Roberto

Roberto Frois (ロベルト・フロイス Roberuto Furoisu) is a Christian missionary born to a Japanese mother and Spanish father. After being betrayed by his adoptive and demonically possessed father, Luis Frois (who tried to use him as a genma experiment), as well as losing many close friends, Roberto is now on a mission of pure revenge.

Roberto's weapon of choice are his enhanced arms and fists, capable of numerous destructive boxing combinations. Roberto's gauntlets are based on the Christian archangel's, Raphael, Uriel and Michael, ordered from weakest gauntlet to strongest respectively. His alternate costume is William F. Guile from the Street Fighter series.

Story

Early Life

Roberto was a mixed race child, born from a Spanish father and Japanese mother, though his father died shortly after his birth. Roberto lived in spain for a short time before he and his mother relocated to Japan, living within a small village in Kyushu. Due to his hair and skin colour, Roberto and his mother suffered significant anti-semetic abuse, causing him to become highly distrustful of Japanese individuals and refusing to speak Japanese despite becoming fluent. However, during Hideyoshi Toyotomi's invasion of Kyushu in 1586, Roberto's village was burned down by Toyotomi's forces, leading to the death of most if it's inhabitants, including Roberto's mother. While it isn't entirely certain, it is likely that Hideyasu Yuki was an unwilling participant in this attack. After escaping the destruction of his village, Roberto was forced to fend for himself an unknown amount of time, but was soon found by a Portugeuse Christian missionary named Luis Frois, who took Roberto in and began to care for him like a son alongside 26 other orphans. It's around this time that Luis begun conducting research on the Genma at Hideyoshi's orders, basing himself within the Toyokuni Research Facilities in Sakai and Shimabara, and Roberto would begin to view the facilities like home, often taking frequent trips with Luis between the facilities and Sawayama Castle.

However, in 1588, Hideyoshi issued a country-wide prohibition on Christianity, driving all Christians from the country with the exception of Luis, as he had already been possessed by the Genma Scientist Rosencrantz, causing a personality shift that Roberto noticed. One by one, the now possessed Luis would begin experimenting on his adoptive children, and 26 of them would lose their lives as a result of these experiments. These deaths would be publically framed as necessary due to them violating the ban on Christianity. However, when Roberto was set to share this fate, he found himself waking up outside of the facility, wearing a pendant that acted as a key to the facility as well as possessing a holy power capable of killing Genma. He soon discovered that Luis had managed to surgically inplant the Exorcising Beads within Roberto's body, not only allowing him to kill Genma with his bare hands, but also to damage and destroy the Dark Stones housed within both of the Research Facilities. Unfortunately, at some point after he escaped, Roberto was found and captured by Rosencrantz, the Genma desperately wanting to discover the source of Roberto's power, not knowing what Luis had done.

Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams

Roberto is first introduced when Soki and Tenkai meet him in a prison cell within the dungeons of Sawayama Castle. The two offer to help him, but Roberto replies in Spanish and breaks his restraints himself, attacking Soki when he tries to form an allience. Following their battle, Roberto escapes to find Luis Frois while the other two are confronted by Sakon Shima, though inadvertently leaves his pendant behind. Later, he reappears when Soki confronts Mitsunari Ishida and Luis Frois and tries to kill Luis. However, both he and Soki fall through a trap door set by Mitsunari and are left to fight off a corpse of Hecuba while Mitsunari and Luis retreat to Kyoto. Afterward, Tenkai convinces Roberto to join the group using the Spanish tongue, though Roberto remains unwilling to talk to the rest of the party. Roberto joins them as they attempt to assualt the Diago Blossoming Festival in Kyoto, but quickly flies into a rage upon seeing Luis, chasing him down and separating from the group.

After the failed assualt on Kyoto, Roberto is captured by Luis and taken to the San Espana Hospital in Osaka, and he is subject to gruesome experiments in order to find the source of his power. Roberto's location is later discovered by Minokichi some time after the party arrive at Mt. Hiei, though they fear that Luis Frois is involved and leave to retrieve him. They manage to arrive and confront Luis not long before Roberto would succumb to his experiments, and the Oni defeat the Scientist and free Roberto. This, however, triggers a trap that leaves them surrounded by Genma, but Luis suddenly finds himself able to temporarily regain control of his body from Rosencrantz and begs Soki to take Roberto away before he loses control again. Upon returning to Mt. Hiei with an unconsciouss Roberto, the severity of his wounds is discovered, with Arin marvelling at the fact that he's still alive after what he endured. After some time passes with Ohatsu constantly watching over him, Roberto finally regains conscioussness and realises that they had saved his life. Realising that their kindness is genuine, Roberto finally decides to begin speaking to them in Japanese, agreeing to help them defeat the Genma and Hideyoshi. At this point, he begins taking notice of Ohatsu, feeling a significant attraction to her as she watched over him.

Two months after being saved from Luis, Roberto makes a full recovery and decides to return to Sawayama Castle in order to retrieve his pendant, though while he insists that the others don't need to get involved, their insistance not to let him go alone causes him to relent and accept their aid. Using a secret entrance to enter the castle, the group are able to reach the dungeons and find Roberto's pendant in his old cell, defeating the Guardiun Genma as they escape the town. Upon returning to Mt. Hiei, Roberto reveals that his pendant also acts as a key to the Toyokuni Research Facility, as well as the fact that the facility was built to conduct Genma research. The Oni agree to infiltrate the facility, and once inside, Roberto manages to access the central computer. While the others are unable to read anything on it due to it being written in Spanish, Roberto does so and discovers the Genma's ultimate plan to revive the Genma God of Light, as well as the true purpose of the Dark Stones. He promises to tell the others once they destroy the Dark Stone currently housed in the Sakai Facility, and they succeed in finding it housed in an underground chamber.

Before anyone is able to damage it, they are confronted by Mitsunari, who realises that they could have only found this facility due to Roberto, and he watches as Roberto begins punching the Dark Stone, revealing that destroying it is the true purpose of the Exorcising Beads. Realising the threat that Roberto poses, Mitsunari atempts to kill him, only for Soki to defend the westerner, and Mitsunari is forced to attempt to fight through the Oni. Upon his defeat, Roberto is successful in destroying the Dark Stone, and Mitsunari reveals to them that the Genma had manipulated events for the past 10 years in order to revive the God of Light, fleeing before they can try and stop him. Once the group return to Mt. Hiei, Roberto reveals everything that he had learned, including the existence of Claudius, Rosencrantz and Ophelia, the plan to revive the God of Light, and Hideyoshi's role as the God's vessel once the Omen Star descends upon the Earth. It is also learned that Claudius had been inhabiting Mitsunari's body, though Roberto suspects that while Mitsunari initially consented to this, Claudius will eventually take over control entirely and dispose of Mitsunari in the end. He reveals that the second Dark Stone is housed in the Shimabara facility, and when they question how to reach it in time, he reminds them of the San Felipe in Sakai that was not destroyed alongside many other western ships.

Upon finding it, Roberto helps the others prepare it to set sail while Soki holds off Sakon, helping Soki climb onto the ship alongside Ohatsu after Sakno's defeat. He prepares to help stop Sakon from destroying the ship, but is left to watch as Tenkai is revealled to still be alive as he helps Soki purify Sakon, destroying the mask that controlled him. Once the Oni reach Beppu Bay in Kyushu, he fights with them against Lady Yodo, attempting to convince Ohatsu that she is an imposter before she is forced to reveal herself as Ophelia, though she is defeated. They eventually reach Shimabara and prepare to assualt the facility, but Roberto has a conversation with Ohatsu the night before the attack. He finds himself laughing as Ohatsu gets flustered by his assertion that she is invloved with Soki, but inwardly knows that she won't understand his own feelings after she leaves to rest. The group reach the facility the next day and infiltrate it, reaching the underground chamber only to find the Dark Stone missing. Luis Frois, still now re-possessed by Rosencrantz, appears as they arrive, driving Roberto to anger, but Mitsunari also appears and shows them that the Dark Stone is actually floating far above them out of reach before attempting to fight them off as the platform begins to rise.

While the Oni manage to defeat him again, he tells them that so long as the Dark Stone remains intact, he remains invincible, so Roberto attempts to rush in and destroy it. However, Mitsunari is able to use Genma magic to bind not only Roberto, but the entire group as well, only for a now freed Sakon to appear and pierce Mitsunari, forcing Claudius to relinquish his possession of Mitsunari's body as well as release his grip on the Oni. With the Omen Star having already begun it's approach, it's dark essence allowed Claudius to manifest on his own and he reveals his true form to the group, attempting to defeat them once again. Once Sakon flees with Mitsunari, Roberto begins his assualt on the Dark Stone while the others fight Claudius. Upon his defeat, the second Dark Stone is destroyed, but Claudius warns that while they have succeeded here, they only have a week before the Star finishes it's approach, leaving them not enough time to return to Kyoto and defeat Hideyoshi. As Claudius laughs, his body falls from the raised platform and explodes upon landing back into the underground chamber, with both Rosencrantz and Luis being caught in the blast and dying as a result, though Luis regains control once again in his last moments and praises Roberto's actions.

Once the group escape the facility, Sakon approaches them and tells of the Space Folder housed within Nagoya Castle by Nobunaga, allowing instant travel to Kyoto. Roberto asserts that they could reach Nagoya Castle in 4 days, and the group begin their journey, thoug Sakon suspects that assualting the castle with only 5 people will not be enough. The group manage to reach Nagoya Castle in 6 days and infiltrate it, only to discover Munenori Yagyu waiting for them, who Akane Yagyu insists on fighting alone. Upoin revealling the truth about Munenori's Demon Eye, she is able to defeat him, but they soon discover that Munenori had been consuming Genma Insects, chasing him to the top of the Castle as he flees to the Space Folder. They find Ophelia waiting for him as she turns on the device and taunts their failiure as she and Munenori are transported to Kyoto and destroy the device on the other side to prevent them from using it as well. Left with no other options, Minokichi decides to use a power that he was given by the late Mitsuhide Akechi at the Akechi Tomb, using it to transport them all there at the cost of his life.

Once they arrive and grieve the loss of Minokichi, the group begin their final assualt on Kyoto, and they discover that Rosencrantz had been revived by the Omen Star's dark essence. Roberto is able to hold him off and splits from the rest of the group in order to defeat Rosencrantz himself, encouraging the rest to rush ahead and stop the Omen Star's descent. Roberto ultimately defeats Rosencrantz, avenging the possession and death of Luis, and rushes towards Fushimi Castle alongside the others to help Soki burn the Genma Mother Tree and save Cha-Cha after the discovery of the Genma Seed that facilitates the rebirth of the God of Light. Following the sucessful purification of the Genma Mother Tree, Roberto is among those present to witness Hideyoshi's death, though he joins the rest of the group as they rush outside to find that a somehow surviving Munenori had taken the seed without noticing, and watches and Munenori successfully begins the reincarnation of Fortinbras, transforming into the God's serpent form.

When Tenkai gives Soki his Gauntlet in an attempt to turn him into the Oni God of Darkness, Roberto is among those to give his power to him to trigger the transformation, watching as Soki successfully defeats the Serpent Fortinbras. However, due to Munenori successfully using the seed, the real Fortinbras begins to descend from the Omen Star and incapacitates the group, Roberto believing that Fortinbras' true power is far beyond them. He watches as Soki defies the God regardless, and they all fight alongside him against Fortinbras, eventually resulting in Soki managing to use Requiem to purify the God and destroy him entirely, though this renders him and the rest of the group unconsciouss for a while. He eventually wakes up to find that Soki, his full godly power having been awakened, had sacrificed himself in order to destroy the Omen Star, and he escapes Kyoto with everyone else.

Following the final defeat of Fortinbras, Roberto remains in Japan until Ohatsu's marraige to Takatsugu Kyōgoku. After the wedding, Roberto decides to use the San Felipe to return to Spain in order to ensure that the Genma could not be used there again, resolving to fight even the Spanish King himself if necessary.
