Oppenheimer

Oppenheimer

91/100.                            2023 Ranked
                                         Nolan Ranked

Hauntingly brilliant. Maybe the best film I’ve ever seen on release definitely the best of the year.

The ending scene where Oppenheimer delivers one of the most chilling lines of dialogue and we get Cillian Murphys face looking at us as the music goes hard and it dawns on us how it only takes one ego and the world can end.

The way Oppenheimers mental state is shown in the speech scene after the bomb was deployed is absolutely incredible and horrifying in the best way and I think extremely important to be shown.

this could be one of the most well acted films I’ve ever seen in my life, even the small roles with two lines had well known actors come to impress in.

Cillian Murphy has to win the best actor Oscar. There’s no other alternative, it doesn’t matter who else’s does what else this year it’s his, the film was made for him to carry and carry he does it perfectly. He used the best parts of his past roles and produced a historic performance.

And I’ve got to say I think Robert Downey Jr might deserve an Oscar as well, this is the best he’s ever been giving us a sneaky villainous performance that’s enhanced greatly by Nolan’s choice to have the scenes from his view in black and white.

Emily Blunt is excellent as Kitty Oppenheimer and there’s a scene near the end where she could be earning herself award recognition as well, she’s been overlooked before but it should be hard to now.

Florence Pugh may have been naked for half her line but she came in and impressed once again and remains one of the best about.

Other supporting cast who were excellent were of course Matt Damon in a role he seems wel suited to at this point in his career, Benny Safdie who I’m glad has another chance to shine, Remi Malek, Toni Conti and Gary Oldman also came in to steal a scene each for fun.

Hoyte Van Hoytema maintains his reputation for being one of the best cinematographers going delivering a visual masterclass.

Christopher Nolan’s use of sound in this is just ridiculously good, his choice of when to cut the audio to let us focus on the visuals and then plunge us back in with the loud sounds of reality is too good.

Overall it’s everything I thought it would be, the best film of the year and one of the most interesting films I’ve seen ever.
