Ingredients

Original recipe (1X) yields 6 servings

  • 1 cup all-purpose baking mix (such as Bisquick)

  • ½ cup milk

  • cup white sugar

  • 2 teaspoons vegetable oil

  • 1 cup water

  • cup white sugar

  • 2 cups fresh blackberries

Directions

  1. Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). Grease a 9x9-inch baking dish.

  2. Whisk baking mix, milk, 1/3 cup sugar, and oil together in a bowl until no large lumps remain. Pour into the prepared baking dish. Whisk water and 2/3 cup sugar in a clean bowl until mixed. Gently fold in berries until evenly coated; spread berry mixture over baking mix batter.

  3. Bake in the preheated oven until golden on top and fruit is bubbling, about 45 minutes.

Recipe Tips

It might seem like a lot of water, but when mixed with the berries and sugar, it turns into a syrup, and once cooked, it basically turns into jelly.

If using canned or frozen sweetened fruit, omit sugar and use juice instead of water.
