Into the Spiderverse really is something special. As amazing as Across the Spiderverse is, this takes the crown as the best Spider-Man film and one of the greatest comic book and animated films of all time. Obviously this film revolutionised animation with its impeccable art style and I’ll never get over how freaking gorgeous this movie looks. It truly feels like they took a comic book and animated every page of it, creating a movie so vibrant, so colourful and unlike anything seen before. There’s so many amazing details in the animation. There’s a billboard for example that is a reference to Shaun of the Dead and even better, Flint’s invention in Cloudy of a Chance of Meatballs can be seen in the final battle, the first film Lord and Miller directed! This brilliant animation leads to some truly outstanding action sequences that are so fast paced and easy to follow, sequences a live action movie could never create. The humour also uses the animation to its advantage, I forgot how hilarious this film was. I laughed out loud in so many scenes, especially the scenes with Miles struggling with his new Spider powers. The soundtrack and score in this movie are incredible. The leap of faith sequence wouldn’t be as iconic as it is without the brilliant usage of ‘What’s Up Danger’ and the score carries a lot of this movie’s strong emotional moments, particularly in the final battle as Miles and Peter B Parker part ways.

The movie’s not just perfect from a technical standpoint though, the writing for this movie is sublime. Miles is a terrific protagonist in every way with his struggles in school and his acceptance in being Spider-Man. His character arc and growth throughout the film is super compelling and satisfying. The use of the multiverse in this movie is so creative as well as the use of different Spider-Men. It’s a premise that at this point has never been seen before in a superhero film. Despite it being super fun having 6 different Spider-Men, they also add a lot to their film and Miles’s character arc as they aid him and help him become Spider-Man. They’re the only ones who truly understand him and it makes the friendships formed all the more meaningful. Peter B Parker’s character arc was another outstanding one as a mentor to Miles and being ready to rectify for his mistakes. Gwen’s struggle with forgetting her past were also quite compelling (I can’t lie though, she’s a lot more interesting in the second movie). The twist of Uncle Aaron being the Prowler was a well set up shocker and made for a heartbreaking death scene and a crucial part of Miles’s arc. Kingpin’s a threatening but also compelling villain and his design has grown on me during this viewing, Liv is a fun villain, the design for Norman was sick, Aunt May is badass, just the entre cast of characters is brilliant.

Everything about Into the Spiderverse is brilliant: the humour, action, story, animation, creativity, character designs, emotional moments, character development, it’s unreal what Sony and Marvel managed to do here. The craziest part was this had a $90 million budget. It really is a miracle and magical film, one I’ll always cherish and admire and adore so much. And finally, fuck the academy for not nominating this for best Picture.
