Oppenheimer

Oppenheimer

Barbenheimer was legend- wait for it…

This film is an instant masterpiece out of Christopher Nolan and one of the most well-made pieces of art I have ever seen. There is no one in history better at telling the story of a tortured genius with complex timelines than Nolan. Oppenheimer is a mix of JFK, The Social Network, and The Imitation Game to the absolute highest peak possible for a three-hour biopic. The weaving storylines are written wonderfully with incredible dialogue and character dynamics. The editing and sound design should be absolute locks for Oscar wins and the cinematography is beautiful. The film swapping between black & white and color is also gorgeous. The classic Nolan stereotype of weaker woman characters is present but this dense spectacle is a privilege to all movie fans.

The cast is one of the deepest of all time and I’m expecting at least three Oscar nominations. Cillian Murphy is INCREDIBLE in this film. His disheveled appearance and emotional expressions are perfect for the role. Along with him, Robert Downey Jr. is beyond impressive. RDJ re-announces to the world that he is one of the best actors in Hollywood and it’s great to see him out from the shadow of Iron Man. Matt Damon’s return from his acting break for Nolan is great too as he’s one of my favorites. Emily Blunt and Florence Pugh are given much less to do in this film than their counterparts but still kill it.

The rest of the supporting cast seemingly never ends: Benny Safdie, Josh Hartnett, Rami Malek, Kenneth Branagh, Dylan Arnold, Dane DeHaan, Alden Ehrenreich, Matthew Modine, Gary Oldman, Alex Wolff, Casey Affleck, Jack Quaid, Josh Peck, David Dastmalchian, Jason Clarke, Devon Bostick, Tim DeKay… IT DOESN’T STOP. All of the recognizable faces make this long journey so much more fun.

The first act of getting the team together is full of awesome characters and I’ll definitely need to watch it over to understand all of the timelines better. The sex scenes are definitely surprising for Nolan but are still executed with brilliant filmmaking. The build up of the city and bomb are thrilling and the test is wildly suspenseful… I absolutely love the choices Nolan makes for the explosion and it is breathtaking to watch. The ensuing town rally at the basketball court is horrifying and I’m sure my heart rate was through the roof. The third act will definitely be less interesting for some but the courtroom drama feel is very still intriguing to me as we wait to find out the future of these men. The final talks with Einstein are chilling and I left the theater absolutely speechless… I cannot wait to watch this again.
