|I'm a proud Navy veteran! I enlisted in the Navy in 1992 and served as a Russian linguist, holding a top secret security clearance while being stationed at intelligence collections facilities in Hawaii and England. After serving over 12 years in the Navy and attaining the rank of E-6 (Petty Officer First Class) I returned to Quincy and got a master's degree in counseling from Quincy University. I have worked in a variety of minimum wage jobs in fast food, waitressing, retail, and printing, so I have long had a visceral understanding of the day-to-day economic struggles the working class face. I was born and raised in Quincy, IL. My family roots in the Quincy area go back to the 1800s. My moral and political beliefs were formed from listening to Gospel readings in daily Mass while attending Catholic schools. My guiding principle in my personal and political life is "Do unto others as you would have done unto you." My two primary goals in politics are to increase the political and economic power of the poor and working classes, and to create and maintain a robust culture and legislation of transparency and accountability in all government functions.
- Pro-union, Pro-worker, Pro-Veteran
- Supporting small farms and business by reducing government regulations
- transparency and accountability in Illinois state government
I am passionate about supporting all workers in IL-94. Minimum wage needs to be increased yearly to keep pace with inflation. Universal health care will relieve workers and employers of the considerable expenses entailed with for-profit health insurance. Generous paid leave will provide workers the time they need to take care of their families and themselves. Workers who are not currently eligible for union membership should have the right to join unions and enjoy union collective bargaining power and protections. Union and worker protections have a lot of room to be strengthened in Illinois, and I'll work to make that happen.
I'm also passionate about helping small businesses and small farms get started and thrive in west central Illinois. I'll work to reduce unnecessary regulatory burdens on small enterprises - to help create jobs, keep more money in the local economy, and provide consumers greater choice.
West central Illinois' two greatest assets are its people and its farmland. We need to stop sending our topsoil down the river, and our kids off to better work opportunities elsewhere. We can do that! We can make our district a leader in sustainable and profitable cooperative agriculture and food production. Small diverse farms provide greater consumer choice, food security and bio-security. We can properly fund affordable child care, schools, and provide everyone the education and training they need to get a good job without going into lifelong debt.
Empathy is the most important characteristic for an elected official. A representative has to understand the needs of their citizens, and feel a connection to them and their issues in order to provide effective representation.
I am an excellent listener and communicator. I was a professional eavesdropper in the military, and I have a masters degree in counseling. I am very good at listening to people and understanding their concerns. I am also a great writer and can communicate complex concepts clearly and effectively.
I was 15 years old when the space shuttle Challenger exploded. The shock of the disaster was later compounded by finding out that inadequate safety measures and reckless management practices were the causes of the accident. The incident helped me realize the importance of transparency and accountability in decision making, and how team work can make or break a project.
All Fired Up, by Pat Benatar. It's been a lifelong favorite - "I believe there comes a time, when everything just falls in line, we live and learn from our mistakes, the deepest cuts are healed by faith. All fired up!!" The lyrics and the electric guitar always lift my spirits.
I believe the greatest asset a state legislator can have is previous experience in working with collaborative teams on complex projects. Democracy can be messy, but its how society has made its greatest advances, by giving everyone a seat at the table and incorporating ideas from a variety of viewpoints. I've worked on teams, as a worker and a supervisor. Its deeply fulfilling when a team pulls together and works towards a worthy common goal, and gets results.
Illinois' financial problems need to be addressed in a way that fulfills our obligations to our creditors and our citizens. The Fair Tax will be an important first step in making the tax burden in Illinois more equitable and providing revenue needed to make Illinois financially stable in the short and long-term.
It is so important to build good relationships with fellow legislators! Everyone brings a unique and valuable viewpoint to collaboration and negotiations. One of my first tasks upon being elected will be connecting with legislators with common goals and working to make beneficial legislation become reality.
