Dr. Garcia is the Director of Obstetrics and Gynecology at San Jose St. Bonaventure Hospital.

History[]

Season 2[]

In "Quarantine: Part Two," after pregnant Viola begins bleeding, Dr. Shaun Murphy calls for an OB/GYN to supervise him as Shaun performs a C-section on Viola as his first solo surgery. After Shaun sees Dr. Garcia outside of the ER, he is pleased and tells Viola that as the head OB/GYN at the hospital, Garcia is likely far more qualified than Viola's regular OB/GYN. Garcia talks Shaun, assisted by Nurse Deena Petringa, through the surgery. After he gets overwhelmed by everyone talking to him at once, Shaun orders Deena, Viola and Garcia to shut up so that he can concentrate.

After Shaun successfully delivers the baby, he is discovered to not be breathing and Viola's hemorrhaging causes her to begin crashing as Shaun tries to save the baby. Garcia orders Shaun to focus on saving the mother as per medical protocol, but Shaun instead seeks help from the patients in the waiting room. Kellan Park, who knows CPR from health class, volunteers to help and Garcia instructs him on performing CPR on an infant before guiding Shaun through his efforts to stabilize Viola while telling Kellan to keep performing CPR even though he can't tell if it's working. After Viola is stabilized, Shaun determines that the baby has aspirated fecal matter into his lungs and Garcia instructs Shaun in what to do next. Kellan becomes distressed that he may have done something wrong, but Garcia reassures the young man that he likely dislodged some of the fecal matter with his efforts, preventing the baby from suffocating. Shaun is able to clear the baby's airway and Garcia joins in the celebration over the birth of the baby, declared by Deena to be a Christmas miracle.
