Haydn: The Creation | Nederlands Kamerkoor, Concerto D’Amsterdam & Klaas Stock (2009)
Classical oratorio with cosmic views: Die Schöpfung (The Creation) by Joseph Haydn, here with the Netherlands Chamber Choir (Nederlands Kamerkoor) and the Concerto D’Amsterdam under the baton of Klaas Stok. The performance took place in the Concertgebouw Amsterdam, the Netherlands, on May 21, 2009. The special thing about this video is that the concert footage is combined with images from the Hubble telescope and paintings from Haydn’s time. Thus Haydn’s oratorio about the creation of the world becomes a fascinating concert experience with cosmic views.

Franz Joseph Haydn (31 March 1732 – 31 May 1809) was an Austrian composer of the Classical period. He was instrumental in the development of chamber music such as the string quartet and piano trio. His contributions to musical form have led him to be called "Father of the Symphony" and "Father of the String Quartet".
Haydn spent much of his career as a court musician for the wealthy Esterházy family at their Eszterháza Castle. Until the later part of his life, this isolated him from other composers and trends in music so that he was, as he put it, "forced to become original". Yet his music circulated widely, and for much of his career he was the most celebrated composer in Europe.
He was a friend and mentor of Mozart, a tutor of Beethoven, and the elder brother of composer Michael Haydn.

It is mere legend that Joseph Haydn (1732 - 1809) was inspired to write his oratorio The Creation (Hob. XXI:2) while looking through a telescope at the starry night sky. In fact, Haydn only took a look at the telescope of the musician and astronomer William Herschel (1738 - 1822) during one of his trips to England, but did not meet Herschel himself, let alone was he allowed to put his eye to the magnificent telescope to peer out into space.
Nevertheless, his travels to England inspired him to compose The Creation: In England Haydn had heard the great oratorios of George Frideric Handel (1685 - 1759) and brought back with him the text poetry of a certain “Lidley” (nothing further is known about this author), in which the biblical story of creation and paradise (Genesis 1 & 2) and John Milton’s (1608 - 1674) epic poem Paradise Lost were combined into an oratorio text. Gottfried van Swieten translated this text into German for Haydn. Haydn wrote The Creation between 1796 and 1798, and is even said to have afterwards described the compositional work as a religious experience.
Although private previews of The Creation in April 1798 had already been received with enthusiasm, Haydn made some corrections to the oratorio. The public premiere then took place in March 1799 at the old Burgtheater in Vienna and was a great success. To this day, Haydn’s The Creation is a beloved classic that frequently appears on concert programs.
The three-part oratorio offers plenty of special features: Haydn had van Swieten’s German text retranslated into English and published the score of The Creation in two languages. It is considered the first bilingual composition ever. Haydn has the three archangels Gabriel (soprano), Uriel (tenor) and Raphael (baritones) narrate and at the same time comment on the material of the divine creation of the world in six days, which is significant in religious and cultural history. The six-day work is not completed by God’s seventh day of rest, as in the biblical template; rather, on the seventh day Haydn celebrates the happy coexistence of Adam and Eve in paradise before the Fall.
One of the musical highlights of The Creation is the prelude, in which the idea of a primordial chaos is set to music. Haydn, whose compositions can actually be considered prime examples of “orderly” form, has ingeniously set a cosmic chaos to music in this introduction – and thus in turn put it into musical form. The most outstanding and famous passage in the entire oratorio, however, is that of the creation of light (07:57). At the words “und es ward Licht” (and there was light), a radiant C major bursts forth, like an elemental sound event, which has captivated every listener of The Creation to this day. If you listen to the abruptly sounding C major chord, it seems as if Haydn, while composing, had glimpsed the first spark of the big bang in the depths of space.
Part I
00:00 The Representation of Chaos
09:01 Now vanish before the holy beams
12:33 And God made the firmament
14:31 The marv’lous work beholds amaz’d
16:34 And God said: Let the waters
17:18 Rolling in foaming billows
20:56 And God said: Let the earth bring forth grass
21:27 With verdure clad the fields appear
26:25 And the heavenly host proclaimed the third day
26:37 Awake the harp
28:39 And God said: Let there be lights
29:16 In splendor bright
32:08 The heavens are telling the glory of God
Part II
36:01 And God said: Let the waters bring
36:34 On mighty pens
43:38 And God created great whales
45:40 And the angels struck
46:04 Most beautiful appear
50:13 The Lord is great
52:21 And God said: Let the earth bring forth
52:49 Strait opening her fertile womb
56:14 Now heav’n in fullest glory shone
59:26 And God created man
1:00:09 In native worth and honour
1:03:27 And God saw ev’ry thing
1:03:54 Achieved is the glorious work
1:05:19 On thee each living soul awaits
1:09:48 Achieved is the glorious work
Part III
1:12:28 In rosy mantle appears
1:16:19 By thee with bliss
1:25:26 Our duty we performed now
1:27:47 Graceful consort
1:35:54 O happy pair
1:36:17 Sing the Lord ye voices all

HAYDN: THREE STRING QUARTETS FROM OP. 33
In April 1782 Joseph Haydn sent his six string quartets op. 33 to Artaria; his publisher in Vienna; with a letter emphasizing the originality of the works: “They are in a completely new and unique style; especially since the last [quartets] that I wrote were ten years ago.” The preceding quartets (opus 20) did in fact date back to 1772. And although he wrote some thirty quartets between 1766 and 1772; he hadn’t composed anything in this genre “since ten years ago”.
A New Haydn
The First String Quartet in B Minor is marked from the beginning by an exceptional force due to its striking theme; headstrong (the four repeated notes) and yet a bit mysterious despite emphatic interjections and sharply marked contrasts between lyric and rhythmic cells. The development centers around the beginning of the opening theme and demonstrates particularly supple and inventive writing.
This resolute Allegro moderato is followed by a Scherzo in the same style with very marked rhythms; the Trio develops into a kind of question and answer game. In spite of its expressive melody; the following Andante continues the rhythmic verve encountered until this point: even in the dialogue/opposition between the first violin and the cello one can sense an underlying accentuation that becomes more prominent in the finale with vigorous pulses that seem to compensate for the chromatic descending passage or the brief pauses before the coda.
Everything here is filled with an indomitable force and energy. This is indeed a new Haydn.

The Best of Debussy
Claude Debussy (22 August 1862 – 25 March 1918) was a French composer. He is sometimes seen as the first Impressionist composer, although he vigorously rejected the term. He was among the most influential composers of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
Born to a family of modest means and little cultural involvement, Debussy showed enough musical talent to be admitted at the age of ten to France's leading music college, the Conservatoire de Paris. He originally studied the piano, but found his vocation in innovative composition, despite the disapproval of the Conservatoire's conservative professors. He took many years to develop his mature style, and was nearly 40 when he achieved international fame in 1902 with the only opera he completed, Pelléas et Mélisande.

Pascal Rogé — “Clair de Lune”, Claude Debussy
Steinway Artist Pascal Rogé, a master of French piano repertoire, performs Debussy‘s immortal “Clair de Lune” at New York City’s Steinway Hall. The celebrated movement from Debussy‘s “Suite Bergamasque” was originally titled “Promenade sentimental”; Debussy‘s suite was inspired by the poetry of Paul Verlaine.

Debussy: Clair de lune | Menahem Pressler, piano
Drenched in the light of the moon: Claude Debussy’s “Clair de lune” is an ode to the night sky. It’s one of the French composer’s best-known pieces and it was given an emotional interpretation on 17 October 2012 at a concert in the Salle Pleyel in Paris by piano virtuoso Menahem Pressler (1923 - 2023), who was almost 90 years old at the time.
The French composer Claude Debussy (1862 – 1918) is a representative of musical Impressionism. Debussy was fond of subject matter from nature such as sea, clouds and snow and attempted to inject these phenomena of nature with musical character, whereby a formal freedom was of particular importance to him. Claude Debussy was an individualist who wasn’t afraid to ruffle feathers. He started getting noticed in 1894 with the orchestral work “Prélude à l´...

Debussy: La mer | Bernard Haitink and the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra
Multi-award-winning conductor Bernard Haitink leads the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra in the Concertgebouw Amsterdam. They perform Claude Debussy's 'La mer, trois esquisses symphoniques pour orchestre,' known simply as 'La mer.'
Claude Debussy (1862 - 1918) wrote this composition of 'three symphonic sketches' between 1903 and 1905. Upon its premiere in Paris in October 1905, it was not well-received, provoking confusion and dismay among both audience and critics. But after performances in the United States and Britain, it was performed again in Paris in 1908, and then quickly became one of Debussy's most famous and admired orchestral works.
Along with Debussy's 'Nocturnes,' 'La mer' exemplifies musical Impressionism and serves as a transition between the Romantic and modern eras.

Debussy's orchestral works include Prélude à l'après-midi d'un faune (1894), Nocturnes (1897–1899) and Images (1905–1912). His music was to a considerable extent a reaction against Wagner and the German musical tradition. He regarded the classical symphony as obsolete and sought an alternative in his "symphonic sketches", La mer (1903–1905). His piano works include two books of Préludes and two of Études. Throughout his career he wrote mélodies based on a wide variety of poetry, including his own. He was greatly influenced by the Symbolist poetic movement of the later 19th century. A small number of works, including the early La Damoiselle élue and the late Le Martyre de saint Sébastien have important parts for chorus. In his final years, he focused on chamber music, completing three of six planned sonatas for different combinations of instruments.
With early influences including Russian and far-eastern music, Debussy developed his own style of harmony and orchestral colouring, derided – and unsuccessfully resisted – by much of the musical establishment of the day. His works have strongly influenced a wide range of composers including Béla Bartók, Olivier Messiaen, George Benjamin, and the jazz pianist and composer Bill Evans. Debussy died from cancer at his home in Paris at the age of 55 after a composing career of a little more than 30 years.

His works have strongly influenced a wide range of composers including Béla Bartók, Olivier Messiaen, George Benjamin, and the jazz pianist and composer Bill Evans. Debussy died from cancer at his home in Paris at the age of 55 after a composing career of a little more than 30 years.

He started getting noticed in 1894 with the orchestral work “Prélude à l´après-midi d´un faune”; the final breakthrough came with the opera “Pelléas et Mélisande” premiered in 1902.
The piece “Claire de lune” is part of the “Suite bergamasque“ composed by Claude Debussy in 1890. It consists of four movements; “Clair de lune“ is the third of these. The piano suite was first performed in 1905. Claude Debussy often drew inspiration from the poetry of Paul Verlaine – sensitive, somber descriptions of the natural world in accordance with late 19th-century tastes. “Clair de lune” was also inspired by an eponymous poem by Verlaine. This particular movement of the suite is a frequent inclusion on concert programs and is exceedingly popular – not just on stage. “Clair de lune” also features on many movie soundtracks.
The soloist Menahem Pressler was born as Max Pressler in 1923 in the German city of Magdeburg. His family is Jewish. After the Nazis came to power he fled the Holocaust in 1939 with his parents, initially emigrating to Palestine and then to the US in 1940. The other members of his family were murdered by the Nazis. In the year 1946, the young Pressler won the Debussy International Piano Competition in San Francisco, and remained in California thereafter to continue his studies. In 1955, he founded the world-famous “Beaux Arts Trio”. The ensemble went on to make more than 50 recordings. Many musicians played with the trio until it gave its final concert in 2008. Pressler has also been performing as a soloist throughout his life.
Menahem Pressler once said: "I'm still hungry for music." And he remained that way on into old age. The piano virtuoso died in London in 2023 at the age of 99.

Bernard Haitink began his conducting career with Netherlands Radio: he became chief conductor of the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic in 1957. Later he was principal conductor of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra and held this position for 27 years. Today he is patron of the Radio Philharmonic Orchestra and Honorary Conductor of the Concertgebouw Orchestra.
Bernard Haitink has also been Music Director of the Glyndebourne Festival and the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, and Chief Conductor of the London Philharmonic Orchestra, the Staatskapelle Dresden and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. He is an honorary member of the Berlin Philharmonic, the Chamber Orchestra of Europe and since 2019, the Vienna Philharmonic. He has received numerous prizes and awards, including the Gramophone Lifetime Achievement Award.
