"Quarantine: Part Two"[1] is the eleventh episode of Season 2 of The Good Doctor. It is the twenty-ninth episode overall, and aired on January 14, 2019.

Synopsis[]

The hospital is still in quarantine as Dr. Shaun Murphy continues to be overwhelmed by the chaos and noise in the emergency room; Dr. Morgan Reznick struggles to keep her patients alive, and Dr. Audrey Lim fights for her life. Meanwhile, Dr. Neil Melendez and Dr. Claire Browne must find a way to complete their patient's bone marrow transplant, despite the quarantine.[2]

Summary[]

Shaun is still curled up in the fetal position he ended up in. He visualizes taking the bus as he lays on the floor with several patients and hospital staff screaming around him; Nurse Villanueva realizes something's wrong with him, while Park shouts for Kellan who is having an asthma attack but his inhaler empty. Morgan tells Villanueva not to yell at Shaun as it will only make it worse, suggesting she tell him all the details about the surgery. This quickly calms him down as Shaun returns to their makeshift OR.

Neil and Claire are able to revive Chris, but Claire is worried they will lose their medical licenses for dismissing his rights. Neil says she won't be held accountable as she was following her attending's orders. Park is able to get into the ER to be by his son's side, ensuring his son that this is only his asthma. When patients demand more doctors, he orders everyone to shut up and realizes there is no time for him to wait for pharmacy to deliver a nebulizer for his son. Instead, Park creates one for him, though Kellen is upset that he saw his father threaten to use the taser gun on the security guard.

Andrews talks to Morgan about treatment protocol. Though she knows it didn't help the other two plane patients and Tyler, she's hoping they got to Dr. Lim in time. He voices his concern about Shaun's breakdown but gets angrier when he finds out Park is also in the quarantine area. Concurrently, Dr. Glassman walks out and finds Lea still waiting. He knows he isn't wrong about his cancer coming back, even though the tests will be forwarded to Dr. Blaize. He tells that he probably has a year or 14 months left and they aren't saying anything to Shaun.

Neil meets Andrews who doesn't agree with his plan to expand the quarantine area, but Neil is determined. Andrews suggests using the janitor's closets and the linen room as both have negative pressure in them, which seems viable to both of them. Meanwhile, Shaun, wearing plugs in his ears to mitigate the overwhelming noise, is able to give an update on patients. Alex realizes the buzzing light is preventing Shaun from concentrating and smashes it, and Shaun is able to refocus. He reveals that Viola's water broke, and they see her standing there holding her belly. She is having full contractions as Shaun says she is 36 weeks pregnant, while she is worried about whether he is going to freak out again. Shaun talks statistics with her as Kellan wants to know if he talks like that; Shaun says it is good to be honest.

Kellan wishes his father was like that but Shaun defends Park, saying he is very honest with his opinions. Viola questions on whether Park tells Kellan that he loves him as he admits his father isn't really there for them. Shaun says he risked his life and career for him, but Viola understands. At the same time, Morgan is startled when Lim apologizes for her loss and then tells her how to keep an eye on her. She also says she loves this place and always said she would be doing this until the day she died; Morgan tries to reassure her that they got it in time. When Lim tells her to put Tyler's corpse out of sight as it's not a healthy reminder for either of them, Morgan realizes there is a tear in his mask and the virus might not be airborne after all.

Kellan tries to talk to Park, only to walk away because it isn't urgent. Park tries to talk to him, stating that he moved away for the job as Kellan says he only came to one game of the entire baseball season and barely watched it, wondering why he even bothered coming. An older woman who is one of the patients tends to Santa Pete when Park arrives, saying he is going to extract bone marrow and asks who can help him. The elderly female patient says she was a veterinarian and he accepts. Viola's monitors are beeping, causing Shaun to believe she could have preeclampsia and about to have a seizure.

Viola doesn't want to deliver the baby in quarantine but Nurse Petringa says the baby isn't getting enough oxygen and they need to get him out, while Shaun announces this is going to be his first baby and hers. Morgan rushes to be by Lim's side and begins intubation, her lungs filling with fluid and secretion. Andrews tells her to put Lim on bypass as Morgan suggests doing ECMO and is sure Andrews can walk her though it. Meanwhile, Shaun knows Viola is dilated, but says her screaming is very loud. Shaun announces they cannot deliver the baby because they need to turn it. Nurse Petringa says they can't do a c-section, so they instead grab gel for them to rotate the baby internally. Lea sits with Glassman, wanting to know when they are going to tell Shaun. However, Glassman says telling him in the first place was a mistake and Glassman is Shaun's mentor so it isn't Shaun's job to take care of him.

Neil walks Alex through the bone marrow extraction on Bob Cravens, who feels like he deserves some pain as he wasn't around for his son, even when his ex was dying. While Esther tells him at least he is there now, Claire says Chris Santos is in hypotensive crisis and tells Park to go as fast as he can with the withdrawal. At the same time, Shaun and Nurse Petringa work on rotating the baby when they realize Viola's placenta has erupted and her baby's heart rate is dropping as she bleeds out. Shaun calls for supplies and an OBGYN to supervise his first solo surgery. Morgan begins the procedure on Lim as Shaun brings Viola over the the door where Dr. Garcia is there to supervise the c-section from the other side of the glass door as he starts. Meanwhile, Claire and Neil start work on Chris.

Viola's pressure is dropping, as both Petringa and Dr. Garcia begin to talk to him at once. Shaun becomes overwhelmed, telling everyone to be quiet as he needs to concentrate. He is able to see the baby's head, but when he removes the baby, he isn't breathing. Shaun begins to work on the baby, but Viola is bleeding out as Shaun works on the baby instead of Viola. Concurrently, Lea continues to talk to Glassman feeling Shaun deserves to know. However, Glassman still thinks that Shaun can't know and thinks Lea is toying with Shaun, considering the road trip she took him on, then kissed him goodbye, suddenly reappeared in his life and moved in with him and thinks she will hurt him again. While Lea barely responds since she knows Glassman is dying, Dr. Blaize calls him in.

Park covers the marrow in bubble wrap and sends it down the laundry shoot, Bob suddenly complains about chest pain and goes into cardiac arrest after the tip broke off his IV and it is supposedly in his heart. Petringa and Dr. Garcia tell Shaun to immediately stop working on the baby and save the mother, but he feels they both can be saved, asking for surgical equipment. He retrieves Kellan to perform CPR on the newborn baby while Shaun also works on placing a balloon into Viola to stop the bleeding. Park needs to crack open Bob's chest, right in the janitor's closet, while Chris receives the bone marrow with his vitals looking good.

Glassman returns to Lea, apologizing for what he said before. It turns out that the cancer isn't back which Lea thinks is it great, but Glassman says he has meningitis and basically needs surgery immediately while still refusing to tell Shaun. Lea calls him out over this and states that Shaun is not a child who needs constant protection, but a smart caring adult which Glassman could use right now. At the same time, Shaun worries that the balloon isn't working, but he continues and Viola's vitals go back up. Shaun checks on the baby, realizing his lungs are filled with fluid and needs more medical equipment right away. Neil calls Morgan, who learns how grave Lim's condition is. Morgan lets him see her, praising her for taking care of her. Shaun explains to the mother that the baby has fecal matter in his lungs, though he would've suffocated had it not been for Kellan.

Lea sits with Viola's husband Clifton, as she comforts him telling him that this is how it used to be and reminds him that his grandfather didn't love his father any less by sitting in the waiting room. Glassman orders them to be quiet as they suddenly hear a newborn baby cry as he congratulates Clifton. Everyone claps as Shaun holds the baby before he hands him to Viola, revealing her son is okay. Morgan also runs off as Lim's monitors beeps and finds Lim asking her for some water and states that ECMO was a ballsy move, which they are both pleased with. While Shaun clears most of his patients, Ester wants to check on someone upstairs anyway.

Claire and Melendez tell Chris it looks like remission is a real possibility; he wants to thank his father too but learns about the complications he had during extraction and he died. Esther comes to see Chris, saying she was with his father when he mentioned he has a lot of regrets but it meant a lot that he could help him (leaving Chris in tears). Meanwhile, Park finds Kellan, revealing he didn't fight harder for him and his mother because Park wasn't a good enough person and father. He talks about his father reminding him to always be like stone and never cry. It makes him stronger, which isn't always a good thing because he spent a life living behind a wall. He reveals that when he split up from Kellan's mother it made him feel like a failure and moving away helped him hide from that. He continues to fight his father's voice, trying to silence it, and tells Kellan he loves him and always will, leading to Kellan embracing him.

The hospital is finally open again and Morgan walks out, taking a breath of fresh air and seeing the bodies of the deceased be taken away by the CDC. The board leaves, including Andrews after a long night. Park's ex-wife Mia is there to greet Kellan, Alex proudly sharing how amazing Kellan was helping with the delivery. Alex is happy to see Mia, but he reveals he lost a patient and allows Mia to embrace him, with all three walking out together. Neil comes to see Lim, wishing her a "Merry Christmas"; both admitting they will never forget this one. He says the idea of her not being around wasn't okay with him, to which Lim says her bourbon days are behind her for a little while, but he says he'll wait.

Lea and Glassman catch up to Shaun, who is hungry and tired. Lea suggests they get breakfast which pleases Shaun but he wants to know how Glassman's appointment went. Glassman tells the truth, and surgery is scheduled for later that day. Shaun says that's good; meningitis isn't as bad as cancer and now that they know that its meningitis that is causing memory loss, he will be able to get his license back. Lea checks first, and Shaun agrees for "Glassy" to hug him which they do and Glassman tells him he is proud of him.
