The classification system of the types of inhabited localities in Russia, the former Soviet Union, and some other post-Soviet states has certain peculiarities compared to the classification systems in other countries.
Modern classification in Russia
During the Soviet time, each of the republics of the Soviet Union, including the Russian SFSR, had its own legislative documents dealing with classification of inhabited localities. After the dissolution of the Soviet Union, the task of developing and maintaining such classification in Russia was delegated to the federal subjects. While currently there are certain peculiarities to classifications used in many federal subjects, they are all still largely based on the system used in the RSFSR. In all federal subjects, the inhabited localities are classified into two major categories: urban and rural. Further divisions of these categories vary slightly from one federal subject to another, but they all follow common trends described below.
Russia-1 (Russian:Россия-1) is a state-owned Russiantelevision channel founded in 1991. It belongs to the All-Russia State Television and Radio Company (VGTRK). Russia Channel was previously known as RTR (Russian:РТР). Russia-1 has the second largest audience in Russian television. In a typical week, it is viewed by 75% of urban Russians, compared to 83% for the leading channel, Channel One. The two channels are similar in their politics, and they compete directly in entertainment. Russia-1 has many regional variations and broadcasts in many languages.
History
Soviet period
Russia-1 had started in 1965 as Program 3 in the Soviet Union and moved to Channel 2 in 1967 when a new channel, Program 4 (now known as NTV), was officially launched and the Moscow Program, which started in 1956, was transferred to Channel 3. From the very start, it only hosted programs produced by the Ministry of Education of the Soviet Union, as well as children's programming, in monochrome. The move to a new channel frequency resulted in it being renamed Program 2 and becoming the second home of the national newscast Vremya since 1968.
The Arktika class is a Russian (former Soviet) class of nuclear-powered icebreakers; they are the largest and most powerful icebreakers ever constructed. Ships of the Arktika class are owned by the federal government, but were operated by the Murmansk Shipping Company (MSCO) until 2008, when they were transferred to the fully government-owned operator Atomflot. Of the ten civilian nuclear-powered vessels built by Russia (and the Soviet Union), six have been of this type. They are used for escorting merchant ships in the Arctic Ocean north of Siberia as well as for scientific and recreational expeditions to the Arctic.
History
On July 3, 1971, construction began on a conceptual design of a larger nuclear icebreaker, dubbed Arktika, in the Baltic Shipyard in then Leningrad. Four years later, on December 17, 1975, Moscow and Leningrad received radio messages informing them that sea trials had been completed successfully. The newest and largest nuclear icebreaker at the time was ready for the Arctic.

Magnitogorsk: The Soviet City Built from Scratch
In the 1930s, the Soviet government decided it wanted to build a perfect modern industrial city. Magnitogorsk would be a fully realized socialist utopia that could revolutionize the economy of the young USSR.

Ethnic Origins of the Russians
What are the ethnic origins and history of the Russian nation, which is by far the largest on Earth? The Russians seem to be that one people that's been through it all; from nearly being wiped from existence, to almost conquering the world, the Russians have a truly interesting history full of ups and downs.
In today's video, we'll be briefly going over some of this history, including various periods of rule in Russia, from the Mongols to the Soviets, and take another look at the genetics and DNA of the modern Russian people and see what distinguishes them from other Europeans or Asians. Thanks for watching!

For a few dozen Alaskan Iñupiat natives, it is possible to see Russia from their house. Just below the Arctic Circle lie two land masses between Russia and Alaska, the Diomede Islands. Small, rugged, and surrounded by ice and harsh seas, the islands are located off the Alaskan coast in the middle of the Bering Strait. Little Diomede is considered Alaskan territory, while Big Diomede, the Russian island, has remained uninhabited since the Cold War.

This series delves deep into this more than thousand-year-old cultural history in Europe’s East. For the very first time, sensational footage, shot by the world’s best cameramen, presents a bird’s-eye view of the most important and most beautiful buildings of Old Russia.
The camera explores en detail art and ornamentation, mounted on high on these splendid structures centuries ago to the glory of God, far above the line of vision of humans. Authors familiar with Russian culture find the material for their stories beneath the roofs and golden onion-shaped towers, which tell of old traditions, passions and visions. Russian and Ukrainian protagonists fill the stories, which encompass this unique culture
and architecture, time and again with their warmth, their love and a good portion of humor. They proudly present the old Russian legacy that during the World War and in the old Soviet Union days, constantly threatened to disappear.
Veliky Novgorod, also known as Novgorod the Great, or Novgorod Veliky, or just Novgorod, is one of the oldest and most important historic cities in Russia, which serves as the administrative center of Novgorod Oblast. It is situated on the M10 federal highway connecting Moscow and Saint Petersburg. The city lies along the Volkhov River just downstream from its outflow from Lake Ilmen. UNESCO recognized Novgorod as a World Heritage Site in 1992.
At its peak during the 14th century, the city was the capital of the Novgorod Republic and one of Europe's largest cities.

In the 1930s, the Soviet government decided it wanted to build a perfect modern industrial city. Magnitogorsk would be a fully realized socialist utopia that could revolutionize the economy of the young USSR.
What could possibly go wrong?

What are the ethnic origins and history of the Russian nation, which is by far the largest on Earth? The Russians seem to be that one people that's been through it all; from nearly being wiped from existence, to almost conquering the world, the Russians have a truly interesting history full of ups and downs.
In today's video, we'll be briefly going over some of this history, including various periods of rule in Russia, from the Mongols to the Soviets, and take another look at the genetics and DNA of the modern Russian people and see what distinguishes them from other Europeans or Asians. Thanks for watching!

Essequibo: Hidden River | Extra Long Documentary - https://youtu.be/v_he1IRAw-0
The exclave of the Curonian Spit forms the westernmost tip of Russia with the oldest ornithological research station in the world. In the far east on Kamchatka, Lake Kuril offers a paradise for the world's largest brown bears. High in the north on Yamal live the reindeer herds of the Nenets. Climate change and gas production are rapidly changing their icy world.
