—Tuba to Grace, "The Debutante Ball Car" |
Tuba was the gorilla companion to Hazel, Grace, and Simon throughout the first five episodes of Book 3. She aided them on their journey, albeit begrudgingly.
Appearance[]
Tuba is a large, purple gorilla with a tuba on each shoulder, hence her name. She also wears a brown satchel for storing items, such as a musical rock. In "The Debutante Ball Car", she wears a sky blue sun hat with flowers in it and a matching shawl with a magenta floral pattern on the trim.
Personality[]
Tuba is shown to be friendly to others and protective of her friends, but can be aggressive if need be. She is mostly quiet, which Hazel notes as her being shy. Tuba cares very much about Hazel, presumably because she reminds Tuba of her late daughter Bugle.
History[]
Early Life[]
Tuba is a resident of the Jungle Car. Prior to meeting Hazel, she had a family of her own, until they all died under mysterious circumstances, leaving her alone. At some point after the demise of her family, she met Hazel, and the two formed an inseparable bond.
Book Three - Cult of the Conductor[]
The Jungle Car[]
Upon meeting Grace and Simon in the Jungle Car, Tuba is playful, but initially aggressive, Capturing and tickling, but also threatening them. After some talking, Tuba sits back as Grace and Simon talk to Hazel about The Apex. Tuba and Hazel decide to go with Grace and Simon.
The Debutante Ball Car[]
Grace and Simon begin making plans about taking out Tuba. Near the end of this episode, Grace feels some kind of empathy towards Tuba.
Le Chat Chalet Car[]
In this episode, Tuba partakes in the snowball fight and has a good time. After the snowball fight, Tuba is mostly a minor character in this episode.
The Color Clock Car[]
In this episode, Tuba starts off as her normal self: begrudgingly following Grace and Simon with Hazel, and having constant arguments with Simon. Upon entering the Color Clock Car and meeting Roy, Tuba and Simon seemingly begin to form a somewhat good relationship, and Tuba opens up about her daughter, Bugle. After Tuba and Simon work together to solve the puzzle, the car begins to eject, separating Tuba and Hazel from Simon and Grace. Tuba throws Hazel to Grace but ends up dangling off the train, and Simon has to help her. However, instead of helping, Simon steps on Tuba's dangling hand, causing her to lose her grip and fall into one of the train's wheels which kills her, leaving Hazel devastated when Simon tells her.
The Campfire Car[]
Hazel holds a funeral for Tuba.
The Canyon of the Golden Winged Snakes Car[]
Tuba is mentioned by Hazel when she angrily explains to Grace that Simon is being mean to both of them.
The New Apex[]
Tuba's death is mentioned by an illusory version of Hazel when Grace is trapped within the Memory extractor. Later Tuba's murder, along with Hazel's trauma and Simon's death act as motivations for Grace to disband the Apex and its anti denizen ideology.
Trivia[]
- Tuba is red/green colorblind.
- Hazel twice states that Tuba had children. However, only Bugle is mentioned by name.
