|Gerald Duane "Boomer" Wright is running for State Representative, District 9, spanning the coast from Coos Bay up to Yachats and then east to Mapleton and Triangle Lake. Boomer has lived on the coast for nearly 50 years.
Boomer has been married to his wife, Susan, for 27 years. She is a well-respected nurse in Florence. They live in Reedsport with their dog, Winston and cat, Marvin. They have 4 adult children and 7 amazing grandchildren.
For 31 years Boomer taught third through sixth grade, served as a principal of an elementary and then a middle school, and completed his career in education as the Superintendent of the Mapleton School District.
Boomer was not ready for retirement after being superintendent of Mapleton Schools, so he got a job as the educational liaison for SELCO Credit union, then as the manager for the Sea Lion Caves. He ran this successful retail business for 5 years and had experience directing boards, overseeing million-dollar budgets, and worked with Travel Oregon to bring further tourism to the Oregon Coast.
Boomer has served and been a member of the local Elks, Lions, and Rotary Clubs. He also served on the Commission on Children of Lane County and Oregon Together. He has served as Cub Scout Den Leader and Boy Scout Chair Person of local Troop 777 and coached both baseball and girls softball teams. He was also recognized nationally for his successful Million Minutes Reading program while principal of Rhododendron Elementary K-5.
- Protecting Working Families - The State of Oregon penalizes our small businesses and entrepreneurs with new taxes and harmful regulations. As a former manager of a small business, I know the struggle firsthand of trying to comply with mandates created by Portland politicians. My priority will be creating and protecting jobs for local working families. We need our elected leaders to promote good ideas like the Jordan Cove Energy Project, which will bring hundreds of jobs to our community. I will also work to support our oppressed forestry, farming and fishing jobs, which are the backbone of our community.
- Preserving Our Rural Way of Life - As your Representative, I will vote NO on policies that don't fit our district. I would have been a NO vote on Cap and Trade, which would have caused prices for fuel and goods to skyrocket with little to no benefit to our environment. I would have voted NO on the tax on Oregon sales, which already is leading to an increase in cost of living, including the cost of public education. We need common sense solutions that work for our rural areas of Oregon, not just Portland. Cookie-cutter solutions have been tried and failed and we're bearing the brunt of the experimentation here on the Oregon Coast.
- Education - I had a successful career as a teacher, principal, and superintendent for 31 years in Florence and Mapleton. I know firsthand the struggles our teachers have in a system that is often failing our kids. They need more support and resources to teach kids, especially in rural areas like ours. Governor Kate Brown and her Department Education staff have a one-size-fits-Portland approach that is out of touch with coastal families. We need solutions that ensure that our tax money goes directly to teachers and into classrooms.
Protecting Working Families, Preserving Our Rural Way of Life, Education, Health Care, Veterans

Scorecards
A scorecard evaluates a legislator’s voting record. Its purpose is to inform voters about the legislator’s political positions. Because scorecards have varying purposes and methodologies, each report should be considered on its own merits. For example, an advocacy group’s scorecard may assess a legislator’s voting record on one issue while a state newspaper’s scorecard may evaluate the voting record in its entirety.
Ballotpedia is in the process of developing an encyclopedic list of published scorecards. Some states have a limited number of available scorecards or scorecards produced only by select groups. It is Ballotpedia’s goal to incorporate all available scorecards regardless of ideology or number.
