🇲🇳 The Xianbei and Khitans: History of Mongolia
The Xianbei and Khitans were nomadic proto-Mongolic peoples that inhabited Mongolia, Manchuria, Northern China, and Central Asia in ancient and medieval times.
The Xianbei and Khitans were powerful nomadic warriors who wreaked havoc in Mongolia and Northern China following the collapse of the Han Dynasty. However, most of them lost their cultural integrity due to Sinicization. The Khitans, the last surviving branch of these proto-Mongols, built a nomadic empire that became a model for the related and much more successful Mongol Empire.

The Xianbei were largely subordinate to larger nomadic powers and the Han dynasty until they gained prominence in 87 AD by killing the Xiongnu chanyu Youliu. Exploring the Real Mulan’s Non-Chinese Origin
There isn't any evidence that Mulan is based on a real person. But the Mulan, as imagined in the original source material, Ballad of Mulan most likely has Xianbei origin.

Ancient Chinese Historian Describes The Xiongnu // Before The Mongols // Book of Han (111 AD)
A thousand years before the Mongols, China had to build the world's longest wall to defend against incursions from a truly ancient enemy: The Xiongnu. Here we have an extract from the Book Of Han that describes their customs and origins - a people amongst whom "the strong and robust were held in esteem, while the old and feeble were treated with contempt."
