The two teams participate in a five-round game of dodgeball. Romance blooms between two campers on opposing teams, to the frustration of their teammates. Victory seems inevitable for one team, until the other team has someone takes charge to help turn the tides. Ultimately, it is an unlikely hero who wins it for his team. Meanwhile, a slacker is eliminated for giving his team nothing but attitude.
Plot[]
The episode opens with the two teams gathered in the main dining hall, where many of the campers are still showing signs of fatigue from the previous episode's Awake-A-Thon challenge. The Killer Bass are especially tired, as Harold's snoring has kept them up all night. Harold enters with a drawn mustache on his face, which he likes, followed by Gwen, who collapses onto the nearest table.

“ | We are so sucking right now! Okay, yes, Eva was a psycho, but at least she was an athletic psycho! | ” |
Meanwhile, Heather gives Beth and Lindsay an overview of the alliance rules, explaining that she can use anything that belongs to them, but her stuff is strictly off limits. Lindsay tries to object to this, but is silenced when Heather threatens to kick her out of the alliance. Heather continues to mock the Killer Bass for losing two challenges in a row, causing Courtney to throw some oatmeal at her, but she dodges, and it hits Gwen in the face instead. Chris tells the campers that the next challenge will start in ten minutes.
The two teams gather on a court with clear, glass walls. Duncan, still exhausted from the last challenge, collapses on one of the bleachers and threatens dire consequences if his team wakes him up. Courtney blames Harold's snoring for Duncan's bad mood, but he loudly proclaims it as a medical condition. Chris explains that the teams will be playing the classic game of dodgeball and explains the rules, with Chef Hatchet as the referee. The Screaming Gophers have to sit out one person per game along with Gwen, and Noah, unimpressed with the challenge and not wanting to participate in it, immediately volunteers. Before the first round starts, Heather continues to trade insults with the other team. As the round begins, and Cody throws a dodgeball at Tyler, who dodges it. Overconfident in his abilities, he tries to throw a ball back, but accidentally hits Sadie on his team's bench, and soon after, Owen knocks Tyler out of the game.
Harold tries to use his martial arts skills to throw his dodgeball, but with no muscle power behind his throw, it doesn't reach Leshawna, his intended target. Leshawna easily throws the same ball back at Harold, kicking him out. Katie knocks Lindsay out of the round, and Tyler flirts with Lindsay, which Heather sees and angrily throws a dodgeball at him, hitting him in the groin and making him yell "Mommy". Courtney scolds Heather for doing this, noting that Tyler is already out, and retaliates by throwing a dodgeball in her direction, but it's caught by Owen, eliminating Courtney. Late in the round, after eliminating Leshawna, DJ and Katie corner Cody, the only Gopher standing. However, Cody proves to be an expert dodgeball player, making the ball work like a boomerang to take out DJ by surprise, then by rubbing the dodgeball on his shirt to create static electricity, guiding the ball to hit Katie. The Screaming Gophers win the first game in a best of three out of five.
Courtney doesn't think Harold and Tyler are worth having on the court. Tyler, however, convinces her and the rest of his team that he con do well if they give him all the balls. The rest of the team agrees to the terms and gives him hold all the balls. However, Tyler doesn't do any better than before, and all the balls he throws fly out of control, almost hitting Chef, Chris, and the Gophers who are on the bench. The last one finally hits a Gopher player, but it is Lindsay. Tyler screams and rushes to help her, but Lindsay's face is covered in bruises from the dodgeballs he threw. Still, Tyler assures her that she doesn't look bad. Trent gently throws a ball at Tyler to eliminate him from the game, and although it is against the alliance rules, Lindsay agrees to go for a walk with him. They both leave the court together. Suddenly, Owen, overcome by a sudden rage, takes the dodgeballs out of his teammates' hands and knocks out every single Bass player by himself, giving his team their second win.
Heather points out to the Bass that the score is now 2-0, and if they lose the next game, they will lose the challenge and end up in yet another Campfire Ceremony. Courtney, determined not to let that happen, looks to Duncan to help the team. Although the team is afraid of his reaction when he wakes up, they wake him up anyway, and inform him of their situation. Duncan questions why he should help, and Courtney points out that he would undoubtedly be the next to be eliminated if their team loses the challenge. Duncan agrees, but only on the condition that everyone follows his orders.
Duncan implements his "Rush the New Guy" strategy, where everyone throws their ball at the same person, making it almost impossible for that person to escape. The Screaming Gophers are surprised when Owen, their strongest player, is taken down by this strategy. With Owen eliminated, the rest of the Gophers are easily defeated, giving the Killer Bass their first victory. Noah, who refused to participate in this challenge at all, criticizes his team and tells them to try harder. Heather becomes furious, unwilling to let the Killer Bass successfully strike back the next time.
Then, Heather notices that Lindsay is still missing, goes off to find her, and sees her cuddling with Tyler under the boat dock. Furious at Lindsay for breaking alliance rules, Heather throws a canoe at Tyler and then drags Lindsay back to the court. When Heather returns, she sees that her team is getting slaughtered again by Duncan's strategy. Courtney doesn't approve of Tyler's relationship with Lindsay either, worrying that she might make him reveal all of their weaknesses. Nevertheless, the Killer Bass win, tying the score, and the next round will determine the winner of the challenge.
For the final game, Harold, tired of sitting out, begs to play, but Courtney adamantly refuses. The round goes on for a while, with numerous players rotating in and out of the game, all except for Noah, whose only contribution is giving sarcastic, lackluster cheering for his team. In fitting karma, he's hit by an errant dodgeball, prompting Heather to echo his earlier comment that "sports aren't his forte". Eventually, Geoff, feeling sorry for Harold, allows him to take his place in the game, though Duncan instructs Harold to stay at the back of the court. At one point, Gwen nails Courtney in the face with a dodgeball, as revenge for the oatmeal earlier in the day. The Gophers and the Bass take each other out until it comes down to the last two players, Owen and Harold. Thinking this will be an easy win, the Gophers begin to cheer. Owen throws four dodgeballs at Harold, but Harold dodges them all, showing his expert reflexes. Astonished, Courtney calls for a timeout, and as they tend to him, Harold explains that he has taken figure skating lessons, hence his reflexes. Geoff compliments his talent, but reminds him that dodging isn't enough to win the game. Courtney agrees, telling him that since he can't throw the ball, the best thing he can do is catch it.
The game continues, and Owen uses all of his strength to throw a single dodgeball at Harold. The force behind Owen's throw is strong enough to push Harold into the glass wall, but as he slides down to the floor, he reveals that he successfully caught the ball. The Killer Bass win the round, and the challenge, leaving a shocked Owen to whimper in defeat. The Bass carry off Harold in celebration of their first victory, while Chris comes up and questions the Gophers about how they could lose with such a big lead over the opposing team and after two consecutive wins. Noah blames the loss on a poor effort by his teammates, which only angers the other Gophers more. Gwen blasts Noah and leaves, to which Heather surprisingly agrees before leaving with the girls and Cody angrily, leaving Noah with an annoyed Justin, Trent and Owen.

“ | I guess I'm kind of a role model now that I won the Dodgeball competition. People will probably all want my autograph when the show is over and stuff. | ” |
At the Campfire Ceremony, Chris hands out marshmallows to everyone except Lindsay and Noah, with the last marshmallow going to Lindsay. Upon realizing that he has been voted out, the initially confidant Noah looks shocked and tells his team that they have voted out the only person who has any brains. They respond by throwing all of their marshmallows at him, with an added insult from Leshawna about showing some respect. Unimpressed, Noah leaves the island. Chris acknowledges the less than dramatic bonfire ceremony, but brushes it off anyways.

Trivia[]
General[]
- Heather is the only camper not shown to be hit by a dodgeball.
- Katie is the only player shown on screen playing dodgeball in all five games.
- This is one of two episodes of the series referenced on the game show Jeopardy!, along with "Brunch of Disgustingness", during that game.
- The scene where Cody jumps in front of Gwen to save her from a dodgeball that hits him in the groin is similar to later in the series when Sierra protects Cody in "Sweden Sour" (Total Drama World Tour) and later when Duncan protects Gwen in "Saving Private Leechball" (Total Drama All-Stars).
Continuity[]
- Noah becomes the second person to never earn a marshmallow, Ezekiel being the first.
- This episode marks the first time the Screaming Gophers lose a challenge and the first time the Killer Bass win a challenge.
- Owen and Gwen are the first two members of the Screaming Gophers to earn a marshmallow. They also happen to be the last two on Total Drama Island.
- They are also the last two campers left on the Screaming Gophers in the final round.
- In the second round of the dodgeball game, Lindsay, Beth, Owen, Trent, and Izzy compete for the Screaming Gophers. These five, along with Justin, will later be on the same team in Total Drama Action.
- Coincidentally, the members playing for the Killer Bass in that round did not compete in the second season (Katie, Sadie, Tyler) or were eliminated before teams were formed (Bridgette, Geoff).
References[]
- The title of the episode is a pun on dodgeball, fitting the challenge of the episode.
- The way Harold dodges Owen's balls in the fifth round is a reference to the movie The Matrix.
- Chris says, "The first rule of dodgeball is…" to which Noah replies, "Do not talk about dodgeball?" This is a reference to the famous Fight Club quote.
- The way some red and white stars flew around on a black screen while "POW!" sound effects played, after Owen was hit by four dodgeballs in a row, is a parody of the Tom and Jerry hit effect.
- Owen mentions The Great Gatsby, written by F. Scott Fitzgerald, in the second round.
- DJ and Gwen both throwing the balls and hitting each other at the same time could be a reference to a scene in Kill Bill.
- Heather calls Gwen a Sleeping Beauty.
Goofs[]
- The bleachers change direction several times.
- When Geoff lets Harold play in the last round, just as he hands him the ball, there is another ball right on top of Sadie's head. There is no explanation for it being there, even the possibility that it might be the ball that Heather threw at Tyler's groin earlier.
- Most of the time, when people are cheering, Heather can be heard saying "We won!" even when no one is winning or only the Bass have something to cheer about.
- There is even a moment when the shot cuts to a scowling Heather while her voice is still cheering.
- When Harold tries to hit Leshawna with a ball, Courtney's hair is longer and angled down.
- Harold's sideburn disappears as he slides into the wall of the court.
- When the Killer Bass decide that they need to wake Duncan up, Courtney tells Harold that he is the worst at dodgeball aside from Trent. Since Trent was on the other team, Courtney should have said that Tyler was the worst, not Trent. This error is corrected in later re-releases of the episode. In the Netflix version, Courtney still says Trent's name, although the subtitles correctly say Tyler.
- At the beginning of the campfire ceremony, Heather has her hair in a ponytail. However, when she goes to get her marshmallow, her ponytail is gone.
- During the Campfire Ceremony, Noah is initially seated to Justin's left. However, when Justin is called to get his marshmallow, the seat to his left is empty, even though Noah has not been called.
- As Noah leans forward while ranting about being voted off, the color of his vest goes past the outline and over his shirt.
- When Owen and Harold are facing each other, the close-up of Owen shows three balls beside him and one in his hand. But when the close-up of the entire court is shown, he has four on the floor and one in his hand.
- Lindsay gets hit in the face with dodgeballs and her face becomes lumpy and swollen. However, just before Tyler throws his last ball, her face is perfectly normal. But when the ball hits her, it's swollen again.
- Just before the Screaming Gophers' bonfire ceremony, when the Killer Bass congratulate Harold for winning the challenge for them, Bridgette wasn't seen.
- If you look closely when the Gophers are all walking away from Noah after the game, Leshawna can be seen walking on air for a moment before leaving the bleachers.
- At two points in the episode, the hair under Katie's ear disappears.
- When the Gophers walk off from the bleachers at the end of the episode, the lines on Lindsay's skirt are vertical instead of horizontal.
- When Gwen is hit by the oatmeal at breakfast, her bangs are missing.
- When Katie and DJ stare at Cody, Katie's eyebrows are missing.
- After the Killer Bass huddle, Tyler is seen with four dodgeballs and the Screaming Gophers are seen with three, even though they started with only six.
- Several of Duncan's piercings disappear several times throughout the episode.
- The symbol on Tyler's jacket flips several times throughout the episode.
- Noah's undershirt behind his collar disappears several times throughout the episode.
- During and after the scene where Harold arrives with his mustache, Leshawna and Izzy are missing from the Gopher's table.
- On Netflix, the episode is called DodgeBrawl with a capital "B."
- Chris tells the Screaming Gophers that they have to sit out one person each round, even though they are actually two campers ahead of the Killer Bass. Also, there are only five players in each round, so Chris' instructions are useless.
- When the Killer Bass celebrates after knocking out Owen, you can see DJ and Geoff floating backwards in the last few frames.
- Izzy is seen with the wrong number of bracelets several times throughout the episode, ranging from two bracelets on each arm (when she and the rest of the Gophers are shocked by Harold's dodging skills) to none at all (when she is declared safe during the elimination ceremony).
- Cody is shown with two pieces in the top of his hair as the Bass carry Harold out.
- In the first shot of the contestants standing on the dodgeball court as Duncan enters, Sadie is wearing her swimsuit.
- In the first round, Leshawna is seen using what appears to be a ball thrown by DJ. Normally, this would result in the thrower being called out. However, both DJ and Katie are allowed to remain on the court.
