this kind of tore me up and ate me alive. raw and unflinching character studies on unlikable (or: realistic) women are always such a rare and welcome sub-genre but it’s like shooting in the dark to also portray motherhood specifically in such an unapologetically ugly light. good grief
Bad people are complicated. There is something dark at the centre of The Lost Daughter, a film which viciously tears apart the idealism we often have about motherhood. It is a film of mothers, but not one of love. Instead we see a rot, mothers who find children a burden. The Lost Daughter is an uncomfortable movie, with a constant unease and sense of dread. We wait to be given answers, for characters to be uncovered and exposed, and yet they aren't. This is a film which asks us to look inside ourselves and see if we can understand why the characters do what they do. Different people will feel differently about the film. Some will relate to it more…
Was distracted most of the time because I couldn’t stop thinking about Dakota Johnson’s eyeliner
only the third best film that's set on a greek island and is about motherhood (the first and second are mamma mia and mamma mia: here we go again)
if i found out my mum told paul mescal i had no boobs i would never speak to her again
i shall only be peeling my oranges like a snake from now on just as olivia colman and jessie buckley have raised me to do
my favourite part about this was how she made so many enemies on vacation... i need to try this
