This article is about the mountains in Beleriand. For the plateau in Mordor, see Plateau of Gorgoroth. |
The Ered Gorgoroth, or Mountains of Terror, was a mountain range in the north of Beleriand.
They were the southern edge of the highlands of Dorthonion, separating Dorthonion and the north-lands of Ard-galen from Beleriand proper.[1]
History[]
The Ered Gorgoroth was named by the Sindarian Elves of Doriath after the terrible being Ungoliant made it her temporary home. South of the Ered Gorgoroth lay Nan Dungortheb, infested by Giant Spiders that Ungoliant used to breed her monstrous offspring. Among them was her infamous daughter Shelob.
The Ered Gorgoroth had no known passes, and even the Orcs of Morgoth passed it by. In all of the First Age, only Beren son of Barahir is said to have passed the mountain range, and he never told others of it afterward.
Like the rest of Beleriand, the Ered Gorgoroth was drowned at the end of the War of Wrath, though part of Dorthonion survived, as the isle of Tol Fuin.[1]
Etymology[]
Ered Gorgoroth was Sindarin for 'mountains of terror'.[2]
