
• Replacements: Due to two evacuations, two castaways returned into the game after being voted out.
• Black Vote: The black vote keeps the mechanics introduced in Cambodge: starting from the first post-merge Tribal Council, the person voted out gives to a remaining castaway the power to vote twice at the following Tribal Council.
• Tied Destinies: On Day 23, the twelve people remaining are divided into six pairs by a rock draw. Until the next Tribal Council, the fate of each contestant is linked to their partner: the challenges are competed by pairs, and the person voted out at Tribal Council causes their partner's demise.
• Elimination Challenge: On Day 33, all remaining castaways, take part in a special challenge where the person finishing last is directly eliminated from the game.
• Final Five: The last five adventurers will go to the orienteering race.

Chiefs History

The three castaways who stood the longest on their pole during the opening "Poles Challenge" earned the right to become Tribe Chief. More than just the chiefs composed the tribes on Day 2 and have important roles to play in every challenges : they have to lead their tribe to victory, and accept the defeat for their tribe. For example, at each Reward Challenge, the chief of the winning tribe must make a choice between two rewards. The one which they have not picked then goes to the tribe which arrived in second place.

The chiefs start the game with an Immunity Bracelet (which works just like a regular Hidden Immunity Idol) and also have the opportunity to attend the other tribes' Tribal Councils, until the merge. Thus, they gain important insight on the dynamics of their rival tribes.

A chief can be dethroned by being voted out or by playing their Chief Immunity Bracelet. The following day, the remaining tribe members need to choose a new chief unanimously. If they cannot come to a unanimous agreement, then, the chiefs from the opposite two tribes must decide for them. Once a new chief is chosen, they receive their own Chief Immunity Bracelet.

Trivia

• This is the first time in Koh-Lanta history that 21 contestants all start their adventure at the same time (in previous seasons with 21 contestants, they started with only 18 or 20 of them and the other(s) came in the game after day one).
• This is only the second time that both finalists were female castaways, fifteen years after Delphine Bano and Isabelle Seguin from Bocas del Toro.
  • As both women were tied and considered Sole Survivors, Maud is the first female castaway to beat another female at the Final Tribal Council.
