My article examines the relationship between space, class and gender using wealthy golf clubs in contemporary Mexico City as a case study. I argue that these clubs are strategic sites where economic elites naturalize the arbitrary logic of their own privilege through the spatial reification of class and gender principles. The article is based on two main sources of information, a) an ethnography of three exclusive golf clubs; and b) 58 in-depth interviews conducted among golfers, caddies, and other people related to the world of golf. In theoretical terms, I argue that Bourdieu's concepts of doxa and habitus represent two notions that allow researchers to examine the multiple ways in which economic elites perpetuate dynamics of domination and subordination through space and spatial practices. This work fills a void in the literature of contemporary elites in Latin America as well as suggests a studying-up space-sensitive sociological perspective.

This paper explores an ecological approach to the perception of musical meaning. Ethnographically informed by a Yoreme understanding of seeing and hearing as interrelated perceptual activities, this paper critically evaluates the concept of soundscape and the dichotomization and hierarchization of our (Western) perception faculties. It is a contribution to the growing number of
publications with an integrative humanistic-scientific theoretical approach to ethnomusicology, based on insights gained from indigenous cosmovision, perception of sound, and human-animal-environment relationships.

This book, published in August of 2016, tells the story of the wholly forgotten nation which--2000 years ago-- ruled a territory in West Mexico the size of Guatemala. Unlike the Aztecs and Mayas, their name was never known, but today they are called the people of the Teuchitlán Tradition, after the site where many of their trademark "circular pyramids" were excavated and studied during the last twenty years.

With two new publications, the Museum of Mormon History in Mexico has firmly established itself as a leading venue for the production of Mormon history in Mexico. The Spanish translation and English commentary on Part 1 of F. LaMond Tulllis's Mormons in Mexico is a significant contribution to both Spanish and English readers. This text, published through Deseret Book, makes a valuable resource available to Spanish speakers. It also offers an impressive correction of documentary errors in Tullis's interpretation and historical data. A second significant contribution to the literature on the same subject is a series of four articles available in Spanish or English by Fernando R. Gómez Páez (museum president). Read side by side, the translation of Tullis's book and this new selection of articles by the museum's president provide a worthwhile and balanced introduction to Mexican Mormon history. Readers will recognize that Mormon history in Mexico extends well beyond the colonies in Chihuahua and Sonora. The most interesting stories may very well come from central Mexico. Mexican Mormons now have a significant voice in the writing of their own Mormon histories.

This article explores the importance of non-capitalist space within the global political economy. The issue of how to categorise and understand space in so-called peripheral regions such as Latin America has been a contentious one. Whilst many radical analyses have focused on the dynamics of capitalism in relation to the geography of development, explaining how it has been able to survive and grow, this article makes the case for a more multi-linear theoretical framework with which to view the socioeconomic landscape. This is inspired not only by the later writings of Marx but also the specific Marxian class analysis of those involved in Rethinking Marxism. Via a focus on Oaxaca in southern Mexico, this article highlights both the survival and the recreation of spaces of non-capitalism, and provides an argument for why we should consider these to be important for transformative action more broadly, whilst also discussing their potential limitations.

Even though anthropogenic climate change is largely caused by industrialized nations, its burden is distributed unevenly with poor developing countries suffering the most. A common response to livelihood insecurities and destruction is migration. Using Peter Singer's ‘historical principle’, this paper argues that a morally just evaluation requires taking causality between climate change and migration under consideration. The historical principle is employed to emphasize shortcomings in commonly made philosophical arguments to oppose immigration. The article concludes that none of these arguments is able to override the moral responsibility of industrialized countries to compensate for harms that their actions have caused.

There are more types of borders today than ever before in history. Borders of all kinds define every aspect of social life in the twenty-first century. From the biometric data that divides the smallest aspects of our bodies to the aerial drones that patrol the immense expanse of our domestic and international airspace, we are defined by borders. They can no longer simply be understood as the geographical divisions between nation-states. Today, their form and function has become too complex, too hybrid. What we need now is a theory of the border that can make sense of this hybridity across multiple domains of social life.

Rather than viewing borders as the result or outcome of pre-established social entities like states, Thomas Nail reinterprets social history from the perspective of the continual and constitutive movement of the borders that organize and divide society in the first place. Societies and states are the products of bordering, Nail argues, not the other way around. Applying his original movement-oriented theoretical framework "kinopolitics" to several major historical border regimes (fences, walls, cells, and checkpoints), Theory of the Border pioneers a new methodology of "critical limology," that provides fresh tools for the analysis of contemporary border politics.

Over the past 200 years, thousands of books, reports, magazines, and articles have been published about ancient Mexico, part of the greater cultural region of Mesoamerica. Part of this is about the few ancient native manuscripts that have miraculously been spared from the blind wrath of the Spanish missionaries. However, what has struck me in the many years that I have studied these windows in time of the ancient civilizations in Mesoamerica is that little attention has been and is paid to the artistic qualities of the makers of these manuscripts. For some of these manuscripts can be categorized as "indigenous art" on a very high creative and artistic level. It is truly fascinating to see how much information these artists have managed to bring together in a logical context and in an often small space. There are hardly any images to be found without any kind of information. True masters of their craft, building on and refining age-old traditions and knowledge with very limited resources such as reed pens and a limited number of natural dyes. A very special example of this is page 1 of the Codex Fejérváry-Mayer in which various philosophies, principles and ways of life important to ancient Mexican cultures have been merged into one scene, in a truly fantastic and harmonious whole. And all this on a rectangular piece of deerskin of about 17.5 x 16.5 cm. A true pocket-sized artistic masterpiece.

This paper aims to fill some of the glaring gaps in the history of Mexico’s pre-cartel drug trade by viewing it as part of an international system connecting European and Latin suppliers with North American organized crime syndicates. It opens with a brief review of Mexico’s early development as a supplier of both narcotics and alcohol following the passage of prohibition laws in the United States. It examines the role of major U.S. organized figures, and their prominent “legitimate” business partners in businesses such as racing, gambling, and the cross-border narcotics trade. After World War II, U.S. crime organizations shifted their source of supply from Mexico to Europe, where more advanced chemists converted Turkish opium and morphine base into prized white heroin. However, almost from the start, French Corsican and Sicilian traffickers used Mexico as a transit country to evade U.S. Customs and narcotics agents at East Coast ports and the Canadian border. Mexico thus became deeply integrated into a global drug supply chain, at the same time “modernizing” leaders such as President Alemán were opening Mexico up to international trade and capital. Ultimately, as we will see, Miguel Félix Gallardo and the "Guadalajara cartel" inherited the priceless business and political connections of this international network, allowing them to enjoy a meteoric rise with protection from the Mexican state.

To examine the prevalence of depressive symptoms and suicidal ideation, their comorbidity, and associated risk factors in adolescence. A self-administered questionnaire was completed in class by students in three middle schools (grades 6 through 8) enrolling more than 3,200 students. Usable questionnaires were obtained from 2,614 (81.5%), of which 924 were Anglo and 1,354 were of Mexican origin Depression was measured using the 20-item Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale and suicidal ideation using four items on thoughts of death and suicide. The minority adolescents reported significantly higher crude prevalence rates of symptoms of depression and thoughts of suicide than their Anglo counterparts. Prevalence rates were highest for females of Mexican origin. There was a strong association between depression and suicidal ideation in both ethnic groups. Multivariate logistic regression analyses indicated significant correlates of depressive symptoms were suicidal ideation (adjusted odds ratio = 10.9), loneliness, and use of English, in that order. Significant correlates of suicidal ideation were depression (adjusted odds ratio = 10.6), loneliness, two-parent household, use of English, and being of Mexican origin. More than 80% of those with high ratings on suicidal ideation scored as depressed in both ethnic groups. Results are consistent with other studies suggesting rates of suicidal ideation among adolescents are in the 10% to 20% range, while rates of depressive symptoms are in the 35% to 50% range using standard caseness scores. Mexican-American youths appear to be at higher risk than Anglo youths, particularly for suicidal ideation. In addition, it appears that youths who are lonely are more likely to report higher rates of both depression and suicidal ideation. The data also indicate that youths who spoke only or mostly English reported lower rates of depression and suicidal ideation, suggesting that acculturation may play a role as well.

Políticas de ciencia, tecnología e innovación para el desarrollo: La experiencia latinoamericana Hoy en día se reconoce que la ciencia, la tecnología y la innovación ha sido un elemento crítico para el crecimiento económico tanto de los países desarrollados, como de los países emergen-tes exitosos. Aunque a lo largo de los últimos 20 años la región de América Latina y el Caribe ha realizado un progreso notable respecto a la mejora del clima de negocios, el establecimien-to de un régimen macroeconómico más estable y certero, así como un continuo proceso de integración con la economía global, es también claro que estos cambios no han sido suficien-tes para desencadenar procesos convergentes (catching up) de innovación y productividad. De hecho, las fallas de mercado y sistémicas que obstaculizan la innovación siguen estando presentes; los gobiernos han fracasado en diseñar propuestas de política adecuadas para su solución. Hoy en día, la brecha de inversión en innovación entre América Latina y las econo-mías más exitosas es más grande de lo que era 20 años atrás. A pesar de este escenario gris, algunas luces de optimismo están emergiendo. En primer lugar, después de muchos años de inacción, la región ha comenzado a invertir nuevamente, y más significativamente, en educación, particularmente, en disciplinas relacionadas con ciencia, tecnología e ingeniería. En segundo lugar, después de muchas oscilaciones en las políticas de innovación, hay ahora un creciente consenso en enfatizar que la construcción de capacidades de investigación y capital humano necesitan complementarse con un constante estímulo desde el lado de la demanda (de parte de las empresas y sociedad civil), y en la solución de las fallas de coordinación que impiden la interacción entre oferta y demanda de conocmiento. Este libro conjunta la historia de ocho países de América Latina que han seguido patrones convergentes, pero también idiosincráticos, que han dado cabida a una nueva generación de intervenciones políticas que, mediante la solución de las fallas de mercado y coordinación, activan los sistemas de innovación. Aunque es muy temprano para señalar que estas reformas institucionales han tenido un impacto, ya están generando una rica evidencia y aprendizaje que puede ser crítica para el futuro del diseño de políticas de ciencia, tecnología e innovación, de la construcción de capacidades y de experimentación.

Se analiza la naturaleza de la revocación del mandato como mecanismo de control político de democracia directa, así como las razones por las que el Pleno de la Suprema Corte de Justicia de la Nación optó por declararla inconstitucional y si su implementación genera mayor legitimidad democrática.

El presente texto analiza el estado de la institucionalización de la CID a nivel mundial, pasando por sus etapas más representativas, para posteriormente ahondar en la participación mexicana en el campo de la CID desde 1940 y el activismo de Alemania en el referido sector de la política internacional. Además de ello, la presente investigació aborda en su último capítulo el origen, la fundamentación, las acciones más representativas y los resultados más relevantes del proyecto de fortalecimiento institucional de la AMEXCID instrumentado por Alemania y México.

El contenido de esta investigación representa un tema de alta relevancia para las Relaciones Internacionales. Ante la presencia de cada vez más adversidades en el sistema internacional de diferente índole, Alemania y México decidieron cerrar filas para contribuir conjuntamente a su combate.

Among the deficiencies demonstrated by the world financial crisis of 2008–9, one was the limited capacity of G-8 to provide for global economic governance. The developed economies quickly realised that they should seek joint solutions and coordinated policies in cooperation with the leading emerging-market economies. As a result, the G-20 turned into the main forum for managing the crisis. This in fact pointed to an early institutional acknowledgement that important changes were underway in the global distribution of power. These changes derive from the substantially higher growth rates of the emerging-market economies in comparison with those of the developed economies, a trend named ‘the rise of the rest’ (Zakaria, 2008, pp. 2–3).

Uno de los aspectos más importante tras descubrimiento de América fue el proceso de conquista y ocupación del territorio que llevó a cabo la corona española. En este ámbito, el papel de las órdenes mendicantes (franciscanos, dominicos y agustinos) fue decisivo, ya que fueron las encargadas de llevar a cabo la empresa evangelizadora en el Nuevo Mundo.

Estas órdenes, con la ayuda de los indígenas, levantaron grandes conventos en el virreinato de Nueva España para expandir el cristianismo por este nuevo territorio y, partiendo de la misma tipología conventual occidental, desarrollaron una serie de nuevos conjuntos arquitectónicos que dejan de tener las características europeas. Se trata de una nueva arquitectura donde se fusiona la tradición occidental con la precolombina.

Se van generando así las primeras expresiones de arquitectura mestiza del siglo XVI, entendidas no como una mezcla de elementos de ambas culturas, sino como una nueva expresión donde se sintetizan las sensibilidades de ambos pueblos.

Lo que se plantea en este trabajo es el análisis y la demostración de este mestizaje mediante tres conventos, centrándonos en el legado que llevaban consigo tanto del fraile europeo como el indio mesoamericano.

Latino immigrants are the largest source of immigrant workers in the United States. In this study, 11 first-generation Latino immigrants (8 men, 3 women) living in the Midwest were interviewed about their work experiences. Interview data were analyzed using consensual qualitative research methods (Hill, Thompson, & Williams, 1997). Five domains associated with the data included work for survival and power, work for social connections, work as self-determination, work barriers in the Midwest, and access to work in the Midwest. We identify ways in which vocational psychologists can intervene to work effectively with Latino newcomers seeking employment in the United States and to support their transition into new settlement communities. Suggestions for future research with immigrant workers are discussed.

Echinococcosis is a frequent hepatic parasitic disease in several countries but it is practically absent in Mexico. A cattle strain of Echinococcus granulosus was identified by RAPD, PCR-RFLP and mitochondrial CO1 gene analysis in an autochthonous case. The parasite was obtained after a laparoscopic excision of a liver cyst from a patient that was symptomatic for 6 years but mis-diagnosed before hospitalization.

Background: Hypocholesterolemia is common among tuberculous patients and is associated with mortality in miliary cases. Some in vitro studies have shown that cholesterol is necessary for the good functioning of macrophages and lymphocytes. Study objectives: To determine whether a cholesterol-rich diet could accelerate sputum sterilization in patients with pulmonary tuberculosis. Design: An 8-week follow-up, randomized, controlled trial carried out from March 2001 to January 2002. Setting: A third-level hospital for respiratory diseases in Mexico City.

O agravamento da pandemia de Covid-19 no México, logo no início de 2021, fez crescer a demanda por oxigênio e insumos na capital. Heliopsis longipes (Compositae) is a Mexican plant used as analgesic in pain toothache. A solution of 10 g/ml of dichloromethane extract from this plant showed analgesic activity determined by means of GABA release in mice brain slices. Through a bioassay-directed separation, fractions G-1, G-2, G-4 and G-6 at the same concentration were active. Affinin was the unique and common active compound, and evoke the GABA release 0.5 min after administration at 1 × 10 −4 M concentration. Inactive compound were undeca-2E-en-8,10-dyinoic acid isobutylamide, hinokinin, 2-hydroxyhinokinin, 3␤-sn-glyceroyl-(1-palmitoxy)urs-12-ene, 13(18)-ursen-3␤-ol, 13(18)-ursen-3␤-acetate, ␤-sitosterol and stigmasterol. The analgesic activity of Heliopsis longipes could be associated to affinin.

This paper explores the evolution in the definition of ―quality‖ at the National Institute of the Found for Housing of the Workers (Infonavit). Infonavit is a Mexican organization created to collect a compulsory social security contribution aimed to finance low interest mortgages for private sector workers. In 2000, Infonavit began a deep transformation that included increasing the quality of service. However, the challenge of offering housing that provides quality of life to their owners required the coordination and induction of certain behaviors among a wide array of actors, including municipal authorities, private developers and beneficiaries. Therefore, service quality had to be reinterpreted beyond compliance with standards and client satisfaction in order to improve the coordination between public, private and social actors. 6,10,14-Trimethylpentadecan-2-one (Hexahydrofarnesyl acetone; HHA) previously has been found to be a major component in tibial fragrances of male orchid bees, Euglossa spp. HHA is a chiral molecule with four possible stereoisomers, (6R, 10R)-, (6R, 10S)-, (6S, 10R)-, and (6S, 10S)-6,10,14-trimethylpentadecan-2-one. In the present study, we characterized HHA extracted from Euglossa as the pure enantiomer (6R, 10R)-6,10,14-trimethylpentadecan-2-one. During bioassays in Mexico and Panama, the synthetic RR-isomer attracted males of six species of orchid bees, including three that were known to contain HHA in their tibial fragrances. Possible sources of HHA for wild bees are flowers of euglossophilous orchids and aroids. With a molecular weight of 268, HHA is the largest natural molecule known to attract male orchid bees in pure form. Its attractiveness to males suggests that low-volatility compounds have a function in male signals, e.g., serve as a "base note" in complex odor bouquets.

La relación entre los medios sociales y la participación política de los jóvenes en diferentes contextos, ha sido materia de estudio en la academia durante la última década. Con el objetivo de examinar si en efecto existía un cambio en las preferencias en el consumo de información sobre política entre los jóvenes, se realizó un estudio en cuatro estados de México durante un proceso electoral nacional en 2015. Este mismo estudio se replicó durante las elecciones presidenciales del año 2018. En términos generales, los resultados obtenidos durante la elección no variaron de manera significativa de un proceso electoral a otro. La presente investigación pretende contribuir al debate académico sobre un fenómeno que en algún momento se consideró emergente, pero que en la actualidad parece encontrarse en un proceso de consolidación.
