reading is the process of receiving
interpreting information in language
from via the medium of print.
Why Reading Is Important
A Receptive Skill
Very active process because the reader is
actively involved to understand the
meaning of a message
Reading comprehension is the result of
interaction between the reader and the
text
Improve the function of the brain
Increase vocabulary & language skills
Improve theory of mind
Increase knowledge
Sharpens memory
Strengthens writing skills

To improve your state of mind.
To improve overall wellness
To obtain information

Types of Reading
Intensive reading
- type of reading that focuses on idiom and
vocabulary that taught by the teacher in
the classroom and that idiom and
vocabulary exist in poem, poetry, novel
or other sources
Eg. focuses on linguistic or semantic
details of a reading and focuses on structure
details such as grammar.
Each text is read thoroughly for
comprehension
Intensive reading involves learners
reading in detail with specific learning
aims and tasks
Activities for Intensive Reading ( 1. true
or false, 2. filling the gaps, 3. matching, 4
headings to paragraphs, 5. putting
jumbled sentences into correct orders)
Extensive Reading
- types of reading involves learners
reading texts for enjoyment and to
develop general reading skills.
Eg. many different kinds of books;
such as journals, newspapers and
magazine as you can, especially for
pleasure, and only need a general
understanding of the contents.
Aloud reading
- reading by using loud voice and
clearly. Eg - Reading poetry, dialogue,

Silent reading
- (activity is meant to train the
students to read) without voice in order
that the students can concentrate their
attention or though to comprehend the
texts..
Eg. The students read a text / content
to memorize.
Reading Theories
Schema theory
Top-down
Interactive reading theory
Schema Theories
Usebackground prior knowledge to
understand the text
Top-down
Readers use background information to
predict the meaning of language and they
are going to read
For example
Asking learners to predict what a
newspapers article might be about from
the headline or first sentence of the text
Interactive Reading Theory
For effective reading comprehension, the
reader uses both bottom-up and top-down
processes simultaneously throughout reading
Example
The reader uses a top-down approach to
predict meaning of the text, then moves to the
bottom-up to check whether that is really what
the writer is saying
