When Australia Had A Sea
Thank you Opera for sponsoring this video, check them out here: https://opr.as/Opera-browser-exctinctzoo
Think Australia is scary now? 100 million years ago, half the continent was covered by a shallow sea filled with some of the most nightmarish predators to ever exist. Meet the Eromanga Sea - where massive marine monsters with 43-foot-long bodies and T. rex like skulls ruled the waters. Spoiler alert: the land and sky weren't any safer.

Qatar will host it from November 20 through December 18, 2022. After the event in South Korea and Japan in 2002, this will be the second World Cup wholly held in Asia and the first World Cup ever to be contested in the Arab world. In early 2017, Qatar's total population was 2.6 million: 313,000 Qatari citizens and 2.3 million expatriates.[14] Its official religion is Islam.[15] In terms of income, the country has the fourth-highest GDP (PPP) per capita in the world,[16] and the sixth-highest GNI per capita (Atlas method).[17] Qatar is classified by the United Nations as a country of very high human development, having the third-highest HDI in the Arab world.[18] It is a high-income economy, backed by the world's third-largest natural gas reserves and oil reserves.[19] Qatar is the world's largest exporter of liquefied natural gas,[20] and the world's largest emitter of carbon dioxide per capita.[21]
Qatar has been ruled by the House of Thani since Mohammed bin Thani signed a treaty with the British in 1868 that recognised its separate status. Following Ottoman rule, Qatar became a British protectorate in the early 20th century until gaining independence in 1971. The hereditary emir of Qatar rules as an autocrat (currently, Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani) and holds all executive and legislative authority, as well as controlling the judiciary.[22] He appoints the prime minister and cabinet.[22]
In the 21st century, Qatar emerged as a significant power in the Arab world through its resource-wealth, as well as its globally expanding media group, Al Jazeera Media Network, and reportedly supporting several rebel groups financially during the Arab Spring.[23][24][25] For its size, Qatar wields disproportionate influence in the world, and has been identified as a middle power.[26][27] The 2022 FIFA World Cup will be held in Qatar, making it the first Muslim and Arab country to host the event.[28] The 2030 Asian Games will also be held in Qatar.[29]

Qatar (/ˈkæˌtɑːr/,[8] Listeni/ˈkɑːtɑːr/, /ˈkɑːtər/ or Listeni/kəˈtɑːr/;[9] Arabic: قطر Qaṭar [ˈqɑtˤɑr]; local vernacular pronunciation: [ɡɪtˤɑr]),[10][11] officially the State of Qatar (Arabic: دولة قطر Dawlat Qaṭar), is a sovereign country located in Southwest Asia, occupying the small Qatar Peninsula on the northeastern coast of the Arabian Peninsula. Its sole land border is with Saudi Arabia to the south, with the rest of its territory surrounded by the Arabian Gulf. A strait in the Arabian Gulf separates Qatar from the nearby island of Bahrain, as well as sharing sea borders with the United Arab Emirates and Iran.
Following Ottoman rule, Qatar became a British protectorate in the early 20th century until gaining independence in 1971. Qatar has been ruled by the House of Thani since the early 19th century. Sheikh Jassim bin Mohammed Al Thani was the founder of the State of Qatar. Qatar is a hereditary constitutional monarchy and its head of state is Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani.[12] The constitution was overwhelmingly approved in a constitutional referendum, with almost 98% in favour.[13][14] In 2013, Qatar's total population was 1.8 million: 278,000 Qatari citizens and 1.5 million expatriates.[15] After Saudi Arabia and Oman, Qatar is the most conservative society in the Gulf Cooperation Council.[16][17]
Qatar is a high income economy and is a developed country, backed by the world's third largest natural gas reserves and oil reserves.[18] The country has the highest per capita income in the world. Qatar is classified by the UN as a country of very high human development and is the most advanced Arab state for human development.[19] Qatar is a significant power in the Arab world, supporting several rebel groups during the Arab Spring both financially and through its globally expanding media group, Al Jazeera Media Network.[20][21][22] For its size, Qatar wields disproportionate influence in the world, and has been identified as a middle power.[23][24] Qatar will host the 2022 FIFA World Cup, becoming the first Arab country to do so
Etymology[edit]
Pliny the Elder, a Roman writer, documented the earliest account pertaining to the inhabitants of the Peninsula around the mid-first century AD, referring to them as the Catharrei, a designation which may have derived from the name of a prominent local settlement.[26][27] A century later, Ptolemy produced the first known map to depict the peninsula, referring to it as Catara.[27][28] The map also referenced a town named "Cadara" to the east of the peninsula.[29] The term 'Catara' (or, alternatively, Cataraei)[30] was exclusively used until the 18th century, after which 'Katara' emerged as the most commonly recognized spelling.[29] Eventually, the modern derivative Qatar was adopted as the country's name.[29]

The 2022 FIFA World Cup (Arabic: كَأسُ اَلعَالَمِ 2022, romanized: Kaʾsu al-ʿālami 2022; Gulf Arabic: كَاسُ اَلعَالَمِ ٢٠٢٢, romanized: Kāsu al-ʿālami 2022) is scheduled to be the 22nd running of the FIFA World Cup competition, the quadrennial international men's football championship contested by the national teams of the member associations of FIFA. It is scheduled to take place in Qatar from 21 November to 18 December 2022. This will be the first World Cup ever to be held in the Arab world,[1] and it will be the second World Cup held entirely in Asia after the 2002 tournament was held in South Korea and Japan.[a] In addition, the tournament will be the last to involve 32 teams, with an increase to 48 teams scheduled for the 2026 tournament in the United States, Mexico, and Canada. The reigning World Cup champions are France.[2] Due to Qatar's intense summer heat, this World Cup will be held from late-November to mid-December, making it the first tournament not to be held in May, June, or July; it is to be played in a reduced timeframe of around 28 days.[3]

Accusations of corruption have been made relating to how Qatar won the right to host the event. A FIFA internal investigation and report cleared Qatar of any wrongdoing, but chief investigator Michael J. Garcia has since described FIFA's report on his enquiry as containing "numerous materially incomplete and erroneous representations."[4] On 27 May 2015, Swiss federal prosecutors opened an investigation into corruption and money laundering related to the 2018 and 2022 World Cup bids.[5][6] On 6 August 2018, former FIFA president Sepp Blatter claimed that Qatar had used "black ops", suggesting that the bid committee had cheated to win the hosting rights.[7] Additionally, Qatar has faced strong criticism due to the treatment of foreign workers involved in preparation for the World Cup, with Amnesty International referring to "forced labour" and stating that hundreds or thousands of migrant workers have died as a result of human rights abuses, and careless and inhumane work conditions.[8][9]

The FIFA World Cup, a quadrennial international men's football championship played between the senior national teams of FIFA member countries, is set to take place for the 22nd time in 2022. Qatar will host it from November 20 through December 18, 2022. After the event in South Korea and Japan in 2002, this will be the second World Cup wholly held in Asia and the first World Cup ever to be contested in the Arab world. Furthermore, the tournament is planned to be the last with a 32-team field; for the tournament in the United States, Mexico, and Canada in 2026, the field is planned to grow to 48 teams.
This World Cup will be the first to not be hosted in May, June, or July and to take place in the northern autumn; it will be played in a shorter timeframe of roughly 29 days due to the extreme summer heat in Qatar. The tournament will take place from late-November to mid-December. At Al Bayt Stadium in Al Khor, the opening match will be played between Qatar and Ecuador. The final is scheduled for December 18, 2022, which also happens to be Qatar National Day. France is the current World Cup champion.

Qatar has been ruled as a hereditary monarchy by the House of Thani since Mohammed bin Thani signed a treaty with the British in 1868 that recognised its separate status. Following Ottoman rule, Qatar became a British protectorate in the early 20th century until gaining independence in 1971. The current emir is Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, who holds nearly all executive and legislative authority under the Constitution of Qatar, as well as controlling the judiciary.[14] He appoints the prime minister and cabinet. The partially-elected Consultative Assembly can block legislation and has a limited ability to dismiss ministers.
In early 2017, Qatar's total population was 2.6 million: 313,000 Qatari citizens and 2.3 million expatriates.[15] Its official religion is Islam.[16] In terms of income, the country has the fourth-highest GDP (PPP) per capita in the world,[17] and the sixth-highest GNI per capita (Atlas method).[18] Qatar has the third-highest HDI in the Arab world.[19] It is a high-income economy, backed by the world's third-largest natural gas reserves and oil reserves.[20] Qatar is the world's largest exporter of liquefied natural gas,[21] and the world's largest emitter of carbon dioxide per capita.[22]
In the 21st century, Qatar emerged as a middle power in the Arab world through its resource-wealth,[23][24] as well as its globally expanding media group, Al Jazeera Media Network, and reportedly supporting several rebel groups financially during the Arab Spring.[25][26][27] Qatar's human rights record has been regarded by academics and non-governmental organisations as being generally poor, with restrictions on civil liberties such as the freedoms of association, expression and the press, as well as its treatment of thousands of migrant workers amounting to forced labour for projects in the country.[28][29] The 2022 FIFA World Cup was awarded to Qatar under controversial circumstances, making it the first Muslim country in the Arab world to host the event.[30] Qatar hosted the 2006 Asian Games, and will also host the 2030 Asian Games.[31]

Iraq entered Qatar as reigning champions from four years earlier, only for the Socceroos - all here to announce their presence as a new Asian football powerhouse - to dash the Iraqi’s title defense hopes in the quarter-finals at the courtesy of a last-minute goal by Harry Kewell at extra time.
But days later in the final, right in front of nearly 40,000 fans at Khalifa Stadium, Japan took 109 minutes to fend the Aussies off until their game-winning extra time goal gets finally delivered thanks to an exquisite Yuto Nagatomo cross that was met by a half-volley from Tadanari Lee right to the spot. This ekes out the Samurai Blue a fourth Asian Cup title, a benchmark that remains unmatched to the present day.

The Asian Cup, which came almost five years after Doha staged the Asian Games in 2006, was being closely watched as an indicator to see how Qatar copes with hosting a major international football tournament in the country's preparations for the 2022 FIFA World Cup, the tournament of which Qatar recently won the bid just a month prior; two stadiums in Doha that hosted matches in 2011 were eventually used for the World Cup, but one of the two is demolished to give way for a newly-rebuilt and refurbished stadium.
