Ingredients

Original recipe (1X) yields 12 servings

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour

  • 2 teaspoons baking powder

  • 1 teaspoon salt

  • 2 cups white sugar, divided

  • cup softened butter

  • 1 cup milk

  • 2 cups fresh blackberries

  • 2 cups boiling water

Directions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).

  2. Whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt in a medium bowl. Set aside.

  3. Beat together 1 cup sugar and softened butter in a large bowl with an electric mixer until light and fluffy. Mix in flour mixture alternately with milk until no large lumps remain. Pour into a 9x13-inch baking dish.

  4. Arrange blackberries over batter; sprinkle with remaining 1 cup sugar. Pour boiling water over the top.

  5. Bake in the preheated oven until batter has firmed and berries are soft, about 50 minutes.
