]]>“No one has ever loved me that much.”
Richard Linklater's BLUE MOON is the claustrophobic character study of an unhappy, delusional, self-aware artist - a man who spends the entire night reminding everyone around him just how much he matters while failing to realize that he is but an extra in everyone else’s story.
]]>"When a film has the power to elicit such an intense, raw and even therapeutic response, that has to be acknowledged, and it becomes so much more important than any storytelling flaws."
The Thing with Feathers is a flawed film both narratively and tonally, and yet I can’t stop thinking about it.

]]>“At some point in the film, Rosenkrantz explains that the reason why she wanted to do this project in the first place was that she felt like she didn’t do anything with her days, and she wanted to discover how her artist friends filled their time. It’s in this line that lies the essence of the film itself, where we soon become painfully aware of how uneventful and lonely Hujar’s life is too, and how desperately both characters need to be seen and heard by each other, and to find that their lives matter.”
]]>“ On one hand, it features fantastic performances from the entire cast and a couple of superbly shot and choreographed scenes that, alone, are worth the entire film.
On the other hand, it’s a complete mess of themes and tones from start to end, whose plot developments range from stylistically awkward to nearly incomprehensible, with a politically charged final twist that feels lazy at best, and manipulative at worst.“

]]>It was love at first sight with MAD BILLS TO PAY, which kind of feels to me like Andrea Arnold and Sean Baker's love child but also has a very strong identity of its own. ❤️

]]>“If the film works as well as it does, it’s in no small part thanks to Juli Grabenhenrich and Luca Marinelli. […] The character of Paolo, and Marinelli’s skills in bringing him to life, also gives us an interesting analysis of masculinity, in a way that feels particularly authentic to Italian relationships. As he tries to take responsibility of his past and have a conversation with his daughter, Paolo does anything from lying to avoid confrontation to keeping everything inside until all his emotions emerge like a flood, and even resorting to violence when fear takes over. In an especially moving scene, he’s only able to express himself when there’s a literal wall separating him from his daughter. As an Italian myself, I recognized so many of the patriarchal dynamics depicted in Paternal Leave, both in Paolo as a character and in the film’s approach to fatherhood and family.”

]]>“The journey itself definitely has highs and lows […]. Still, there is a lot to like in Tales From the Magic Garden (Pohadky Po Babicce), a gorgeous stop-motion animated tale that’s both an ode to the resilience of children and a reminder that we’re never not going need to feel safe and looked after.”
]]>I really wanted to love Dag Johan Haugerud's DRØMMER but I found it a little underwhelming and unfocused. Still, this is an empathetic look at the loneliness of adolescence and the experiences that shape us, led by a fantastic performance from Ella Øverbye.
