Pac-Man 99(JP) was a competitive multiplayer game for the Nintendo Switch. The play competes by playing a game of Pac-Man against a group of players similar to Tetris 99. The game is free to play for Nintendo Switch Online subscribers with the option to pay for DLC to get offline modes and skins to change the look of the game. The servers were shut down on October 8, 2023. The game was also delisted from the eShop that same day.
Gameplay[]
The basic gameplay is the same as traditional Pac-Man with the goal of eating all the pellets in a level without getting touched by one of the ghosts. The player will lose if they touch a ghost without a power pellet and the last player standing will win the match.
Players can boost the abilities of their Pac-Man by using the left stick. Each of the direction corresponds to a small power-up except for left which is just standard. The power-ups are Stronger, Speed and Train.
Players can interfere with each other by eating the ghosts. This will send Jammer Pac-Man to opposing players, with a targeting system similar to Tetris 99. When a Jammer Pac-Man touches the player, they will have their movement speed reduced. Players can increase the number of ghosts eaten by activating sleeping ghosts, which appear randomly in the maze. When a Power Pellet is activated, any active sleeping ghosts will turn scared and act the same as the regular ghosts when eaten, sending numerous Jammer Pac-Man to the other players.
DLC[]
There are two major components to the DLC, the modes and the skins. The Unlock Pack gives players access to the offline modes as well as options for private matches. The Skins can be purchased individually or as a part of the Deluxe Pack.
The first offline mode is CPU Battle which basically is the Battle Royale mode but, with 98 computer players instead of other players online. The second mode is a Score Attack mode which is similar to a traditional Pac-Man game, though with some of the rules of this version. The third is Blind Time Attack where the player has to complete the maze as fast as possible.
The DLC was also delisted. All paid custom themes were delisted on August 8, 2023, and the Mode Unlock/Deluxe Pack DLC was delisted on September 8, 2023.
