This is my grandma's old-fashioned blackberry cobbler recipe, and I have found none that compare. I always make it with blackberries, but you can use any fruit you want.

Ingredients

Original recipe (1X) yields 12 servings

  • 3 cups white sugar, divided

  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch

  • 2 pinches salt, divided

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour

  • 2 teaspoons baking powder

  • 1 cup softened butter

  • 1 cup milk

  • 2 pounds fresh blackberries

  • 2 cups boiling water

Directions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).

  2. Whisk 1 1/2 cups sugar, cornstarch, and one pinch salt together in a small bowl.

  3. Whisk flour, remaining 1 1/2 cups sugar, baking powder, and remaining pinch salt together in a large bowl. Stir in softened butter until mixture resembles cornmeal, then stir in milk until moistened.

  4. Spread blackberries in an even layer in the bottom of a 9x13-inch baking dish; spoon batter evenly over top. Sprinkle sugar-cornstarch mixture over batter, then pour boiling water over top.

  5. Bake in the preheated oven until fruit is bubbling and topping is golden brown, 40 to 45 minutes.
