“It always fits… eventually.” ⭐️
Best Scene: Leap of Faith
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is one I’ve seen numerous times, only for it to finally click now. This story is told so gracefully while combining many of the greatest aspects of Spider-Man. It has the childlike spark of Spider-Man (2002), the raw emotions of Spider-Man 2, and the scope of Spider-Man: No Way Home. All the different tones pull together to create an experience that’s paced like lightning and endlessly entertaining.
Miles Morales is a fantastic protagonist. He is good natured and charming, though in this adventure with all the Spider-People, he is completely out of his element. The interlocking of the super-collider conflict combined with his inner struggle to find the strength to be a hero is executed perfectly. The whole film questions whether he has what it takes to be Spider-Man and by the third act, it gets answered beautifully. Not only does he have the most epic web-slinging scene of all-time, but the closure with his father is something profound too.
Peter B. Parker and Gwen Stacy are wonderful alongside Miles. The characters have a sharp wit and humor that feels naturally hilarious, while also having a sadness that they carry with them. While they work with Miles to go home to their universes, they find a friend and a shot at redemption. It’s truly great stuff and I can’t wait to see how it’s further built upon in the sequel.
Where many people tend to criticize this film is in the villains and I don’t particularly understand that. Kingpin is a very intimidating and well-drawn character. Showing his need for family only for his family to fear him is tragic. It’s a bit one-note compared to Doctor Octopus or Green Goblin, though I find it works for this movie. However, The Prowler is a villain that truly epitomizes how intelligent the script is. Making Uncle Aaron The Prowler only added to the complexity of the characters and it surely was surprising.
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is complex with its characters and simple in its storytelling, creating a masterful blend. With some of the most gorgeous animation and one of the coolest soundtracks, this film absolutely kicks butt. This is truly an instant classic.
