The mountains in the northeast are an extension of the alpine system that runs eastward from the Balkans through southern Turkey, northern Iraq, Iran, and Afghanistan, eventually reaching the Himalayas. The desert is in the southwest and central provinces along the borders with Saudi Arabia and Jordan and geographically belongs with the Arabian Peninsula.
Iraq holds a special distinction in the history of geography: a clay tablet generally accepted as "the earliest known map" was unearthed in 1930 during the excavation of Ga-Sur at Nuzi Yorghan Tepe, near the towns of Harran and Kirkuk, 200 miles (322km) north of the site of Babylon. The tablet, measuring 6.8in ×7.6in (173mm ×193mm), is usually dated from the dynasty of Sargon of Akkad between 2500-2300 BC; an even earlier date for the tablet was promulgated by archeologist Leo Bagrow, placing it in the Agade Period (3800 BC).
The Kingdom of Iraq under British Administration or Mandatory Iraq (Arabic:الانتداب البريطاني على العراقal-Intidāb al-Brīṭānī ‘Alá al-‘Irāq) was created in 1921 following the 1920 Iraqi Revolt against the proposed British Mandate of Mesopotamia, and enacted via the 1922 Anglo-Iraqi Treaty.
Faisal ibn Husayn, who had been proclaimed King of Syria by a Syrian National Congress in Damascus in March 1920, was ejected by the French in July of the same year. Faisal was then granted by the British the territory of Iraq, to rule it as a kingdom, with the British Royal Air Force (RAF) retaining certain military control, though de facto; the territory remained under British administration until 1932.
The civil government of postwar Iraq was headed originally by the High Commissioner, Sir Percy Cox, and his deputy, ColonelArnold Wilson. British reprisals after the murder of a British officer in Najaf failed to restore order. The most striking problem facing the British was the growing anger of the nationalists, who continued to fight against the imposition of British authority. British administration had yet to be established in Iraqi Kurdistan.
The indigenous Sumerians and Akkadians (including Assyrians and Babylonians) dominated Mesopotamia from the beginning of written history (c. 3100 BC) to the fall of Babylon in 539 BC, when it was conquered by the Achaemenid Empire. It fell to Alexander the Great in 332 BC, and after his death, it became part of the Greek Seleucid Empire.

Basra, Iraq ➖ After catching the overnight train from Baghdad, we arrived in Basra at 4:30am. We hunted for a hotel to catch up on a few hours of sleep and then made our way out to explore the city. Our first stop was a trendy cafe called Nook to get some coffee and a bite to eat. We then visited a local market where we met the friendly Basra locals and went on a buying spree! A great first experience here in Southern Iraq!

Natural World: Miracle In Marshes Of Iraq
Donning his body armour, filmmaker David Johnson travels to Iraq's Mesopotamian Marshes to meet Azzam Alwash, the man at the centre of the largest habitat recreation project in the world. Considered to be original Garden of Eden, the marshes were once Iraq's wildlife jewel, where man and nature thrived for 5,000 years. In the 1990's, Saddam Hussein drained the marshes, destroying thousands of people's homes and those of millions of birds. This revealing film documents the re-birth of this unique wetland and hopes for the return of its many wildlife species.

Marshlands in southern Iraq are experiencing their worst drought in 40 years.

I can't believe my heart's still pounding I can't believe how close I came And meanwhile heaven's falling The fallen angels flown away And that'll be me someday With stolen wings and evil ways Straight south with the keys to the pearly gates Hard to believe my heart stopped pounding Hard to believe I played this game My worst nightmares became real I got so scared that I forgot my name And that'll be me someday With stolen wings and evil ways
