The two teams participate in a talent show, and the rivalry between two campers is exacerbated after a shocking event. One team puts on two strong acts, while the other team has two disasters. All seems lost until one camper unexpectedly gives a great performance, giving their team the win. To save herself from inevitably being voted off, a manipulative camper tricks some of her other teammates into voting off one of the hottest campers.
Plot[]
The episode opens in the Gopher girls' cabin with Lindsay complaining about running out of fake skin tanner. Gwen, who has just woken up, tells her she is not interested, but Lindsay is completely oblivious to her sarcasm. Chris instructs the campers over the loudspeaker to meet at the stage for the next challenge. As the campers make their way to the bleachers, Trent saves a seat for Gwen and Lindsay blows a kiss to Tyler, both of which are seen by Heather who gives them dirty looks. Chris tells the campers that the challenge of the day is a classic camp talent show, where both teams have eight hours to choose their three most talented teammates to represent them in the show.
In the Screaming Gophers, Heather declares herself team captain, which Gwen disapproves of, leading to a fight between the two. Trent inadvertently interrupts the fight with an extra muffin for Gwen, and Heather takes the opportunity to legitimize her leadership by asking Trent if he approves of her being team captain, which he does. Satisfied, Heather also announces Lindsay and Beth as judges. In the Killer Bass, Katie and Sadie are the first to audition. Courtney, who has assumed the position of team captain, and the rest of the team are unimpressed with their dance routine. For his audition, Owen drinks a whole liter of soda and burps the entire alphabet, which is praised by the guys but disgusted by the girls, with Heather in particular criticizing the act. After Trent defends him, Owen also announces that he can fart Beethoven's Fifth, which is again rejected by the girls. Gwen leaves during the commotion. Tyler tries to do yo-yo tricks for his audition, which starts well but quickly turns into him getting tangled in the string. Heather does a ballet routine and is voted in by Lindsay and Beth.
Heather gives everyone a break, then pulls Lindsay aside and asks her to keep a secret, so Lindsay talks about the time she had to save her sister Paula because she got diarrhea on a date, unwittingly revealing an embarrassing secret on television. Heather ignores her and gives her a walkie-talkie, instructing her to follow Gwen. Lindsay begins spying on her with binoculars, but quickly becomes bored with her task, and eventually notices Tyler still tied up in his yo-yo string, becomes much happier, and shifts her focus to him. DJ's ribbon dance routine is chosen for the show, though Courtney was reluctant, while Bridgette's audition of being able to hold a handstand for twenty minutes is rejected. Harold tries to audition next, but is shot down before he can even catch his breath. Geoff, with his skateboard tricks, is the second person chosen for the Bass. Off-screen, Courtney is the last person chosen for her violin playing. Meanwhile, Lindsay and Tyler make out in the bathroom.
While Courtney is practicing on the talent show stage, Bridgette bets Geoff, Harold, and all the boys on her team that she can really stand on her hands for twenty minutes. While she briefly succeeds, her leg gets tangled in a spotlight cord, causing it to fall, crushing Courtney's violin and bruising her head. Unable to perform, a nervous Bridgette must now take Courtney's place.
With the Gophers, Izzy does her rattlesnake dance, which captivates Owen and Trent. Beth twirls fire sticks, but after throwing them in the air, she fails to catch them, burning a hole in the ground and setting a bush on fire. In a dramatic display, Justin comes out and extinguishes the fire, leaving the girls in awe of his beauty. He, along with Heather and Trent (who auditioned off-screen) are chosen for the talent show. Gwen is alone writing in her diary when Cody comes over and tries to talk to her. Gwen is annoyed, and when he tries to make more small talk and sniff her hair, she leaves to go back to the cabins and go swimming. Trent offers to go with her, much to Gwen's delight. With Gwen gone, Heather tells Lindsay to guard the cabin door while she tries to find Gwen's diary. At the docks with Trent, Gwen confesses that everyone drives her crazy except him. The tender moment is ruined when Cody and Owen jump into the water, wetting Gwen and causing her to storm off, which in turn angers Trent. Heather successfully steals Gwen's diary. Before the show, Bridgette is eating chips and talking to Courtney when Heather approaches and accuses Bridgette of sabotaging her teammates. Bridgette denies the accusation and stands up for her team, and when Heather insults her further, she throws her bag of chips in her face.
Heather |
“ | What a bunch of losers. It's so easy, it's almost not fun… Almost. | ” |
The talent show begins, and Chris explains that after each performance, Chef Hatchet will score the performance on the "Chef-O-Meter," a scale of zero to nine.
- Justin, who goes first for the Gophers, does poses that ends with a torrent of water splashing over him. Chef gives the performance a six.
Owen |
“ | There are two syllables for hot: Jus and tin. Man, that guy is just so hot I could kiss him! Because he's a good teammate! Oh! Why'd I say that? | ” |
- DJ does his ribbon dance, but gets tangled up and falls, earning only two points.
- Trent plays his guitar and sings a song about Gwen, receiving an eight (five in the HD remastered version).
- Bridgette goes next, but due to a possible headache and the chips she ate earlier, she starts vomiting all over the stage and on Owen, Katie (who also vomits), Sadie, Izzy, Leshawna,. The former then slips and falls into Tyler's lap, causing a jealous Lindsay to throw a fit to Heather's fury. Chris then orders an unscheduled commercial break to clean up the mess. After the break, Bridgette earns a two for her "performance".
Bridgette |
“ | [crying] Going home won't be so bad… I— I can always work at the surf shack. | ” |
- Heather announces a change in her performance and instead decides to read a page from Gwen's diary about Trent. Completely humiliated and embarrassed, Gwen runs off, while Bridgette and Courtney are horrified by Heather's performance, and it is not judged by Chef.
- Geoff is next, but accidentally breaks his skateboard in half. With Katie and Sadie covered in vomit and Tyler and Duncan lacking any outstanding talent, Bridgette and Courtney reluctantly choose Harold as their replacement, who surprises everyone with an incredible beat-boxing performance, earning him a perfect score from Chef and winning the challenge for the Bass once again.

At the campfire ceremony, Heather gets the last marshmallow, eliminating Justin, much to Chris' surprise and the irritation of the rest of the team, who thought Heather should have gone home, as Justin sadly walks away with Heather smugly saying goodbye to him.
Gwen |
“ | If that evil little cow thinks she is getting away with this, she has another thing coming. | ” |
Later that night, Gwen gets her revenge by dumping Harold's red ant farm in her bed, causing her to run out of the cabin covered in his ants and screaming in horror. As her screams echo through the camp, a satisfied Gwen smiles and snuggles happily into her pillow.

Trivia[]
General[]
- The campers not seen auditioning for the talent show are Gwen, Duncan, Leshawna, Trent, Courtney, Cody, Justin, and Lindsay.
- However, Trent and Justin still compete in the talent show.
- The first couple of the series blossoms in this episode.
- The campers who participated in the talent show are (in order): Justin, DJ, Trent, Bridgette, Heather, and Harold.
- The order in which the Screaming Gophers happen to perform is in the order of elimination. The Killer Bass, on the other hand, perform in reverse order, as Harold is eliminated first (in "X-Treme Torture"), then Bridgette (in "Hide and Be Sneaky"), and finally DJ (in "Hook, Line, and Screamer").
- Interestingly, this order is repeated in Total Drama World Tour by Team Victory: Harold is eliminated first (in "Super Happy Crazy Fun Time Japan"), then Bridgette (in "Anything Yukon Do, I Can Do Better"), and finally DJ (in "Jamaica Me Sweat").
- Beth does the same baton stunt in the opening sequence of Total Drama Island.
- On May 30, 2020, Harold's voice actor Brian Froud recreated Harold's beatboxing performance in a video uploaded to his YouTube channel.[1]
- In retrospective, Terry McGurrin has stated that the scene of Lindsay and Tyler kissing in the Communal bathroom sink "would not be allowed" now.[2]
- This episode is referred to as "Drama 101" on the Canadian version of Cartoon Network.
Continuity[]
- This episode marks the first time one of the campers wore an outfit other than their regular outfit, swimsuit, or pajamas. In this case, DJ wore his white one-piece outfit for his ribbon twirling act and Heather wore a ballet dancer's outfit.
- This is the second time in a row that Harold surprises everyone and single-handedly wins the challenge for the Killer Bass, the first time being in the previous episode.
- This is the first of three episodes in the series where the eliminated camper does not speak at all. The others are:
- Leshawna in "Haute Camp-ture" from the same season.
- B in "Ice Ice Baby" from Total Drama: Revenge of the Island.
References[]
- The episode title is a parody of the 2000 comedy-drama film Almost Famous.
- Izzy's snake dance is a reference to the 1994 American crime film Pulp Fiction.
- The last part of Justin's performance is a reference to the dance scene in Flashdance.
- Interestingly, Gwen's voice actress, Megan Fahlenbock, previously played Jen Masterson in 6teen, who also had her diary read aloud in one episode.
Goofs[]
- When Chris introduces the show, he says that the population of "Loserville" is 4, when it is 3 (Ezekiel, Eva, and Noah).
- He could have meant that there would soon be 4.
- When the camera zooms out as Chris describes the outdoor theater, Heather's hair is not in a ponytail. However, it appears in a ponytail before and after that shot.
- By the time Owen is ready to burp the alphabet, the bottle is almost empty, and the water was going down fast, but when Trent and Gwen are talking, he can still be heard drinking in the background.
- When Tyler gets tangled in his yo-yo string, the logo on his tracksuit is missing.
- When Leshawna gives Justin a water bottle, her nose is directly under her right eye, not in the center of her face.
- When Geoff asks Bridgette if she can stand on her hands for 20 minutes, his hat is bigger than usual.
- When Heather enters the cabin to steal Gwen's diary, she enters the boys' side instead of the girls'.
- As Chris is getting ready to start the talent show, Katie's hair is missing under her ear again.
- Harold is missing when Bridgette vomits on the audience.
- Chef didn't give a rating for Heather's "performance".
- As Bridgette and Courtney debate who to send on stage next, Bridgette's hoodie pocket disappears for a moment.
- At the end of the talent show, the Gophers had a total of 14 points (Justin's 6 and Trent's 8) and the Bass had only 13 (DJ and Bridgette's 2 and Harold's 9). Nevertheless, Chris declared the Bass the winners.
- This is fixed in the Netflix version of the episode, where Trent only got 5 points instead of 8.
- When Heather insults the campers in the confessional, she appears with her normal hair, but throughout the episode she has her long ponytail.
- Heather claims she needs 4 votes plus herself to eliminate Justin, but, she would need 6 since there are 10 campers on her team.
- This could also mean that the only way for Heather to get a majority of the votes against Justin would be for there to be a split among the other five remaining votes.
