Aviation Directorate at Transport Canada.
The Civil Aviation Directorate at Transport Canada promotes the safety of the national air transportation system through its
regulatory framework and oversight activities. As part of the regulatory framework, we develop policies, guidelines, regulations,
standards and educational materials to advance civil aviation safety in Canada. Under the Civil Aviation Directorate, the Aviation
Safety Policy and Intelligence Branch is responsible for the development of aviation safety policy, and provides analysis,
coordination and advice in relation to Civil Aviation activities.
The successful candidate for this position may be required to provide support for: domestic space launch, cybersecurity in civil
aviation, air navigation modernization, search and rescue, aerodromes, engagement at the International Civil Aviation
Organization...and more! Our team is looking for a dynamic candidate who is looking to understand the intricacies of space launch
activities, can manage evolving priorities, and who will work well in our high-performance team.
Key Activities/Responsibilities:
• Assist in the development of regulations, requirements, standards and related means of compliance for the safe and secure
launch of commercial space vehicles and payloads from Canadian Territory.
•Identifies, reviews, and assesses practises relevant to commercial space launch activities, which may involve qualitative and
quantitative research to identify potential safety, security or policy risks and formulating recommendations to senior policy and
technical advisors and management.
•Supports the space launch safety standards development process and related policy analysis by: providing technical research and
advice; adapting advisory circulars, models and methodologies; performing calculations and conversions; and collecting and
disseminating complex information on space transportation-related issues for policy analysts, senior advisors and senior
management for review."
•Understands and helps to integrate internationally recognized standards, policies and best practises related to space
transportation into domestic regulation in a manner that reflects Canada's international commitments and obligations.
•Attends departmental, interdepartmental and federal/provincial/territorial working group meetings to assist and participate in: the
discussion of files/issues, coordination of responses, the preparation of presentations, interpretation and discussion of trends,
explanation of research and regulatory requirements, and development of space transportation-related policies and strategies.
•Maintains and enhances professional skills and acquires space transportation-related knowledge through close work and
cooperation with analysts/senior policy and technical advisors, reading professional periodicals, journals, reports, and attendance
at training sessions, conferences/seminars/workshops, as recommended and approved by the supervisor.
Qualifications
• Ability to research and analyze complex and/or technical subject matter, and to synthesize research results;
•Background in aerospace engineering (or related field)
•Proficient oral and written communication skills;
•Ability to work independently and collaboratively;
•Experience managing multiple assignments simultaneously;
•Ability to work within tight timelines;
Assets
• Knowledge and/or experience in rocketry, launch vehicles and launch & flight dynamics.
•Knowledge and/or experience with complex flight systems and operations
•Knowledge and/or experience in safety engineering principles and best practices.
•Experience developing briefing notes and/or presentations to summarize complex issues for senior management is an asset;
•Experience in planning, developing and undertaking projects or initiatives;
•Experience (academic or professional) in assessing the impacts of emerging/disruptive technologies is an asset, but not required.
