Bahrain - Exploring old history and the new!
Bahrain has had different names over the centuries. It’s was called Tylos by the Greeks and Mishmahig by the Persians. Its fresh water and strategic location in the Arabian Gulf have brought many to its shores, and in the past it was regarded as the site of the Biblical Garden of Eden. Around 2300 years BC, Bahrain became a centre of one of the ancient empires trading between Mesopotamia (now known as Iraq) and the Indus Valley (now the region near India).
Some things have not changed. Today this island state, actually a cluster of 33 islands off the east coast of Saudi Arabia, is a major center for trade, telecommunications and finance in the Middle East.

Bahrain: The Tiny Island Playing a Big Role in the Middle East
You could say Bahrain punches above its weight: it’s a tiny island nation in the Middle East, but it plays a huge role when it comes to countering Iran, partnering with the U.S. Navy and reshaping the political landscape in the Middle East. I traveled to the capital of Manama to learn more about the small kingdom’s role on the global stage.

Bahrain was the central location of the ancient Dilmun civilization. Bahrain's strategic location in the Persian Gulf has brought rule and influence from mostly the Persians, Sumerians, Assyrians, Babylonians, Portuguese, the Arabs, and the British.
Dilmun Civilization
Bahrain was the central site of the ancient Dilmun civilization. Dilmun appears first in Sumerian cuneiform clay tablets dated to the end of fourth millennium BC, found in the temple of goddess Inanna, in the city of Uruk. The adjective Dilmun is used to describe a type of axe and one specific official; in addition there are lists of rations of wool issued to people connected with Dilmun.
Dilmun was mentioned in two letters dated to the reign of Burna-Buriash II recovered from Nippur, during the Kassite dynasty of Babylon. These letters were from a provincial official, Ilī-ippašra, in Dilmun to his friend Enlil-kidinni in Mesopotamia. The names referred to are Akkadian. These letters and other documents, hint at an administrative relationship between Dilmun and Babylon at that time. Following the collapse of the Kassite dynasty, Mesopotamian documents make no mention of Dilmun with the exception of Assyrian inscriptions dated to 1250 BC which proclaimed the Assyrian king to be king of Dilmun and Meluhha. Assyrian inscriptions recorded tribute from Dilmun. There are other Assyrian inscriptions during the first millennium BC indicating Assyrian sovereignty over Dilmun. Dilmun was also later on controlled by the Kassite dynasty in Mesopotamia.
