What Are Spritz Cookies?

Spritz cookies are German cookies made from rich, buttery shortcrust pastry. The name comes from the German word “spritzen” which means “to squirt,” which refers to the way the dough is pushed through the cookie press.

Spritz Cookies Ingredients

These are the six ingredients you’ll need to make spritz cookies:

  • Butter: This spritz cookie recipe starts with two sticks of softened butter.
  • Sugar: Sweeten things up with ½ cup of white sugar.
  • Egg yolks: Egg yolks lend richness, moisture, and flavor.
  • Vanilla: Vanilla extract enhances the overall flavor of the spritz cookies.
  • Flour: All-purpose flour gives the cookies structure.
  • Baking powder: Baking powder acts as a leavener, which means it helps the cookies rise.

  • 2 egg yolks

  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract

  • 2 ¼ cups all-purpose flour

  • ½ teaspoon baking powder
