Worshipping nature with the Altai - BBC News
BBC's Pop Up team is in Russia. For the past month, they've been travelling across the country filming stories suggested by viewers on social media and by Russians they've come across on their travels. The Altai people - who live in the Altai Republic in southern Siberia - are one of the hundreds of ethnic groups in Russia. They have been part of the region for 300 years. BBC Pop Up went to visit an Altai woman, Baba Tasya, to talk about her work and the Altai relationship with nature. This story was suggested through the #bbcpopup hashtag on Twitter.

How people live in Altai Mountains. Summer in Altai. Village everyday life. Russia
The Altai Mountains, also spelled Altay Mountains, are a mountain range in Central and East Asia, where Russia, China, Mongolia and Kazakhstan converge. The region is inhabited by a sparse but ethnically diverse population, including Russians, Kazakhs, Altais and Mongols, though predominantly represented by indigenous ethnic minorities of semi-nomadic stock. The local economy is based on bovine, sheep, horse husbandry, hunting, agriculture, forestry, and mining. The controversial Altaic language family takes its name from this mountain range.
We are interested in learning how our ancestors lived, to study their traditions and to master ancient crafts and meals.

1. The Altai Republic is a federal subject (a republic) of Russia. It is geographically located in the West Siberia region of Asian Russia, and is part of the Siberian Federal District. The Altai Republic covers an area of 92,600 square kilometers and has a population of 206,168, the least-populous republic of Russia and federal subject in Siberia.
2. Since the annexation of the entire Altan Nuur Uriankhai into Russia in 1864-1867, the Altaians no longer enjoyed autonomy until June 1, 1922, with the creation of Oyrot Autonomous Oblast (Ойро́тская автоно́мная о́бласть), part of Altai Krai. During the Russian Civil War, the Confederated Republic of Altai was established, and declared as the first step to rebuilding Genghis Khan's Mongol Empire.
3. Gorno-Altaysk is the capital and the largest town of the Altai Republic. The history of the city dates back to the beginning of the XIX century, then on the place of modern Gorno-Altaisk there was a small Teleut settlement. In 1824, the first Russian settlers moved here from Biysk and founded the village of Ulala. Its further development was closely connected with the work of the Altai spiritual mission. In 1831, the main camp begins work in Ulal, where missionaries and clergymen gather.
4. Altay Region is a mountainous area in central Asia where Mongolia, Russia, Kazakhstan and China all come together. Situated between the Gobi Desert and the Siberian Plain, it is regarded as the homeland of the of the Mongolians, Turks, Koreans, Hungarians and Parzyrks. Ural-Altaic languages are named after the region. Ancient petroglyphs found in the area are believed to have been made the ancestors of the Altay.
5. The Altai Republic is situated in the Altai Mountains in the very center of Asia at the junction of the Siberian taiga, the steppes of Kazakhstan and the semi-deserts of Mongolia. The Altay region is one of the wildest and most interesting parts of southern Russia. It is a varied region with forest, steppes, wild river, lakes, deserts, snow capped mountain and abundant wildlife.
6. There are some outstanding vistas throughout the Altai region, but one of the best views comes from traversing the Katu-Yaryk pass. At 1,188m above sea level, it is one of the scariest high mountain passes in the world due to its loose gravel terrain, narrow roads and lack of barriers. If you’re brave enough to navigate the side of this cliff, you’ll be welcomed by exquisite views from the Chulyshman valley.
7. The Karakol valley is traditionally though to be a sacred place to the indigenous groups of the area and is the site various ancient burials. These burial sites, as well as the surrounding rock faces are also adorned with petroglyphs, giving the site a spiritual and cultural significance which persists in the mentality of locals today. About 5 thousand Petroglyphs can also be seen on 10km of the bank of the Chuya river, depicting images of people and animals on rock face.

Forensic DNA Profiling, Part I
More info and downloads: https://dnalc.cshl.edu/resources/dnalc-live/
Although the DNA from different individuals is more alike than different, there are many regions of human chromosomes that exhibit a great deal of diversity. Such variable sequences are termed “polymorphic” (meaning many forms) and provide the basis for forensic identification. This experiment uses gel electrophoresis and a DNA chip to examine a highly variable locus within the human genome, like the ones used by the FBI for DNA fingerprinting. This locus, D1S80, contains a variable number of tandem repeats, which can be used to build an individual's unique DNA profile. In this first part of the experiment, join DNALC educator Jeffry Petracca as he demonstrates how to extract and purify DNA from cheek cells using saline ...

DNA fingerprinting enables a scientist to compare the DNA from two biological samples, such as a blood stain and a suspect's blood.
A restriction enzyme is added to the samples to be compared.
The enzyme cuts the DNA into smaller fragments.
The DNA fragments are placed on an electrophoretic gel.
When an electric current is applied to the gel, the DNA fragments migrate through the gel toward the positively charged pole.
The smaller the fragment, the faster it will migrate.
After a set time, researchers identify fragments of differe...

What is DNA fingerprinting or DNA profiling?
Leicester University geneticist Alec Jeffreys developed a technique called DNA fingerprinting in 1985. It allows DNA samples from different people to be compared to look for similarities and differences. It is useful for solving crimes and can also confirm if people are related to each other, like in paternity testing. Any two people in the world have 99.9% of their DNA the same, so this process analyses the differences in the remaining 0.1%.
This modern technology is called DNA profiling.

The Missouri Supreme Court scheduled Marcellus Williams to be executed on Sept. 24, 2024 at 6 p.m. for a 1998 murder — despite DNA evidence supporting his innocence.
After the news broke, attorneys for Marcellus released a statement:
“The St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney has asserted that he has clear and convincing evidence that Marcellus Williams is innocent. It is alarming that an execution date has been set in spite of this. To date, no court has ever reviewed the DNA evidence proving Mr. Williams was not the individual who wielded the murder weapon and committed this crime. Yet, the State successfully so...

A2 Biology - DNA profiling (OCR A Chapter 21.1)
DNA profiling is a technique where we can use to identify an individual based on their unique DNA. People all have different number of repeats in their satellite DNA, so therefore can generate a different DNA profile. It is commonly used in forensics and paternity testing, where we compare several individuals' DNA profile to identify the person we are looking for. In this video I will explain the principles behind DNA profiling and the detailed process of it.

Yet, the State successfully sought an execution date, highlighting the system’s emphasis on finality over innocence. That is not justice. We will continue to fight for Mr. Williams’ exoneration and seek a hearing on the prosecutor’s motion to vacate.”
For the past 24 years, Marcellus has been on death row for a murder that DNA evidence proves someone else committed.
We have less than 112 days to stop the execution of an innocent person. Here’s how you can help:
1. Sign the petition to stop Mr. Williams’ execution: https://innocenceproject.org/petitions/stop-the-execution-of-marcellus-williams-an-innocent-man/
