The Mountains of the Wind, according the Ambarkanta, were an ancient mountain range located in the eastern portion of the Mid-land of Middle-earth. The name was coined in reference to the strong winds that blew there from the east. During the Years of the Trees, before the War of the Powers, the land of Hildórien laid between the Eastern Sea and the Mountains of the Wind.[1]
History[]
After the destruction of the Two Lamps by Melkor, the simmetry of Arda was disrupted. The land of Aman and the land of the Sun were torned apart from Middle-earth and the Western Sea and the Eastern Sea appeared in between, the Isle of Almaren and the Great Lake where it layed were destroyed and where the Lamps fall the ice was melt and great mountain ranges were raised. Where Ormal fell the melted ice formed the inner Sea of Ringil, to the east of which rose the Yellow Mountains, while to the west rose the Grey Mountains. Where Illuin fell the melted ice formed the inner Sea of Helcar, to the east of wich rose the Red Mountains, while to the west rose the Blue Mountains. According the Ambarkanta, in this same period of the early Years of the Trees the Mountains of the Wind existed in the eastern center portion of Middle-earth. Unlike other mountain ranges, in the maps of Arda after the War of Powers the Mountains of the Winds are nomore shown, so their destiny is unclear.
