Overview

"The Black Market Car" is the 1st episode of Season 2 of Infinity Train and the 11th episode overall. It aired on January 6, 2020.

Synopsis[]

Mirror Tulip tries to create a new life for herself outside the Mirror World.

Plot[]

Sometime after separating from Tulip, Mirror Tulip (or M.T. for short) proceeds to give herself a grunge makeover and travel the Infinity Train to her heart's content, using a black spray paint can to cover any reflective surfaces and taking down any wanted posters with her image on it. M.T. eventually visits a Black Market Car full of strange alien creatures. When one of them examines her with a glass eye, the Reflection Police officers, Mace and Sieve, jump through the reflection and chase her through the streets.

She manages to evade them by escaping into the next car, which resembles an autumnal forest. She sees a deer lying on the ground and hides behind it. When the Flecks burst into the car, the deer turns both itself and M.T. invisible. After the Flecks leave, M.T. tries to leave the deer behind, but he will not leave her alone. They spend a couple days together as M.T. begins to take a liking to the deer.

The next morning, M.T. wakes up to find the deer missing, and quickly finds that another person is interacting with the deer. She immediately becomes defensive. The other person introduces himself as Jesse. They get into an argument about whose deer it is, disputing over the magical powers their respective deer have; however, they soon realize that they've been hanging out with the same deer, who happens to have several different superpowers. Jesse reveals that he has named the deer Alan Dracula, which incites another argument when M.T. insists that the deer should be able to name itself. Suddenly, Alan Dracula falls through the layer of leaves on the ground into a deep chasm as both M.T. and Jesse look on in horror.

Trivia[]

  • Mirror Tulip is seen with brown pants in the beginning of the episode, but blue for the rest of it.
  • End tag: M.T. looking at her reflection in her hand while on board the Infinity Train.

Continuity[]

Behind the scenes[]

  • A big goal of the season was to ease audiences into the idea of the show following a character that wasn't Tulip, after years of viewers expecting that from the pilot.[2]
  • Owen Dennis originally wanted the episode to open with a hip-hop '80s anthem, which the crew had to listen to on repeat while working on the season: Kellye Perdue even boarded the opening scene to that music.
  • Justin Michael refers to this episode as his "Batman: The Animated Series episode", due to the combination of action sequences, legitimate drama, and Looney Tunes-esque gags. Kellye Perdue had objections to the mop gag in particular (which had been pitched by Sam Spina), finding it a little too slapstick.[2]
  • Tulip's multi-tool, which M.T. uses to survive in the Prime World, was originally meant to serve as some form of "Achilles' heel" for M.T., which would pay off during the finale. However, during the writing of "The Toad Car", the team realized it was too complicated a concept to execute, and so a moment was added into this episode of M.T. hiding the multi-tool in her boot.[3]
  • At one point the Reflection Police were to dive into one of the slug people's glass eye. This was cut by Owen Dennis, who thought the episode had too many eye bits, and Madeline Queripel was squeamish about things happening to eyes.[2]
  • Multiple shots had to be re-done in this episode after the crew noticed Jesse did not have his number.[4] The error made it all the way to the final edit, when they finally noticed and had to rush to redo it.[2]
  • Alan Dracula stiffly falling down the tree branches was one of the first jokes written for the entire season.[5]
