I. Read the following text and identify the different parts. In each paragraph, mark the point in green, mark the
illustration in blue, and explanation in red.
When I was little, every weekend I went with my father to walk in the forest in Maule. I loved seeing the plants and
animals! Today, my favorite forest is gone because a local company built a big factory there. This problem from Maule is
very common in Chile, and it has serious effects on the environment. In my opinion, deforestation is the most serious
environmental problem in Chile because it contributes to global warming, destroys animals’ habitats and creates deserts.
First, cutting down trees increases global warming. To illustrate, trees absorb carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas. If we
don’t have trees, carbon dioxide levels will rise. Consequently, the planet will have more greenhouse gases in the
atmosphere, which trap the sun’s heat and make temperatures rise. In Chile, the temperature continues to rise: last
summer it was more than 40° C! Furthermore, global warming causes climate change and problems like floods and
droughts. In summary, deforestation is a major cause of global warming.
Second, deforestation is a big problem for different species that live in and near the forests. For example, 80% of the
planet’s animals live in forests. If we destroy their habitats, they will not survive. To illustrate this point, Chile has many
endangered animals that will die if we destroy the forests, including the Huemul deer and the Chilote fox. For this reason,
destroying Chile’s forests will cause the death of many animals.
Finally, when people cut down forests, they make deserts. To exemplify, forests protect the soil. If we cut down the trees
or burn the forests, rain will eliminate the top layer of dirt. Therefore, the quality of the land will be very bad. For example,
the land in the mountains in Maule is worse every year. Also, the trees are an important part of the water cycle and protect
the earth from the sun. To summarize, if we lose our forests, the land will be drier and the climate will be hotter.
In conclusion, a worrying environmental issue is global warming because it causes more harmful greenhouse gases,
eliminates different species’ homes and increases the number of deserts.
