Bahrain Independence Day was on 16 December 1971, declaring independence from the British following a UN survey of the Bahraini population. The British announced the withdrawal of their troops east of Suez in the early 1960s.
Bahrain formally declared its independence on 15 August 1971, marked by the signing of a friendship treaty with the British that terminated previous agreements between the two sides.
Although 15 August is the actual date on which Bahrain gained its independence from the British, the state does not celebrate or mark that date. Instead, the state annually celebrates 16 December as "National Day" to coincide with the day that former ruler Isa bin Salman Al Khalifa was coronated to the throne. As such, 16 December is a national holiday and is usually celebrated with firework displays.
In 2013, the opposition have called for mass protests to coincide with the day under the title Bahrain Tamarod.
The film concerns the small-town life of an artist (Quinlan) and her challenge to become "what she's almost sure she could be." "Her desperation takes the form of affectations and pretensions that are a little like those of the young Katharine Hepburn in Alice Adams and the young Margaret Sullavan in The Shop Around the Corner, but the Quinlan character "has the talent driving her on past all that." Wiest plays a battered wife.
The film was reviewed favorably by the critic Pauline Kael in her collection State of the Art: "Kathleen Quinlan plays the part of the woman artist with a cool, wire-taut intensity, Robert Mandel keeps the whole cast interacting quietly and satisfyingly, Wiest has hold of an original character and plays her to the scary hilt."
Bahrain (i/bɑːˈreɪn/; Arabic:البحرينal-Baḥrayn), officially the Kingdom of Bahrain (Arabic:مملكة البحرينMamlakat al-Baḥrayn), is a small island country situated near the western shores of the Persian Gulf in the Middle East. It is an archipelago with Bahrain Island, the largest land mass, at 55km (34mi) long by 18km (11mi) wide. Saudi Arabia lies to the west and is connected to Bahrain by the King Fahd Causeway while Iran lies 200km (124mi) to the north across the Persian Gulf. The peninsula of Qatar is to the southeast across the Gulf of Bahrain. The population in 2010 stood at 1,234,571, including 666,172 non-nationals.
Until very recently, the whole of Eastern Arabia, from southern Iraq to the mountains of Oman, was a place where people moved around, settled and married unconcerned by national borders. The people of Eastern Arabia shared a culture based on the sea; they are seafaring peoples.
The Arab States of the Persian Gulf are solely Eastern Arabia, the borders of the Arabic-speaking Gulf do not extend beyond Eastern Arabia. The modern-day states of Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar and UAE are the archetypal Gulf Arab states.Saudi Arabia is often considered a Gulf Arab state although most Saudis do not live in Eastern Arabia.
ASB students and staff participated in a variety of National Day celebrations on December 15 to mark the 49th anniversary of independence for the Kingdom of Bahrain. A sense of national pride swept the campus with the colours of Bahrain displayed inside and outside the school and just about everyone dressed in traditional Bahraini costume.

National Anthem: Bahrain - بحريننا
Bahrainona (Arabic: بحريننا; "Our Bahrain"; also known as نشيد البحرين الوطني nashīd al-Baḥrayn al-waṭanī "the national anthem of Bahrain"), is the national anthem of Bahrain.
Two different versions were made with the same melody but with different words. The first was used from the Bahrain's independence in 1971 until 2002. The second has been in use since the constitutional amendments referendum that declared the country's ruler Hamad ibn Isa Al Khalifah as king, and the country a kingdom.
The original words were written by Mohamed Sudqi Ayyash (born 1925). The composer of the melody is unknown, but it was later re-arranged by singer and composer Ahmed AlJumairi and recorded with the London Philharmonic Orchestra, where it became the current, widely used anthem.
