Excuse me what the fuck did I just watch. This exceeded my expectations in every way possible, and despite not having seen the first three, it's clear Fury Road stands on its own as a separate, undisputed masterpiece. Five stars may be a bit impulsive, but I can't think of any reasons to rate it any lower.
From the word go, we're thrown into a world of action, thrills, electrifying colours and general post-apocalyptic goodness. This is maintained throughout the runtime, which passes in a flash. At no point does it ever feel boring, slow or wasted - the pacing is perfect.
The performances are exceptional. Charlize Theron! She gives probably the best performance of the film. She is the ultimate badass heroine - strong, no-nonsense, and driven. But in her eyes, Theron displays a multitude of layers and a clearly eventful past behind her. And god bless Tom Hardy! He can do no wrong, and I absolutely love him in this. The final glance the pair share is going to be added to my mental list of final glances in films which break me for no reason (see also la la land, the dark knight rises). And Nicholas Hoult, too? He was great. I didn't realise he was in this before I watched it and I was like "haha this crusty pale guy looks kinda like Nicholas Hoult" lmao.
Now onto the action sequences. Take me to Valhalla bitch. They are some of the most chaotic, sumptuous, operatic, arresting and flamboyant sequences I have ever seen in my entire life. This! This is why action is a superior genre! Shout out to guitar guy, too. His dedication to music while everyone else is fighting like the fate of the world depends on it has to be commended.
Anyway I'm sorry to ramble. I'm just floored by the sheer grandeur of it all. Psychedelic, punky, raucous, confident, elemental and dystopian. I'm really pulling out all the adjectives here to try and describe this magnificent achievement in filmmaking. Bravo.
