John W. Sweeny, Jr. was a judge on the New York Supreme Court, Appellate Division, First Department. He was elevated to this position by Governor Pataki in May of 2004. He was re-elected to the supreme court in 2013.[1][2][3] He retired from the bench in December 2019.[4]
2013 election
Sweeny ran for re-election to the Supreme Court 9th Judicial District. General: He was elected in the general election on November 5, 2013.[5][6][3]

Sweeny was rated "Highly Qualified" by New York's Independent Judicial Election Qualification Commissions (IJEQC).[7]
Education
Judge Sweeny earned an A.B. degree from the University of Notre Dame in 1971 and a J.D. degree from Fordham University School of Law in 1974.[1][2]
Career
Judge Sweeny began his legal career in 1974 as an associate of the law firm McCann, Ahern and Sommers. In 1976, he became a Confidential Law Secretary for John Donohoe of the State Supreme Court. Later that year, he began working as an Administrative Assistant District Attorney in Putnam County. He returned to the State Supreme Court in 1977 and worked as a confidential law secretary for Fred Dickinson through 1986. He became a Putnam County judge in 1987. He has served on the County, Family and Surrogate Courts of Putnam County. From 1987 to 1999, he also served as Acting Justice of the State Supreme Court. From 2000 until his elevation to the Appellate Division in 2004, he was a Senior Resident Justice in Putnam County for the State Supreme Court (2nd Judicial District).[1][2]
