Maurice Ravel's Stunning Piano Writing
Ravel’s Gaspard de La Nuit was written in 1908. It’s three movements contain some of the most intricate, poetic and technically difficult piano music ever written. They were inspired by the fantastical poems of Aloysius Bertrand. The first movement, Ondine, is about a seductive underwater nymph, and Ravel’s music is unprecedentedly rich and virtuosic in presenting an array of shimmering watery textures of various sorts. The music in this extract comes from the climax of the movement, in which giant tertiary steps of harmony are presented in complex cascades of notes in both hands. On the page it looks almost unplayable, but the passage is worked out with extraordinary precision so that the patterns lie under the fingers with the thumbs playing a crucial melodic role.

Movements 3 and 4 were subsequently orchestrated by Ravel, while Movement 5 was orchestrated by Percy Grainger, among other.
Miroirs has five movements, each dedicated to a member of Les Apaches:
1. "Noctuelles" ("Night Moths") - Dedicated to Léon-Paul Fargue, Noctuelles is a highly chromatic work, maintaining a dark, nocturnal mood throughout. The middle section is calm with rich, chordal melodies, and the recapitulation takes place a fifth below the first entry.
2. "Oiseaux tristes" ("Sad Birds") - Dedicated to Ricardo Viñes, this movement represents a lone bird whistling a sad tune, after which others join in. The rambunctious middle section is offset by a solemn cadenza which brings back the melancholy mood of the beginning.
3. "Une barque sur l'océan" ("A boat on the Ocean") - Dedicated to Paul Sordes, the piece recounts a small boat as it sails upon the waves of the ocean. Arpeggiated sections and sweeping melodies imitate the flow of ocean currents. It is the longest piece of the set, and, with the exception of Alborada del Gracioso, the most technically difficult.
4. "Alborada del gracioso" ("The Gracioso's Aubade") - Dedicated to Michel-Dimitri Calvocoressi, Alborada is a technically challenging piece that incorporates Spanish musical themes into its complicated melodies.
5. "La vallée des cloches" ("The Valley of Bells") - Dedicated to Maurice Delage, the piece evokes the sounds of various bells through its use of sonorous harmonies.

Ravel: Le Tombeau de Couperin (Milstein, Lortie)
Is there any composer whose music expends more craft, on a bar-by-bar basis, than Ravel?
Well, ok, so that isn’t really a sensible or meaningful question, but it’s hard to escape the feeling when you’re actually listening to Ravel that his music is put together with a level of care and precision that no other composer quite matches. Dedicated to 6 friends who died in WWI, Le Tombeau de Couperin is the last set of solo piano works Ravel wrote, as well as the last works he wrote in any “antique” form. Le Tombeau represents a fusion of classical discipline & economy with colouristic imagination of the highest order – each of these pieces could be the subject of a longish essay, and despite my best efforts any description will bust YT’s limit, so I’ve put it in the comments.

Maurice Ravel - Le tombeau de Couperin, orchestration completed by Zoltán Kocsis (1917/1919)
Composer: Joseph Maurice Ravel (March 7, 1875 – December 28, 1937)
Orchestra: Hungarian National Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Zoltán Kocsis
00:00 I - Prélude
03:13 II - Fugue (orch. Kocsis)
06:26 III - Forlane
12:29 IV - Rigaudon
15:31 V - Menuet
20:43 VI - Toccata (orch. Kocsis)
I much prefer the original organization of the piano suite, so it is unfortunate Ravel didn't orchestrate the fugue and toccata himself. Nonetheless, Kocsis's orchestrations of these missing movements are brilliant.

► Fugue - Allegro moderato 03:04 (Dedication: second lieutenant Jean Cruppi)
► Forlane - Allegretto 06:59 (Dedication: lieutenant Gabriel Deluc)
► Rigaudon - Assez vif 12:56 (Dedication: Pierre et Pascal Gaudin)
► Menuet - Allegro moderato 15:56 (Dedication: Jean Dreyfus)
► Toccata - Vif 20:36 (Dedication: captain Joseph de Marliave)
■ About Luca Buratto:
Winner of the 2015 edition of the Honens International Piano Competition in Calgary, his playing stands out for its “fiery imagination and finesse” (Musical America). He has long been described as “a name to watch” (The Guardian) and “no ordinary virtuoso” (The Telegraph). The periodical International Piano defined his playing as “masterly”, and his highly acclaimed interpretations of the prolific British composer Thomas Adès further reveal the versatility of “an artist that is as illuminating as he is fearless” (ConcertoNet). Recent appearances include solo recitals and orchestral concerts in prestigious venues such as Wigmore Hall in London, Carnegie Hall in New York, Berlin's Konzerthaus, and the Victoria Concert Hall in Singapore, to mention but a few. At home as a soloist or performing in recitals, he has participated at festivals and residencies from the “Martha Argerich Project” of the Lugano Festival to the Swiss Verbier festival. Studying under Davide Cabassi and Edda Ponti, in 2010 he graduated from the Conservatorio di Milano, then completing a master’s at the Conservatorio di Bolzano. He was a Theo Lieven Scholar at the Conservatorio Della Svizzera Italiana in Lugano, under the guidance of William Grant Naborè, becoming a Master of Advanced Studies.

“Le Tombeau de Couperin: The Baroque Ballets of Maurice Ravel”
Wednesday June 17th 2020
Speaker: Talitha MacKenzie
Description
Maurice Ravel (1875-1937) looked to Historical Dance for many of his musical compositions (waltzes, minuets, pavanes, a forlane, rigaudon and passacaille) and collaborated with several leading dancers of the day (Michel Fokine, Vaslav Nijinsky, Bronislava Nijinska, Ida Rubenstein, George Balanchine); however, little is known about the choreography of his WWI masterpiece Le Tombeau de Couperin.
In celebration of the centennial of the 1919 debut of the solo piano suite, funding from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland Athenæum Award was used to support a project that brought together Millicent Hodson & Kenneth Archer (Ballets Old & New), Karin Modigh (Nordic Baroque Dancers) and students of the RCS Keyboard and Modern Ballet departments to explore the connection between dance in the time of François Couperin and of Maurice Ravel. This Online lecture will follow the path of discoveries en route to the creation of a new ballet juxtaposing a suite by Couperin (featuring new choreography in the Baroque style) with a performance of Le Tombeau de Couperin (featuring 20th century-style choreography).
Talitha MacKenzie
Talitha MacKenzie has had a passion for French Impressionistic music since early childhood. Studying classical piano from the age of 4, she began teaching music professionally at 13 and fell in love with the work of Maurice Ravel in her mid-teens. In 1973, she was introduced to Historical Dance by Ingrid Brainard (Renaissance), Wendy Hilton (Baroque) and Daniel Nagrin (20th Century) at the American Dance Festival.
