The Best of Debussy
Claude Debussy (22 August 1862 – 25 March 1918) was a French composer. He is sometimes seen as the first Impressionist composer, although he vigorously rejected the term. He was among the most influential composers of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
Born to a family of modest means and little cultural involvement, Debussy showed enough musical talent to be admitted at the age of ten to France's leading music college, the Conservatoire de Paris. He originally studied the piano, but found his vocation in innovative composition, despite the disapproval of the Conservatoire's conservative professors. He took many years to develop his mature style, and was nearly 40 when he achieved international fame in 1902 with the only opera he completed, Pelléas et Mélisande.

Debussy: Clair de lune | Menahem Pressler, piano
Drenched in the light of the moon: Claude Debussy’s “Clair de lune” is an ode to the night sky. It’s one of the French composer’s best-known pieces and it was given an emotional interpretation on 17 October 2012 at a concert in the Salle Pleyel in Paris by piano virtuoso Menahem Pressler (1923 - 2023), who was almost 90 years old at the time.
The French composer Claude Debussy (1862 – 1918) is a representative of musical Impressionism. Debussy was fond of subject matter from nature such as sea, clouds and snow and attempted to inject these phenomena of nature with musical character, whereby a formal freedom was of particular importance to him. Claude Debussy was an individualist who wasn’t afraid to ruffle feathers. He started getting noticed in 1894 with the orchestral work “Prélude à l´...

Debussy: La mer | Bernard Haitink and the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra
Multi-award-winning conductor Bernard Haitink leads the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra in the Concertgebouw Amsterdam. They perform Claude Debussy's 'La mer, trois esquisses symphoniques pour orchestre,' known simply as 'La mer.'
Claude Debussy (1862 - 1918) wrote this composition of 'three symphonic sketches' between 1903 and 1905. Upon its premiere in Paris in October 1905, it was not well-received, provoking confusion and dismay among both audience and critics. But after performances in the United States and Britain, it was performed again in Paris in 1908, and then quickly became one of Debussy's most famous and admired orchestral works.
Along with Debussy's 'Nocturnes,' 'La mer' exemplifies musical Impressionism and serves as a transition between the Romantic and modern eras.

Claude Debussy - Golliwogg's Cakewalk (Abigail Correnti, clarinet/Sergio Camelia, guitar)

He took many years to develop his mature style, and was nearly 40 when he achieved international fame in 1902 with the only opera he completed, Pelléas et Mélisande.
Debussy's orchestral works include Prélude à l'après-midi d'un faune (1894), Nocturnes (1897–1899) and Images (1905–1912). His music was to a considerable extent a reaction against Wagner and the German musical tradition. He regarded the classical symphony as obsolete and sought an alternative in his "symphonic sketches", La mer (1903–1905). His piano works include two books of Préludes and two of Études. Throughout his career he wrote mélodies based on a wide variety of poetry, including his own. He was greatly influenced by the Symbolist poetic movement of the later 19th century. A small number of works, including the early La Damoiselle élue and the late Le Martyre de saint Sébastien have important parts for chorus. In his final years, he focused on chamber music, completing three of six planned sonatas for different combinations of instruments.
With early influences including Russian and far-eastern music, Debussy developed his own style of harmony and orchestral colouring, derided – and unsuccessfully resisted – by much of the musical establishment of the day. His works have strongly influenced a wide range of composers including Béla Bartók, Olivier Messiaen, George Benjamin, and the jazz pianist and composer Bill Evans. Debussy died from cancer at his home in Paris at the age of 55 after a composing career of a little more than 30 years.

He started getting noticed in 1894 with the orchestral work “Prélude à l´après-midi d´un faune”; the final breakthrough came with the opera “Pelléas et Mélisande” premiered in 1902.
The piece “Claire de lune” is part of the “Suite bergamasque“ composed by Claude Debussy in 1890. It consists of four movements; “Clair de lune“ is the third of these. The piano suite was first performed in 1905. Claude Debussy often drew inspiration from the poetry of Paul Verlaine – sensitive, somber descriptions of the natural world in accordance with late 19th-century tastes. “Clair de lune” was also inspired by an eponymous poem by Verlaine. This particular movement of the suite is a frequent inclusion on concert programs and is exceedingly popular – not just on stage. “Clair de lune” also features on many movie soundtracks.
The soloist Menahem Pressler was born as Max Pressler in 1923 in the German city of Magdeburg. His family is Jewish. After the Nazis came to power he fled the Holocaust in 1939 with his parents, initially emigrating to Palestine and then to the US in 1940. The other members of his family were murdered by the Nazis. In the year 1946, the young Pressler won the Debussy International Piano Competition in San Francisco, and remained in California thereafter to continue his studies. In 1955, he founded the world-famous “Beaux Arts Trio”. The ensemble went on to make more than 50 recordings. Many musicians played with the trio until it gave its final concert in 2008. Pressler has also been performing as a soloist throughout his life.
Menahem Pressler once said: "I'm still hungry for music." And he remained that way on into old age. The piano virtuoso died in London in 2023 at the age of 99.

Bernard Haitink began his conducting career with Netherlands Radio: he became chief conductor of the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic in 1957. Later he was principal conductor of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra and held this position for 27 years. Today he is patron of the Radio Philharmonic Orchestra and Honorary Conductor of the Concertgebouw Orchestra.
Bernard Haitink has also been Music Director of the Glyndebourne Festival and the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, and Chief Conductor of the London Philharmonic Orchestra, the Staatskapelle Dresden and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. He is an honorary member of the Berlin Philharmonic, the Chamber Orchestra of Europe and since 2019, the Vienna Philharmonic. He has received numerous prizes and awards, including the Gramophone Lifetime Achievement Award.

Is there any composer whose music expends more craft, on a bar-by-bar basis, than Ravel?
Well, ok, so that isn’t really a sensible or meaningful question, but it’s hard to escape the feeling when you’re actually listening to Ravel that his music is put together with a level of care and precision that no other composer quite matches. Dedicated to 6 friends who died in WWI, Le Tombeau de Couperin is the last set of solo piano works Ravel wrote, as well as the last works he wrote in any “antique” form. Le Tombeau represents a fusion of classical discipline & economy with colouristic imagination of the highest order – each of these pieces could be the subject of a longish essay, and despite my best efforts any description will bust YT’s limit, so I’ve put it in the comments.

Maurice Ravel - Le tombeau de Couperin, orchestration completed by Zoltán Kocsis (1917/1919)
Composer: Joseph Maurice Ravel (March 7, 1875 – December 28, 1937)
Orchestra: Hungarian National Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Zoltán Kocsis
00:00 I - Prélude
03:13 II - Fugue (orch. Kocsis)
06:26 III - Forlane
12:29 IV - Rigaudon
15:31 V - Menuet
20:43 VI - Toccata (orch. Kocsis)
I much prefer the original organization of the piano suite, so it is unfortunate Ravel didn't orchestrate the fugue and toccata himself. Nonetheless, Kocsis's orchestrations of these missing movements are brilliant.

[00:00] Prélude ("à la mémoire du lieutenant Jacques Charlot");
[03:08] Fugue ("à la mémoire du sous-lieutenant Jean Cruppi");
[06:20] Forlane ("à la mémoire du lieutenant Gabriel Deluc");
[12:23] Rigaudon ("à la mémoire de Pierre et Pascal Gaudin");
[15:24] Menuet ("à la mémoire de Jean Dreyfus");

► Fugue - Allegro moderato 03:04 (Dedication: second lieutenant Jean Cruppi)
► Forlane - Allegretto 06:59 (Dedication: lieutenant Gabriel Deluc)

► Menuet - Allegro moderato 15:56 (Dedication: Jean Dreyfus)
► Toccata - Vif 20:36 (Dedication: captain Joseph de Marliave)
■ About Luca Buratto:
Winner of the 2015 edition of the Honens International Piano Competition in Calgary, his playing stands out for its “fiery imagination and finesse” (Musical America). He has long been described as “a name to watch” (The Guardian) and “no ordinary virtuoso” (The Telegraph). The periodical International Piano defined his playing as “masterly”, and his highly acclaimed interpretations of the prolific British composer Thomas Adès further reveal the versatility of “an artist that is as illuminating as he is fearless” (ConcertoNet). Recent appearances include solo recitals and orchestral concerts in prestigious venues such as Wigmore Hall in London, Carnegie Hall in New York, Berlin's Konzerthaus, and the Victoria Concert Hall in Singapore, to mention but a few. At home as a soloist or performing in recitals, he has participated at festivals and residencies from the “Martha Argerich Project” of the Lugano Festival to the Swiss Verbier festival. Studying under Davide Cabassi and Edda Ponti, in 2010 he graduated from the Conservatorio di Milano, then completing a master’s at the Conservatorio di Bolzano. He was a Theo Lieven Scholar at the Conservatorio Della Svizzera Italiana in Lugano, under the guidance of William Grant Naborè, becoming a Master of Advanced Studies.

** Language: French, Pronounced: leuh tom-bow deh koop-er-an, Meaning: The tomb of Couperin. François Couperin was a famous late 17th-early 18th-century French keyboard composer and organist. In this suite of dances in 18th-century courtly style, eight couples are divided into left and right quadrilles. (A quadrille is an 18th-century dance form originating with squadrons at tournaments; it is also referred to as a square dance.) The dancers form geometric patterns — diagonals, diamonds, squares — and dance in unison as well as mimicking the movements of the opposing quadrille.

See this performance on:
July 9th (8pm), and July 12th (8pm)

In celebration of the centennial of the 1919 debut of the solo piano suite, funding from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland Athenæum Award was used to support a project that brought together Millicent Hodson & Kenneth Archer (Ballets Old & New), Karin Modigh (Nordic Baroque Dancers) and students of the RCS Keyboard and Modern Ballet departments to explore the connection between dance in the time of François Couperin and of Maurice Ravel. This Online lecture will follow the path of discoveries en route to the creation of a new ballet juxtaposing a suite by Couperin (featuring new choreography in the Baroque style) with a performance of Le Tombeau de Couperin (featuring 20th century-style choreography).
Talitha MacKenzie
Talitha MacKenzie has had a passion for French Impressionistic music since early childhood. Studying classical piano from the age of 4, she began teaching music professionally at 13 and fell in love with the work of Maurice Ravel in her mid-teens. In 1973, she was introduced to Historical Dance by Ingrid Brainard (Renaissance), Wendy Hilton (Baroque) and Daniel Nagrin (20th Century) at the American Dance Festival. While obtaining a degree in Music History/Ethnomusicology from the New England Conservatory of Music (Boston), she performed Renaissance/Baroque dance and music with Julia Sutton’s Collegium Terpsichore. Upon graduation, she taught ‘Structure & Form in Music & Movement’, at Harvard University for a short time, before moving to Scotland in 1987.
After two decades focusing on Traditional Scottish Dance & Music, recording four internationally acclaimed albums, she returned to a broader range of Historical Dance in 2008, when she took a post as lecturer at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland (Glasgow). Since 2014, she has been instrumental in the resuscitation of Regency quadrilles published by Nathaniel Gow, has organised three Edinburgh Assembly Rooms Bicentennial Balls and teaches Quadrille Classes at Out of the Blue Drill Hall and the Institut Français d’Écosse in Edinburgh.
In 2019, she founded the Historical Dance & Music group Rossignol and is also a longtime member of the Friday Night Branslers, hosted by Chris Elmes & Cait Webb of Gaita. She is a committee member of the Historical Dance Society, the Traditional Dance Forum of Scotland, and Chairs the Steering Committee of the Edinburgh Quadrille Society.
