June Squibb now tied with Tom Cruise as my favorite action star.
OH MY GOD WHAT A DELIGHT!!! Can’t think of the last time I had a smile on my face the entire runtime of a movie. A treasure! The way Margolin shoots scenes of Thelma doing things that are difficult for old people (walking on gravely dirt, going up stairs, moving through a crowded antique shop) like tense action scenes… THRILLING. And the M:I-style score is perfection. It’s also…

Score as punchline, score as endurance test, score as stimulant overuse, score as the dynamic between Steve Harvey rolling his eyes at the contestants and the board nevertheless revealing that they are correct about the human condition, score as edging (sorry), score as tennis score, score as Godard score, score as the neurosis that blurs interpersonal conflict and game, score as the music athletes hear in their head, score as narrator/referee, score as rave, score as punchline.
Love a director…

Fuck it 5 stars. Watching with Manny’s roommate’s surround sound + subwoofer setup was simply incredible. It might not be a perfect movie but it excels so profoundly at the things it’s good at that I think it counts as a masterpiece. Finding out the score is original music by director Tom Tykwer and the vocals are by Lola actress Franka Potente…. I don’t know what to say

Group of us that have been playing tennis lately went to see this together and played tennis at laurelhurst park beforehand but both courts were taken so we played in this large concrete circle thing next to the playground. Had to invent our own games. Making it work with an odd number of people… playing tennis…
I wore my uniform polo from the bike valet that I cut the sleeves off. Many of us were in tennis attire

Devastating and astonishing use of sound.
Felt like my stomach was inside out by the end. Afterwards in Sophie’s apartment I went to the sink and filled a glass with water and felt towards myself the kind of silent nauseous dissonance you feel watching these characters go about such ordinary tasks. Its been impossible not to feel this lately. There is no catharsis but there is at least something that feels right in the fact that such an articulate representation…

A very memorable sonic moment happens in Kiki’s delivery service when Tombo falls from the rope dangling from the blimp and Kiki flies down to catch him and the music and sound effects all go silent. There’s a prolonged moment when a Disney movie would have had an orchestral swell but the film just leaves you in the breathless absence of sound and it makes the moment transcendent. So much of this movie feels like an expansion of that holy…

I just kept thinking “I can’t believe they let him cook like this”

Probably gonna give this movie 5 stars next time I watch it

This is one of the main movies I’ve refrained from watching until I can see it on a big screen and finally Clinton St played it! After seeing Young Girls of Rochefort there yesterday this may be my first back to back 5 star moviegoing experience
The shot alone of her ascending the grassy staircase warrants 5 stars
When they first said her name Victoria Page I was shook bc it was so familiar then I realized it’s Devyn’s letterboxd…

Some immediate thoughts:
I have been sleeping on Dance and the fact that film is a great medium to portray dance and I want to watch more movies with people dancing now
That cafe is so sick & the progress of the stage construction in the background is so cool and more movies should have background things that you just see developing over the passage of time
Teared up during Gene Kelly’s first number just bc it…
