Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse is a fantastic movie. Before Across the Spiderverse releases this weekend, allowing us to finally see whether or not the highly anticipated sequel will live up to the heights of this animated hit, I wanted to take a step-back in time to this ridiculously impressive film. One of the key sentiments I remember floating around the air upon this film’s winter 2018 release was how genuinely unexpected it’s quality and popularity seemed to be- heck, I wouldn’t have even seen it in theaters if my afternoon on Christmas Day wasn’t free. With this film audiences were re-introduced to a fresh style of creative animation, an incredibly relatable protagonist, the exciting idea of a multiverse, and most of all emotional superhero storytelling all of which in a way helped revolutionized the way we look at certain superhero stories. All these years later continuing to strive in superhero-fandoms, being universally accessible to all ages (which helped it become an academy award winner), and solidifying its place as one of if not the the most stylistically influential films of the modern wave of animation I don’t think anyone can seriously make a case against the impressiveness of this film. On top of making such an impact, it’s vital to remember why it made such an impact in the first place- this is an amazing film.

From a standpoint of drawing in the thematic resonance I believe this film excels at quite literally all it’s going for. Showcasing the progression of growing up via a brilliant reluctant hero character arc with Miles Morales, the emotions on display in this film are pretty much impeccable. The mix of hilarious, balanced humor makes the roller coaster of emotions all the more engrossing. I’ll never get over how perfect the entire voice cast, especially Shameik Moore as Miles. There’s really not too much more I feel as if I can add to the conversation surrounding this film, it’s my third time watching this in it’s entirety but with all honestly I’ve felt as if my opinions on it have been fleshed out since the night I first saw it. Sometimes you can tell truly great films are truly great without any dissection or thought. In Oscar retrospect, I’m still overjoyed at how this film swept the Best Animated Feature categories across the field without any genre bias or struggle. If it was a year of ten or if voters could have seen into the future where this film is so highly regarded, I can’t help but wonder if this film could have cracked a Best Picture nomination. Despite having an early release date and being a sequel, I’m once again brought to wonder if Across the Spiderverse could be a Best Picture contender by next year- we all know it’ll get plenty good enough reviews. Overall Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse is a mesmerizing feat of animation that’ll never cease to be completely entertaining and exciting for all those watching, this is a bonafide modern day classic if there ever was one.
