According to the Constitution, the Russian Federation is divided into 85federal subjects (constituent units), 22of which are republics. Most of the republics represent areas of non-Russian ethnicity, although there are several republics with Russian majority. The indigenous ethnic group of a republic that gives it its name is referred to as the "titular nationality". Due to decades (in some cases centuries) of internal migration inside Russia, each nationality is not necessarily a majority of a republic's population.
Constitutional status
Republics differ from other federal subjects of Russia in that they have the right to establish their own official language and have their own constitution. Other federal subjects, such as krais (territories) and oblasts (provinces), are not explicitly given this right. The chief executives of many republics used to have the title of president, but in 2010 an amendment to the federal law was adopted that reserves such title exclusively for the head of the Russian state.
Russia-1 (Russian:Россия-1) is a state-owned Russiantelevision channel founded in 1991. It belongs to the All-Russia State Television and Radio Company (VGTRK). Russia Channel was previously known as RTR (Russian:РТР). Russia-1 has the second largest audience in Russian television. In a typical week, it is viewed by 75% of urban Russians, compared to 83% for the leading channel, Channel One. The two channels are similar in their politics, and they compete directly in entertainment. Russia-1 has many regional variations and broadcasts in many languages.
History
Soviet period
Russia-1 had started in 1965 as Program 3 in the Soviet Union and moved to Channel 2 in 1967 when a new channel, Program 4 (now known as NTV), was officially launched and the Moscow Program, which started in 1956, was transferred to Channel 3. From the very start, it only hosted programs produced by the Ministry of Education of the Soviet Union, as well as children's programming, in monochrome. The move to a new channel frequency resulted in it being renamed Program 2 and becoming the second home of the national newscast Vremya since 1968.
The Arktika class is a Russian (former Soviet) class of nuclear-powered icebreakers; they are the largest and most powerful icebreakers ever constructed. Ships of the Arktika class are owned by the federal government, but were operated by the Murmansk Shipping Company (MSCO) until 2008, when they were transferred to the fully government-owned operator Atomflot. Of the ten civilian nuclear-powered vessels built by Russia (and the Soviet Union), six have been of this type. They are used for escorting merchant ships in the Arctic Ocean north of Siberia as well as for scientific and recreational expeditions to the Arctic.
History
On July 3, 1971, construction began on a conceptual design of a larger nuclear icebreaker, dubbed Arktika, in the Baltic Shipyard in then Leningrad. Four years later, on December 17, 1975, Moscow and Leningrad received radio messages informing them that sea trials had been completed successfully. The newest and largest nuclear icebreaker at the time was ready for the Arctic.

Russian Federation Explained
Russia is the largest country in the world. To help run its vast lands it requires a complicated set of Federal Subjects that include Oblasts, Krais, Republics, Federal Cities, Autonomous Okrugs, and an Autonomous Oblast.

6 Soviet Republics That Didn't Survive ☭
The USSR, or the Soviet Union, was a union of so-called "Soviet republics", or SSRs. You can probably name only 15 of them, now independent states. But the history knew more Soviet and Russian republics that did not survive, including:
Karelo-Finnish SSR (existed in 1940-1956), Bukharan and Khorezm SSRs (1923-1924), Transcaucasian SFSR (1922-1936), Tuvan AO-ASSR (1944-1991), Volga German ASSR (1923-1941).

The difference between Oblasts and Krais is just a historic one where Krais were once the frontiers of Russia. The federal cities are like oblasts but they only have 1 city in them.
The jewish autonomous oblast is perhaps the weirdest federal subject of Russia, since less than 1% of its population is jewish and its existence is a leftover from the soviet era.

Hey! I am Pierre-Christian Brochet. I am French and for 25 years I have been crossing that huge country called Russia. What thrills me the most is the richness and variety of the cultures which are spread across the territory. That’s what I’m going to tell you about in very short films that portray one of the many faces of Russia’s cultures.
Today I will tell you about the Tuva Republic. The harmony between nature and culture is what touches me the most in Tuva. Their customs and traditions: Khuresh, the throat singing, horse racings, and everywhere these sacred natural places covered with multi-colored pieces of fabric all of this gives a feeling of spirituality.
Spirits seem to be still here, everywhere, even in the endless steppe with these remnants of tumulus.
Meeting with the culture of Tuva, it is the feeling of complete change of horizons.

(SSR stands for "Soviet socialist republic", A in ASSR - "autonomous", F in SFSR - "federative")

A lot of us often think of Russia as somehow being one big, monolithic, all-Slavic country, but that isn't necessarily the case, as Russia is home to numerous different ethnic republics that may or may not be impossible to explain without starting a flame war.

Howdy Madlads! Today's video talks all about the different Republics and Autonomous Okrugs (and oblast) of the Russian Federation. I talk about the people that live in these ethnic minority regions, and how exactly their regional governments work.
I hope you enjoy, please like and subscribe, and also share this video with all your friends. If you help me reach 1,000 subscribers, I can make even better content, so let's reach that goal!

Russia is the largest country in the world. To help run its vast lands it requires a complicated set of Federal Subjects that include Oblasts, Krais, Republics, Federal Cities, Autonomous Okrugs, and an Autonomous Oblast.
These Federal Subjects of Russia are not all the same, and since Russia is an asymmetric federation, some of the subjects have more powers than others.
The federal subjects of Russia explained:
Oblasts, Krais, and Federal Cities are average Federal subjects, having the right to their own legislatures, while Republics,
Autonomous Okrugs, and the Autonomous Oblast are meant to provide additional rights to Russia’s minorities.
Republics get their own constitutions and official language status, while the Autonomous Okrugs and Oblast get some language rights. Additionally Autonomous Okrugs can, but not always, be divisions of other federal subjects.
Kaliningrad Oblast is an exclave of Russia, completely detached from the rest. You can learn why Russia and other countries have exclaves in this video:

The Republic of Karelia is one of the 22 republic nations in Russia. A Finnish people that are the descendants of the Huns. Their language also "Hun"garian in origin. Gaining independence at the collapse of the Russian Empire in 1917, only to be taken over by the Soviets 23 years later. See how people lived in 18th and 19th century Russia til today's Russian Federation.
In the 1920s the Soviet government decided to create the Jewish Autonomous Oblast in the Russian Far East where its Jewish people had to live. Its capital became Birobidzhan. Was this a new Jewish homeland or a place of exile?
