The Making of F-Zero - The story of the classic F-Zero

F-ZERO 99 is a game for Nintendo Switch Online members. It is a competitive version of F-ZERO, similar to other battle royale games on the service. It is the first game in the F-ZERO franchise since 2004.

Gameplay[]

The game is a battle royale twist to the series with the player competing with 98 other racers. The player picks one of the four machines from the original F-Zero. While the game presents itself like the original game, the mechanics are more inspired by later entries. The player accelerates with the B button, brakes with the Y button, and steers with the control stick or d-pad. The L and R buttons allow the player to Slide in their respective direction and the ZL and ZR button allows them to perform a Spin Attack. After the first lap, the player can perform a Boost by pressing A and sacrificing a chunk of their power meter. If a player collides with another racer or the guard rail, they will also sap their power meter though Spin Attacks with reduce that damage. When the power runs out, the player will lose control and then crash out. When the machine is destroyed, it counts as a loss no matter how high the racer performed in an earlier course. The power meter can be restored in the Pit Area at the start of each lap.

The unique mechanics of this game is the Super Boost mechanic. After bumping into competitors or the Gold Bumpers, sparks will fly out that will fill up a second power meter. It can be activated the same way as a boost once the meter is full and take the player up to the Skyway, a speedier route above the course with nondamaging rails. When the meter fully depletes, the player is brought back down to the regular course. The battle royale aspect also comes to play in each lap, which will increase the Safe rank, ranking out all racers that fall below that rank. While the rank includes crashed out players in the ranks, the Safe rank will increase further in grand prix races. Playing aggressively is reward with a larger power meter and any KOs will restore the Power Meter to full. Players knocked out early can be given the opportunity to play as the lucky bumper and attack the other racers.
