“I sense a kindred spirit in the Etherian Dark Mages. A pity they are our enemies, I would have liked to learn from them.
The Dark Mage is a mini-boss that spawns in the Old One's Army event during wave 5 in Tier 1 and during waves 4 and 6 in Tier 3. It will freely float a bit above the ground. It randomly chooses between three attacks:
- The Dark Mage summons Dark Energy, and hurls it directly at the player, dealing 80 / 160 / 240 damage.
- The Dark Mage summons a large rune, which then generates a large area of light that heals most enemies in its 62.5-tile range (who have at least 30 maximum health, who deal at least 1 damage, and who are not a Dark Mage) by up to 500 health.[3]
- The Dark Mage begins chanting, and a Dark Sigil will appear. After a short moment, Old One's Skeletons will appear from them. This attack cannot be done if there are more than 200 NPCs in the world.
Notes[]
- The Dark Mage will continue to respawn until Wave 5 reaches 99% in Tier 1. This allows it to be farmed by players with late pre-Hardmode and higher gear.
- Like other members of the Old One's Army, the Dark Mage is immune to Teleporters and Lava, and will take half damage from Traps except Explosive Traps.
- The Dark Mage is restricted to hovering a bit above the ground. It cannot fly upwards, though the skeletons it summons can.
- Two pet eggs, the Gato Egg and Dragon Egg drop from this mini-boss; however, the Creeper Egg light pet drops from Ogre.
- The Dark Mage always spawns from the left portal, this could be useful for creating an arena.
Trivia[]
- The pet drops from the Dark Mage in T1 are one of the highest drop chances for any pet items from enemies, beaten out only by the Bone Key from the Dungeon Guardian.
- On the PC version, Console version, Mobile version, and tModLoader version, the War Table, War Table Banner, Dragon Egg, and Gato Egg are not affected by Luck, unlike most uncommon loot drops. Thus, they will always drop at their listed drop rates.[2]
- The Dark Mage can't heal itself, other Dark Mages, or the Moon Lord.
- If a boss reaches the second phase and then is fully healed by the Dark Mage, the boss will still maintain its current phase (with an exception like Santa-NK1, Plantera, and Queen Slime as it will convert into the first form after fully healed).
- Despite being a miniboss in terraria, The dark mage is just an enemy in Dungeon defenders 2.
The Bestiary entry for the Dark Mage: "A small, levitating sorcerer from Etheria who wields dark magic and can even raise fresh minions for the Old One's Army."
