Mochi Magazine is run entirely by an incredible staff of volunteers, ranging from students to professionals, who believe in our mission. We are always looking to add to our editorial, business, and design teams. Our volunteer positions require anywhere from one to five hours a week, depending on our publishing schedule. We ask for a one-year commitment, especially in more senior roles, though exceptions can be made. Mochi does not have an office space, so most communication takes place online. We welcome all applications, and selected applicants will interview with a Mochi representative.

Mochi Magazine is seeking a beauty editor to execute relevant story ideas for an Asian American audience. You love to experiment with new products, keep up with TikTok trends and Asian American influencers, and think deeply and critically about appropriation in beauty culture. Your role models include Michelle Le, editor-in-chief of Allure, and Kristina Rodulfo, Beauty Director of Women’s Health. The role entails pitching, writing and editing stories for the beauty section. The ideal candidate also is self-motivated, reliable and a skilled communicator, as this position requires working closely with staff writers and keeping track of articles within the Beauty section.
Desired Qualifications & Responsibilities:
- Love all things beauty-related
- Critically analyze trends, current events, and beauty culture
- Prior experience as a writer; editing experience is preferred, but not required

Mochi Magazine is looking for staff writers to pitch and write stories on a regular basis throughout the year. The ideal candidate is passionate about the diverse experiences of Asian American women, in addition to current events, entertainment, and news that affect our communities. Writers will have opportunities to brainstorm ideas, receive editorial mentorship, and write articles for quarterly issues and ongoing columns.
Desired Qualifications & Responsibilities:
- Previous writing experience
- Strong interview, research and writing skills
- Time commitment: Staff writers will plan for and write articles over a three-week window during each quarterly publication cycle; the time commitment will vary depending on how many articles the writer is assigned to and is interested in throughout the rest of the year
Mochi Magazine is seeking a copy editor who will edit stories for grammar, punctuation, clarity, word usage, and adherence to AP style and our in-house style guide. Our ideal candidate is someone who notices typos and incorrect use of punctuation and can subtly rewrite sentences or suggest alternative wordings while maintaining the writer’s voice and message.
Desired Qualifications & Responsibilities:
- A sharp eye and extensive knowledge of English grammar and AP style
- Strong attention to consistency and detail
- Must be available to edit 1-3 articles (ranging from 1-3 hours/article, depending on length and complexity) during Mochi’s quarterly publication cycle, as well as occasionally in between issues as needs arise
- Prior copy editing experience is a must; candidates will be asked to take a brief copy editing test.
- Deadline-oriented and reliable
- Monitor Slack weekly for copy editing assignments
- Copy editors are welcome to attend editorial meetings to pitch and write for Mochi.
Mochi Magazine is looking for an illustrator to create visuals to accompany our publication’s articles, spanning activism and arts and culture to personal essays. The illustrator will collaborate closely with the Art Director and Editorial Team members to brainstorm concepts and develop artwork that convey the article’s main message, while keeping in mind our target audience and adhering to Mochi’s brand. We ask that those interested in the role stay on and contribute to Mochi for a minimum of six months (two quarterly issues).
Desired Qualifications & Responsibilities:
- Experience or interest in creating meaningful content for Asian American young women and nonbinary people
- Previous illustration experience, if possible – we’d love to see previous examples of your work!
- Ability to execute across (or at least experiment with) a variety of styles and mediums

Mochi Magazine seeks three social media coordinators to help run our social channels. We are looking for three coordinators who will focus on our individual channels: Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn. Incoming team members will join our Social Media Coordinator who currently focuses on TikTok.
Social media coordinators write copy to promote Mochi’s articles and blog posts, assist with graphics creation, engage with our audiences on each platform, schedule posts, and share relevant content that would be of interest to our audience of Asian American young women and nonbinary people. Social media coordinators will work closely with all other members of our social media team, including other Coordinators and our Social Media Manager, Marketing Designers, and Editorial Team on content creation and strategy. The ideal candidate has prior social media experience, keeps up with social media trends, and understands how platforms works together, but play a different role in a social media strategy.
Qualifications:
- Since the entire Mochi team works remotely in different parts of the U.S., the ability to work effectively independently and as a team across multiple time zones is crucial.
- Experience or interest in creating meaningful content for Asian American young women and nonbinary people
- Working knowledge of SEO and social media platforms (e.g., best practices, analytics, trends, etc.)
- For Facebook and LinkedIn, experience with paid social (particularly in Facebook Business Manager) is a plus
- Experience or interest in increasing engagement on social media
- Experience or interest in creating meaningful content for Asian American young women and nonbinary people
- Understanding of how to adapt editorial stories to social media
- Prior experience as a writer (especially for social copy); copy editing experience preferred, but not required

Mochi Magazine is looking for a video content creator to produce and edit video content and help us develop our video capabilities. Though this role will mostly specialize in short social video (think TikTok, Instagram Reels, and YouTube Shorts), there are opportunities to work on other projects as needed (e.g., quarterly issue features, etc.). This person isn’t afraid to share ideas and experiment, pull together the right people and give direction, while receiving feedback. The role will work closely with the Marketing (Social) Team, but the video content creator should feel comfortable sitting in on Editorial Team meetings and reaching out to different staff members to develop and execute ideas. Occasionally, the video content creator should also be okay with stepping in as the talent when necessary.
