Bulker grounds in Delaware river
No pollution reported or injuries, US Coast Guard says
Supramax Algoma Verity grounded near Philadelphia on Wednesday evening. No pollution or injuries were reported, the US Coast Guard said on Thursday
A SUPRAMAX ran aground in a section of the Delaware river off Philadelphia on Wednesday evening.
The Bahamas-flagged, 50,165 dwt Algoma Verity (IMO: 9183776) was approximately a mile north of the Benjamin Franklin Bridge when US Coast Guard watchstanders received a report from the pilot at about 1830 hrs local time that the ship had run aground.
No pollution or injuries were reported, the agency said in a statement on Thursday.
The vessel was aground outside the main shipping channel on Thursday morning, according to Lloyd’s List Intelligence vessel-tracking data and the USCG.
“A team from Coast Guard Sector Delaware Bay and the vessel’s representatives are on board monitoring the situation and formulating a plan to safely move the vessel to a nearby terminal,” the USCG said.
“A safety zone has been established around Algoma Verity restricting vessel traffic from the Benjamin Franklin Bridge to Tioga Marine Terminal.”
Vessels seeking to transit the area are required to contact the USCG one hour prior to their transit.
The cause of the grounding is being investigated, the USCG said.
