The Best of Debussy
Claude Debussy (22 August 1862 – 25 March 1918) was a French composer. He is sometimes seen as the first Impressionist composer, although he vigorously rejected the term. He was among the most influential composers of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
Born to a family of modest means and little cultural involvement, Debussy showed enough musical talent to be admitted at the age of ten to France's leading music college, the Conservatoire de Paris. He originally studied the piano, but found his vocation in innovative composition, despite the disapproval of the Conservatoire's conservative professors. He took many years to develop his mature style, and was nearly 40 when he achieved international fame in 1902 with the only opera he completed, Pelléas et Mélisande.

Debussy: Clair de lune | Menahem Pressler, piano
Drenched in the light of the moon: Claude Debussy’s “Clair de lune” is an ode to the night sky. It’s one of the French composer’s best-known pieces and it was given an emotional interpretation on 17 October 2012 at a concert in the Salle Pleyel in Paris by piano virtuoso Menahem Pressler (1923 - 2023), who was almost 90 years old at the time.
The French composer Claude Debussy (1862 – 1918) is a representative of musical Impressionism. Debussy was fond of subject matter from nature such as sea, clouds and snow and attempted to inject these phenomena of nature with musical character, whereby a formal freedom was of particular importance to him. Claude Debussy was an individualist who wasn’t afraid to ruffle feathers. He started getting noticed in 1894 with the orchestral work “Prélude à l´...

Debussy: La mer | Bernard Haitink and the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra
Multi-award-winning conductor Bernard Haitink leads the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra in the Concertgebouw Amsterdam. They perform Claude Debussy's 'La mer, trois esquisses symphoniques pour orchestre,' known simply as 'La mer.'
Claude Debussy (1862 - 1918) wrote this composition of 'three symphonic sketches' between 1903 and 1905. Upon its premiere in Paris in October 1905, it was not well-received, provoking confusion and dismay among both audience and critics. But after performances in the United States and Britain, it was performed again in Paris in 1908, and then quickly became one of Debussy's most famous and admired orchestral works.
Along with Debussy's 'Nocturnes,' 'La mer' exemplifies musical Impressionism and serves as a transition between the Romantic and modern eras.

Claude Debussy - Golliwogg's Cakewalk (Abigail Correnti, clarinet/Sergio Camelia, guitar)

He took many years to develop his mature style, and was nearly 40 when he achieved international fame in 1902 with the only opera he completed, Pelléas et Mélisande.
Debussy's orchestral works include Prélude à l'après-midi d'un faune (1894), Nocturnes (1897–1899) and Images (1905–1912). His music was to a considerable extent a reaction against Wagner and the German musical tradition. He regarded the classical symphony as obsolete and sought an alternative in his "symphonic sketches", La mer (1903–1905). His piano works include two books of Préludes and two of Études. Throughout his career he wrote mélodies based on a wide variety of poetry, including his own. He was greatly influenced by the Symbolist poetic movement of the later 19th century. A small number of works, including the early La Damoiselle élue and the late Le Martyre de saint Sébastien have important parts for chorus. In his final years, he focused on chamber music, completing three of six planned sonatas for different combinations of instruments.
With early influences including Russian and far-eastern music, Debussy developed his own style of harmony and orchestral colouring, derided – and unsuccessfully resisted – by much of the musical establishment of the day. His works have strongly influenced a wide range of composers including Béla Bartók, Olivier Messiaen, George Benjamin, and the jazz pianist and composer Bill Evans. Debussy died from cancer at his home in Paris at the age of 55 after a composing career of a little more than 30 years.

He started getting noticed in 1894 with the orchestral work “Prélude à l´après-midi d´un faune”; the final breakthrough came with the opera “Pelléas et Mélisande” premiered in 1902.
The piece “Claire de lune” is part of the “Suite bergamasque“ composed by Claude Debussy in 1890. It consists of four movements; “Clair de lune“ is the third of these. The piano suite was first performed in 1905. Claude Debussy often drew inspiration from the poetry of Paul Verlaine – sensitive, somber descriptions of the natural world in accordance with late 19th-century tastes. “Clair de lune” was also inspired by an eponymous poem by Verlaine. This particular movement of the suite is a frequent inclusion on concert programs and is exceedingly popular – not just on stage. “Clair de lune” also features on many movie soundtracks.
The soloist Menahem Pressler was born as Max Pressler in 1923 in the German city of Magdeburg. His family is Jewish. After the Nazis came to power he fled the Holocaust in 1939 with his parents, initially emigrating to Palestine and then to the US in 1940. The other members of his family were murdered by the Nazis. In the year 1946, the young Pressler won the Debussy International Piano Competition in San Francisco, and remained in California thereafter to continue his studies. In 1955, he founded the world-famous “Beaux Arts Trio”. The ensemble went on to make more than 50 recordings. Many musicians played with the trio until it gave its final concert in 2008. Pressler has also been performing as a soloist throughout his life.
Menahem Pressler once said: "I'm still hungry for music." And he remained that way on into old age. The piano virtuoso died in London in 2023 at the age of 99.

Bernard Haitink began his conducting career with Netherlands Radio: he became chief conductor of the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic in 1957. Later he was principal conductor of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra and held this position for 27 years. Today he is patron of the Radio Philharmonic Orchestra and Honorary Conductor of the Concertgebouw Orchestra.
Bernard Haitink has also been Music Director of the Glyndebourne Festival and the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, and Chief Conductor of the London Philharmonic Orchestra, the Staatskapelle Dresden and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. He is an honorary member of the Berlin Philharmonic, the Chamber Orchestra of Europe and since 2019, the Vienna Philharmonic. He has received numerous prizes and awards, including the Gramophone Lifetime Achievement Award.

Ravel: Gaspard de la Nuit (Lortie, Grosvenor)
Two dazzling performances of a suite whose absurd technical demands are easily matched by the precision of its construction and the dazzling range of textures it encompasses. Both performances here have been met with critical acclaim, but are otherwise very different. Lortie’s playing is sumptuous and limpid; there is a microscopic attention to detail, and you can hear even the tiniest musical gestures with startling clarity. Grosvenor's performance, on the other hand, seems to take seriously Ravel's instruction that when it came to Gaspard, one should not interpret – just play: his performance features precipitous accelerandi [38:10], striking colours [see the sudden change in texture at 25:44], wafer-thin pianissimos [26:31], and sudden reels of notes like jagged stabs of light in the mu...

Ravel - Gaspard de la Nuit, No. 3, "Scarbo" Sheet Music + Audio
Maurice Ravel - "Scarbo," from Gaspard de la Nuit, 1908-1909.
Performed by Jean-Yves Thibaudet.
Gaspard de la nuit is a three-"poem" suite, each work based on a poem by Aloysius Bertrand. This piece, "Scarbo," is a devilishly difficult piece depicting a ghost of a dwarf dancing in the dark, frightening all who see him. The piece was written to rival Balakirev's "Islamey" in terms of difficulty. "Scarbo" combines the pristine elegance and beauty of "Ondine" with the dark morbidity of "Le Gibet" to bring the suite to a unified close. One of Ravel's most well-known piano pieces, Gaspard de la Nuit will continue to live on in the elite solo piano repertoire.
Oh! How often I have heard and seen him, Scarbo, when at midnight the moon shines in the sky like a silver shield on a blue banner str...

Andrei Gavrilov - Ravel, Gaspard de la nuit : Scarbo
That was in the summer of 2004 when Mr Gavrilov played a big tour with several Rachmaninov concertos around Europe. In Italy he played number 3 D minor.
After the concert in San Remo he came to Vicenza and found out that the conductor could not perform due to illness.
The organisers begged Andrei to play a recital,he replayed it is totally impossible because he was in a month long tour with different orchestras and only Rachmaninov concertos but after he saw how sad was the people he decided to play. He prepared the program 40 minutes before the concert and it was very hard indeed..
Thanks to Puchjok for the concession.

Grosvenor's performance, on the other hand, seems to take seriously Ravel's instruction that when it came to Gaspard, one should not interpret – just play: his performance features precipitous accelerandi [38:10], striking colours [see the sudden change in texture at 25:44], wafer-thin pianissimos [26:31], and sudden reels of notes like jagged stabs of light in the murk. The level of virtuosity and control needed to pull off the sort of hyper-precise effects Grosvenor elicits from the piano is quite hard to imagine.
Ravel's Gaspard de la Nuit has three movements, each based on an image drawn from a poem by Aloysius Bertrand. (As an aside, it is possible to analyse Gaspard as a Sonata: Ondine has a sonata-like two-theme structure, and the fast-slow-fast arrangement of the movements is fairly typical for a Sonata.) The first movement, Ondine, depicts a water demon trying to seduce the observer into her lake. The technical demands here include: quiet but rapid semi-chordal figuration, the passing of legato melody between hands, and maintaining the independence of the hands (especially in the climax: 3:54). The second, Le Gibet, depicts a man hanging from the gallows, silhouetted against a red sunset, while church bells toll in the distance (the B-flat ostinato in 3-3-2 syncopated rhythm running through the movement.) The third, Scarbo, depicts the nighttime mischief of a goblin lurking in the shadows. This last movement is notoriously difficult (featuring repeated notes, hand-crossing, large leaps, interlocking chordal runs, rapid figuration), and contains two colossal, intricate climaxes.
Lortie:
00:00 – Ondine
06:40 – Le Gibet
13:20 – Scarbo
Grosvenor:
22:14 – Ondine
28:41 – Le Gibet (Grosvenor accents the ostinato to so that the second beat becomes a near-inaudible echo of the first.)
34:10 -- Scarbo (Grosvenor's attacks here are among the sharpest I've heard: see 37:31and so on.)

Oh! How often I have heard and seen him, Scarbo, when at midnight the moon shines in the sky like a silver shield on a blue banner strewn with golden bees!
How often I have heard his laughter booming in the shadow of my alcove and the grating of his nails on the silk curtain of my bed!
How often I have seen him come down from the ceiling, pirouetting on one foot and rolling through the room like the spindle fallen from the distaff of a witch.
Did I then believe he vanished? The dwarf would grow bigger between the moon and me like the bell tower of a gothic cathedral, a little golden bell swinging on his pointed cap!
But soon his body would turn blue, diaphanous like the wax of a taper, his face would grow pale like the wax of a candle stub—and suddenly he would fade away.
